New years resolution is to get the flash off the hotshoe and as such have just ordered some strobist gear and very much looking forward to it.
For playing, I can trigger my SB900 from the pop up flash on the D7000 ... but ... I am planning to start off camera 1 or 2 speedlight setups fro weddings we have booked next year. Think first dance, lots of people taking images and flahes going off all over the place, I worry that using the pop up, even if IR triggered, might not be reliable.
Firstly, I would like to ask opinion of reliability of this setup for people that have used it in this type of situation.
Secondly, if triggers have to be employed (especially if firing more than one speedlight off camera) can anyone recomend a good quality trigger that does not breaK the bank as much as PW ? I know you get what you pay for etc. but I simply do not have funds for PW at the moment.
Lastly, should I be considering TTL triggers. Not for exact exposure but thinking they may get me quicker to the ballpark where time is pressing ?
TIA

Ebay search for "RF603 D7000" for manual triggers.

Your D7000 can also command flashes wirelessly by CLS if you want TTL, or otherwise TTL triggers start at around £70 a pair.

Thanks, I have rf603's for Canon (they sent the wrong ones) was not sure how good they would be for a wedding. What TTL triggers are £70 a pair ?

the only difference in the models of rf603 is the cable that comes with them to use it as a remote shutter for your camera :)

Dunno, I'm an all manual guy. Could be wrong, think they're around that ballpark though. Check out the 'lighting rumours' blog.

was shooting pentax when they sent the Canon triggers, will dig them out and have a play, thanks. Have nit seen TTL triggers that cheap, will investigate.

I think the only other issue with regards incorrect system 603 transceivers is the fact they won't wake up the nikon speedlights. However, a press of the test trigger will fire the speedlights and they'll then be awake for the amount of time you have determined within the speedlight menus.

Jeez, yeah forgot about that ....
Setup for first dance, speedlights eight feet in the air, click, nothing ... that would be good !

I will order a pair of Nikon RF603's for now, just to be safe. Canon 603 pair about to go up for sale :-)

Did the Canon ones work perfectly with your Pentax?

Dont work at all, even tried reverse engineering them and left only the centre pin wired but as they are transcievers it does not work as it needs a tx / rx signal as well. One of my frustrations with Pentax. My friends Canon pixel soldiers work very well on Pentax, however. Decent build quality and sync reliably at 1/180th.

When I have time and money I am going to make my own trigger, been threatening to do it for years, reverse engineer a PW and make it cheaper with better features. 20 years in electronics manufacturing should be put to some good use at some stage :-)

I use RF602s and/or Pocket Wizards.

But for first dance I tend to use CLS. You're in a confined area in the dark so it works well. You can adjust flash power and turn guns on and off from the camera which is awesome.

Thanks. At the moment I only have one cls flash :-( Hopefully get another sometime soon ...

D7000 can trip CLS can't it? Plus fill too? All you really need for most 1st dance.

Yeah, D7000 can trigger SB900, would like to add a second light to have cross lighting across the dancefloor (speedtrap !)
