Hi All,

I am planning on visiting Liverpool for the day and wondered if anyone had any advice of where to go, what to shoot and what can be covered in a day reasonably without running round like a headless chicken.

Any ideas and thoughts welcome, I have never been before!

The obvious place would be the Albert dock and Liver Building. Also if you get the time take a trip to Formby just north of Liverpool to see Anthony Gormleys "Another Place".The iron men statues on the beach.

Get on the Mersey Ferries at the Pier Head and get good shots of the waterfront too. The two cathedrals, the big wheel near the Arena by the Albert Dock, you could also get on the Merseyrail and go to New Brighton for Fort Perch Rock and lighthouse depending on (the weather!) and what you're looking to shoot - touristy or 'off-the-beaten-track' and whether you will be commuting or driving...
The Anglican cathedral do Tower Tours on certain days and times if you really want to go to the very top for a panoramic view.

Get on the train to Chester! A much better place and a train journey away ;)

EFA: A visit to Formby to see the red squirrels, and a visit to Crosby for the Iron Men :)

Sorry had a brainstorm there.I visited both places in the spring yet I still got it wrong.Glad someone was paying attention.:(

Doesn't surprise me that, appalling as it is. Funnily enough I've taken a few in my time and I'm sure there would be more of a 'threat' if you took pictures inside the arena than out, but hey...

Lime Street station is looking better since the front has been landscaped.
The nearby St Georges Hall, museum and library are worth while too.

If you visit the National Trust property on Rodney Street (I think it's a famous Liverpool photographers house), they do a link bus to their Speke Hall, which is also worth snapping.

Liverpool One is the new shopping area opposite the Albert Dock.
You cannot miss it and will no doubt walk through it.

Hope it helps

Thanks for all the replies so far excellent stuff. I have added all this information to my list and suplemented it with info found from google.

If anyone has any more ideas please keep them coming.

Thanks again.

Theres a photo exhibition at St lukes bombed out church ATM. China town has the biggest chinese gateway in Europe. Pier head and albert dock is mahem in the day but at night the lighting is brilliant. St Georges Hall is meant to be worth a visit. Must get there myself!

You can do tours of the tunnels walking under the roadways and the view from the top of the anglican cathedral is fantastic. All things that have been on my to do list for way too long.

Got to be the Anglican cathedral, incredible building and fantastic views from the top.

For something a bit less touristy, how about Stanley Dock?

Think it'd be great for some B+W.

If your shooting the Pier Head, the best time to shoot is either side of sunset, it's less busy then also.

it will take you three days to get the door open because it hasn't been opened in years ;)
But what treasures await you when you do. ;)

And at least there is a door to open.

Seriously, you may have to book ahead for a trip to Anfield, as I would imagine it would be quite busy at this time of year with the kids off school.

If street photography is your thing, then there is a Carousel and Helter Skelter in Church St, and a mini Roller-coaster on top of Liverpool One. Should be many interesting faces around these attractions. ;)

New brighton on the other side of the mersey is good for landscape panos of the 'pool plus you get a nice ferry trip

Excellent, excellent. Again all added to the list.

Another thing I have just thought about is parking. Any suggestions of good (read safe) places to park?

Liverpool One has a multi-story car park I believe? Underground as well I believe?

If you fancy seeing a couple of very important 19th century buildings, check out Oriel Chambers and 16 Cook Street built in 1864 and 1866 respectively by the Liverpool architect Peter Ellis.

Oriel Chambers was the world's first metal-framed, curtain-walled building and prefigures just about every skyscraper built since.

FWIW, the Liver Building was the first Britain's in Britain to feature a reinforced concrete frame in 1911.

How about Matthew Street..the Cavern...some good buildings... exchange flags.. dale street, the building with the turning artwork the pierhead with the 3 geaces, the new museum building and the canal opened up, .... the waterfront is good from the ferry you can see the 2 cathedrals, 2 graces, echo arena, big wheel, radio city tower, lots of other stuff. Too much to see in one day!

interesting place for any photographer.

I've got a trip to liverpool next week and was gonna do my own thread on the same subject.

I'm looking forward to doing a bit of architecture work especially the liver building.

Fantastic stuff, really appreciate what everyone has posted. Not long now before I go ans have to say I am quite excited as to what I shall see and be able to photograph!

If its of help to anyone thinking of going i shall update the thread with what I consider can be convered in a day once I get back and also of course will have a thread with some pictures.

Thanks again all!

i want to do this also and don't particularly want to drive but the train fare from Norwich is horrendous :(

Avoid this if you can, I'm reliably told that it costs about £8-9 for a few hours in Liverpool One QPark unless you want to stay near the waterfront for convenience. I would say, stick to NCP rather than QPark car parks. I'm pretty sure on-street pay-and-display parking is free after 6pm or 7pm.

Parking - Plenty in the City, but it can get costly.

It may be better to use Liverpool South Parkway station (Not far from Speke Hall) and get a return ticket which works out cheaper than parking and is probably quicker than car if you don't know you're way around (they run every ten minutes). Not sure if you have to pay to park at Liverpool South though. If you do, the first station on this line is Hunts Cross, also not far from Speke Hall. It has it's own little car park which is free, but plenty of free street parking and the area is fine - just don't leave anything on show as is the rule any where - also, don't use the shops car park as it's pay and display and they do clamp.

Place to visit

Thought of somewhere else - Dream in St Helens. Google it - a massive piece of art in the shape of a head; very easy access off the M62.

A couple of pics of the Dream at St.Helens.

I took some snaps of Dream at the weekend.

I did some PP on mine to remove the construction lines, but I’m not sure I should have. Is it part of the art and should be kept in the photo, or is it a consequence of the construction and therefore ok to PP out?

I prefer the pictures without, but I feel like I’ve cheated the art in some way.
