Hi. I'm/we are off to Fort William area on the 12th of February for 5 days. I'll have my 3 year son and his Mum with me and the plan is to rent a log cabin. They both like a lay in so it gives me a chance to get out early for sunrise.

Can anyone recommend anywhere nearby? Will probably be able to get out for some sunsets aswell. All weather dependent of course.

Also i am toying with the idea of renting a Landrover. Is there anywhere i can Green lane? Thinking during the day as i don't think the wife and son will be up for a long hike.

I've done the road to Mallaig a couple of times already.

Thanks in advance.

May be best to try the tourist information centre:-

http://www.visit-fortwilliam.co.uk/

They should know where there are vacancies. I think it will be a busy time with lots of skiers staying their.
They can also advise on vehicle rental.
Best of luck.

Thanks Dougie.
I know where i.m staying and will rent a Landrover from here. It was photography locations that i was looking for. Wondered if anyone knew of a little gem somewhere near that they didn't mind sharing.

I go to Scotland quite often and was just after something a little different this year.

Ardnamurchan or Mull...........

From Fort William, drive a little South to the Corran Ferry. Cross there and just drive. The scenery is breathtaking. If you go right down to Lochaline and take the Mull ferry, you can take the little'un down to Tobermory. (Balamory for the kiddies)

where have you been - we can then eliinate those places and suggest others.

Trossachs National Park,
Ben Nevis,
Applecross

are a few to kick off with

You're not far from Glencoe, Rannoch Moor, Glen Etive etc. etc.

Not sure about access with a Landy in these parts in Scotland though.

If you don't want the usual Ben Nevis shots, try this walk as an alternative:

It looked like this on a dull overcast day, I suspect it will be pretty spectacular with the snow and the waterfall in full flow (or even frozen!)

The walk up is a little tricky in places, but not overly difficult.

Thanks Dougie.

Sorry, I misunderstood. There was thread on here quite recently about hpotography from a Ft. William base. May be worth searching it out.

The western end of the Caledonian Canal, the Corpath sea lock and Neptune's staircase locks are all well worth a look in. I was up there in the summer and got some really good shots. Saw Neil Oliver filming for Coast while I was up there too. He was on a sea going vessel comnig up the staircase locks. It's all fairly walkable from Fort William too :)

Glenfinnan is only a short 13 mile drive from Fort William. Commando memorial in spean bridge, which also has great views of the grey corries, ben nevis etc.

Glencoe is absolutely breathtaking mate, but check the 'midge' situation at the time you would be visiting and make sure that you take plenty of repellent if necessary, I had never seen anything like it when I was there last year!

The network of footpaths high up behind Ft. William are well worth a visit; smashing views over the loch and access to Glen Nevis - they are very easy to access from the town if time is short. (3 or 4 miles, roundtrip)

No midges in February. Plenty from Spring to Autumn.
