Does anyone else have trouble with this.....?

By trouble, I mean.....

We're off on a little Welsh "road trip" next month - 7 nights on the Anglesey/Snowdonia border, 2 nights in Aberystwyth, finishing with a long weekend in Tenby before heading back to Bristol.

Now, obviously I'm aware of some of the more famous locations we might find ourselves local too - several of which are "must sees!" as standard. But it can't be just me who seems to start with "right, best find us some things to do" and soon end up with "I don't think we'll have enough time to do all of this"

Do I have to list all the locations/areas & give them stars out of 5 for priority?
Do I have a 'reserve' list?
Do we just do the famous?
Do we do the more unknown?
Do we do nothing because we can't decide where to go?
Do we throw a dart at a map?
Do we put everything in a pot & do a lucky dip each morning?



Oh, and what cameras & lenses should I take? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Dart on the map could be fun. I love Wales. There are so many beautiful sights.
 
Go with the flow and let the weather determine the following days activities - take the projected wind speed into account and remember it can be a few degrees cooler at altitude (and winds stronger)

I usually do this and am prepared to change plans based on weather
 
Just stop obsessing and make a list and go for it. You might miss some experiences but if you'd done them you'd have missed some you had.

Camera, FF and a prime between 24 and 50mm and you'll be fine.
 
I'd make the list, then lucky dip based on the weather and how everyone feels on the day :)

It was more of a tongue in cheek type post, mainly because the to do list in these situations can easily grow as most of us are aware. And we end up needing twice as long on holiday.

I've got a few definite places I want to go for sure - and some of those will be sunrise etc on my own anyway. I've found a few areas and walks that are more suited to the wife and the dog. And then other places can be little stop off on route if we've time or can need bothered. There's certainly no pressure to do all of it :)

Oh, and Yashica Mat 124g, and the A7Riii with the 35GM & Tamron 70-180mm - the X100f will probably go in the pocket too. Oh...... and I might take the night sky 'kit' :)

Off on your own while the wife and dog go for a walk seems a great idea! ;)
 
I'm in the same boat, off to Riyadh in 4 weeks but then having a week in Anglesey, want to make sure I take the opportunity to get plenty of pictures.

I'll definitely visit South Stack lighthouse, maybe even North Stack, not sure what else, want to do plenty of walks with my wife and dog so will probably just snap whatever we see while we're out. :)
 
As usual for married men, just go where you're told, when you're told to!!! Hopefully enough of your suggestions will meet management approval.
 
If there's two of you, you pick what to do the first day, she the second, you the third and so on...if either doesn't want to do what the other has picked then they can go off and do their own thing that day.
 
^^ that's a bit mean though leaving her back in the accommodation all day lol

We're pretty well matched, there won't be anywhere that one wants to go and the other won't want to go I don't think. It's never an actual photography holiday, but we both know and accept that somewhere like this will be based around photography. Just because she's not a photographer, she still enjoys the photography locations.

Sounds exactly like my wife, thankfully she's very laid back and happy to plod along with me, in fact although she isn't a photographer she has a better eye for it than I do so she'll regularly say 'oooh this would make a nice shot' :ROFLMAO:

Any places you could share mate would be great!!

Same for me. I think you can learn to have a better eye for a shot but for me it can never be as good as someone for whom it comes naturally.
 
I don't have the patience to hang around for more than a few minutes for a shot. I have been known to plan to be at a west facing spot from where a sunset just might be worth anticipating! Especially if there's a bar there...
 
I genuinely struggle because great photos take effort, and having a great time also needs some thinking about and the two very rarely overlap

On holiday, having a great time (and enjoying it with co-holidayers!) is more important than chasing a great photo (and I'm fairly sure they can all outrun me anyway!!!)
 
Only thing you haven’t taken into account is the total road chaos in north wales , it’s now at the point that I don’t bother going out on Fri/sat/sun due to either accidents or simply amount of visitors jamming the roads up .. parking is a nightmare and don’t even mention the 20mph fiasco

As I said, the other half loves looking at the views as much as I like capturing them so a balance won't be an issue :) It's worked for the past 11 years :)

Well, that's just something to deal with on the day I guess. Or nice early starts..... Or try to pick those days for the lesser known villages and areas.....

It's the 20mph that worries me. We have 20mph areas but they are signposted 20mph with 30mph as the "standard" - it's 20mph as "standard" in Wales isn't it unless otherwise stated?

Half the people on the cough "Speed Awareness Course" I attended recently had been 'done' transgressing the Welsh 20mph speed limit.
 
Beddgellert is a must, a stunning village with a few nice pubs for grub

No lee it applies in most built up areas but as a example ,I live just over a mile from the A55 to get to it it’s 20mph for a couple of hundred yards , then 50mph for a couple of hundred yards then 40mph for the same , then 60mph and then you get on the A55 which is allegedly 70mph but is usually a mobile car park especially on Fri.sat.sun and prone to lots of accidents and strangely enough lots of car fires ..
And be very aware the Welsh government have invested heavily in camera vans ( usually well hidden) and an ever increasing use of camera posts to monitor your speed between them .. but we do have nice scenery and free prescriptions :banana:

P.s quiet a few roads have recently reverted to 30mph but signage not yet changed back .. but none in the area your heading for .i think ,maybe, confused .com .. :headbang: also be careful roadside parking in Snowdonia even if lots of others have as they tend to tow your car away to the police pound

Rhosneigr is a good day out for you all,wonderful beach for the dog,some shops for the Wife,Oyster Catcher for very good food then sunsets for Photography.
Sounds like a super holiday and if this weather keeps up I couldn't think of anywhere better.
 
PS ,if your going to Tenby you must pop to Saundersfoot.
I'm sure you have a long list of places to go but if you need any pointers give us a shout( mainly dog friendly )

Personally I dont do the lists of places, but I do usually have an idea of what I want to see. For holdays I go light with gear, crop sensor and 18-135 plus my compact.

that is what my wife decided to do, throw a dart at a map on the wall. Looks as if our holiday is going to be spent behind the fridge

Both those already starred on Google Maps ;) Thank you. Hopefully, seeing as it'll be a weekend, I'm hoping the Green Bridge of Wales will be open!
 
Conway castle is beautifully lit up at night, if you get clear skies as it goes dark long exposure colours are incredible.
 
Whatever you plan, for some of your locations, you will realise that you were not there at the optimum time of the year/day/hour and perhaps the weather was not ideal or the tide ideal. Make notes and you can benefit from any subsequent trips. I think you will want to go back.

There will be lots of improvisation and making the best of what I'm given I think :)

We can thank Richard Brunstrom for this, the North Wales Police Traffic Taliban. You do need to be aware of where the 'Arrive Alive' vans will be parked.
