weekly Treehugger81's 2015 52 challenge - Week 9/10 - Vertical and Mouth added

Nice shots Phil.

Companions
Do like that shot. Bang on for the theme.
As Lynne has pointed out, the effect in the sand does make it lok like a long exposure.
Nice detail and colour in the sky.
Not sure if it the angle that the photo was taken or if the horizon if off slightly to the left... think its my eyes

Elegant
Love the silhouette effect
Nice detail and colour in the sky.

I think they are vents for the sewerage treatment works, the final process before the water is discharged to the sea..

Hi, two really nice shots they do need to be seen much bigger elegant is very good indeed

Hi Phil

Elegant - it's a lovely shot and I like the composition, but it feel's more like a scenic shot than elegance to me too

Phil .. I'm impressed.

Scenic ... luscious folds.

Companions ... beautifully composed.

Elegant ... you know elegant when you see it.

Scenic: Love it, such dramatic scenery.

Companions: A little too dark on the right compared with the left I feel but a cracking image nevertheless.

Elegant: As has been said, could suit Companions better but an interesting picture.

2 very nice pics companions is a great capture elegant ? it doesn't say elegant to me (but what do I know I still have nothing for this week) but still a super shot

Companions - that is one cracking picture :clap::clap:

Elegant - love the silhouette here and definitely says Elegant to me, might be a bit smelly close up though :p

I had the exact same image idea for companions - the sunset shot of the couple holding hands, you captured it well! Good selection of photos so far, I'll keep an eye out for the rest!

Thanks for the critique guys. Elegant seems to have split opinion on whether it fits the theme. To me it's the design of the vents that's is elegant, but maybe that's just personal taste. Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

Week 6 - Watery

Been for a mad weekend in Manchester with a friend and as of late am taking my camera with me everywhere, which I have come to realise I didn't do enough before this challenge. Came across this fountain in Albert Square in front of the town hall and thought it quite fitting. I know that colour splash isn't everyone cup of tea, but the light was pretty dull when I took the shot, and it wasn't really popping when I converted it to B&W so the added colour makes the shot a little more interesting. Looking forward to your comments.

Watery.....I like it very much.
I tried to think of a similar fountain nearby with no luck!

Hey Phil.... Some cracking shots so far! Love your elegant entry - really striking!

Watery: I think the colour splash has worked out well on this - feels the right kind of colour to compliment the B&W without being in your face if you know what I mean? Nice shot [emoji5]️

Companions - like the colours and sky. I think I would move the people left just a tad but like it nonetheless!
Elegant - like this a lot, would look good as an album cover
Watery - like the colour popping and think it works very well here

Fragile - These are views and conditions I recognise well after living in Blackpool for 12 years. We still go back to visit the in-laws up North Shore but have to admit it’s been a while since getting the camera out at the cliffs.

Scenic - Another view I recognise. Brother’s Water used to be a favourite stop off point when visiting the Lakes. Unfortunately I feel the time of day and lighting conditions haven’t helped bring the eye to the water at the bottom of the valley. Definitely worth going back to as a location though

Companions - Last time I was on St Annes was last July when we were part of the kite festival. Watch out for the event again this year and if you want to get a little closer with the camera to the big inflatable kites then let me know before hand and we can arrange something. I like the composition of the sentinel and the couple walking. Just a slight CW rotation needed to fix the horizon but other than that a nice image which has had a complimentary aspect ratio given to the crop.

Elegant - I don’t recognise these. Are they in Blackpool? If so , whereabouts? I do like the image. Their shape, the side lighting, fluffy cloud and negative space all make a strong image.

Watery - A throwing up gargoyle LOL. Maybe the background is a little busy. I don’t normally like selective colour but I feel you applied it sympathetically to the subject.

watery - I think this works very well, it i a shame about that lamppost though :-)

Cheers Ferg thanks for stopping by.

Nice take on the theme Phil, good image.

Thankyou Phil (y)

Thanks for the critique Hazel. Like your idea of the album cover (y)

Watery - I think the sc works well here, composition is good, the only thing I find distracting is the lamppost in the top right of the image.

Hey Mandy, now you've pointed it out I can see what you mean. Not sure I have he PP skills required to get rid of that lol. May give it a try and see what happens.

I quite like that. Nice composition and I think the selective colouring actually works well in this instant.

Thanks Stan.

Hi Peter, thanks for taking the time to give me some feedback. The kite festival sounds very interesting and I will definitely be putting that date in my calendar.

The pipes/vents in elegant are either side of the sewage treatment plant at Manchester Square on the prom. They are quite recent additions from the renovation work that was finished up last year if i remember rightly. Would like to go back at night and/or at sunset as they light them up from the base and they look pretty cool.

