I'm in the market for a replacement tripod. My current traveling tripod is a Gitzo traveler that I have had for over 5 years now and it's tired........it needs replaced. Unless someone else can recommend another brand I will probably stick with a new Gitzo traveler or maybe an Really Right Stuff tripod but I have no idea about them apart from them so called being good...............

Morning Neil

IMHO Gitzo mountaineer series - as you suggest

I treated myself to a Gitzo Traveler GT2545T kit in preparation for a trip to NZ earlier this year (using it with a Nikon D750 and various lenses) and couldn't have been more happy with it.

I went back and forth between it, the Traveler GT1545T and the Mountaineer GT2542. In the end, the two series 2 models felt more substantial and the Traveler saved a little weight. The Traveler range was updated last year, so the specs of the legs appear to be the same as the Mountaineer (and the same diameter in the two models I considered) and the locks aren't far behind. The main difference is the top 'spider' which is much beefier on the Mountaineer.

I had a series 3 four leg section Systematic, light, 55cm folded length, but the spider/top plate had a large diameter as did the legs making it harder to carry.

Also still have an older carbon Gitzo G1158, folds down small 47cm, very light 1kg, slightly flimsy fully extended though and it's height with the centre section down is a bit short, still use it a lot though.

In the end I bought a GT1532 Mountaineer, three sections so bottom leg is a bit larger diameter, not too long at 60cm folded and to me a good compromise.
Still ok for a day wandering about and sturdy enough for more specific stuff like low light long exposures, really pleased with it.