The background on watery did bother me a little when i was taking the shot. I tried to get the background as much out of focus as I could but could maybe work on the technique more. An increase in the bokeh would certainly make the background less busy and would enhance the overall look. Thanks again for popping by.

Thanks for commenting Lorraine.

Hi Phil

Scenic - nice shot (have some like that myself) but I reckon it could do with a stop of exposure (maybe less)?

Companions looks good - nice framing and composition but I'd much rather see larger images on the thread than smaller ones - maybe my fault as I have a widescreen laptop!

Elegant - that's a beauty. Bit of lens flare either adds to it or detracts depending on viewpoint, but I'd love to see that at sunrise/sunset!!

Watery - it works but it's not grabbing me. Feels a bit too mono with limited contrast range... would prefer whiter whites perhaps?

Water, I didn't notice it was SC. Main issue for me is it's under exposed with a bust background. Maybe a little wider?

Cheers.

Hi Phil

Watery ... interesting and different, more detail on bigger Flickr image. A bigger version on here would be nice. (y)

Hi dood, your the second person to mention the size of the pics on here. Not sure how to make them bigger on here as I'm just linking to Flickr.

I don't Phil. It seems most 52ers use Flickr but not me! Maybe have your pic open full size on flickr when linking it.

Week 7 - Bold

i struggled a little with for an idea with theme. I came up with a couple of ideas but to me the following shots suited the theme best.

#1

#2

I ride past this building a couple of times a week and have always thought that its a very bold piece of architecture for it surroundings. It sticks out like a sore thumb on a piece of coastline that is pretty flat and featureless. Never really taken photos of architecture before so another step out of my usual photographic subjects.

As always thoughts and comments greatly appreciated

Certainly BOLD design Phil and Bold and Brave if you live there too (I hate heights and like solid ground beneath me ) I have no crit and well done for getting out of your photographic comfort zone (y)

Both nice images Phil ... of Bold architecture.

the first one is a little dark, maybe underexposed but don't trust me, I'm not a doctor :D the 2nd one is just right though, much better light here. Fits the theme for me too :) oh yes and on the 2nd one the colour in the clouds sets off perfectly the colour of the building  the more I look the more I like. Don't know how much space you had to the left but a wider crop might suit it too.

Definitely need to be bold to live there so it's definitely not for me. As Bruja said, I like earth beneath my feet and very close to my feet at that.

Hi, not sure the first one works for me but the second one does, a very bold piece of architecture some nice light on it too

Hi Phil

love the 2nd image for Bold...wonderful lighting, beautifully sharp & a great backdrop of blue sky & moody clouds

Really nice images for your bold theme!

Hey Summer, think I agree about the under exposure in the first shot could do with working on that as I struggle sometimes. There wasn't a lot of space on the left but I agree that a wider crop would give a little more interest. I was waiting for the sky to light up at sunset, and although the light was pretty good it just didn't go that extra mile. Thanks for dropping by.

Definitely need to be bold to live there so it's definitely not for me. As Bruja said, I like earth beneath my feet and very close to my feet at that.

Think I would enjoy living there to be honest, the veiws would be amazing looking out over Morecambe Bay. A little bit brutal when the storms hit though.

Hi Phil,

Bold - they both certainly hit the mark - great take on the theme. I prefer the second image of the two, nice work :-)

Okay after a brief sabbatical I'm back

I really couldn't get any inspiration for relax and as such i was reluctant to move on without shooting at least something. I eventually had an epiphany, I shot said idea and it was rubbish :arghh:...........so i'm gonna keep it at the back of my mind whenever I'm out and about and if i find something I'll post it.

As for the other themes below are my attempts.

Week 9 - Vertical

This is the view looking up the clock tower which is situated in Stanley Park Blackpool. I work there as a gardener but get the chance to wind the mechanism on the clock twice a week. There are weights that are integral to the mechanism and the space in the shot is where they are housed.

Week 10 - Mouth

This is my friend eating the best beef and onion sandwich on the fylde IMO, from Salt of the Earth a small deli in Carelton.

As always comments and critique welcome. Im going to try and get round some of your threads as I have been neglecting that aspect of this challenge and know that you only get out of something that which you put in.

Don't let the themes get you down. It's easy to get hamstrung by something bad. Just use an extreme shoehorn and move on. No one minds really. I think it's just important to stay along for the ride. Looking at other photos and trying to improve your own over the course of a year is no mean feat.

Vertical is a bit dark for me - which is what you might have been aiming for. I wonder what it would look like with the contrast pushed a bit harder to bring out the texture in the brick? It's bang on theme though and an interesting story to go with it.

Mouth turns my stomach! I'm not a huge meat fan so that's probably why. Technically it's ok and it's definitely on-theme (unlike my entry!). Focus on the food, no distracting background all good. It's just the subject that's doing nothing for me I'm afraid.
