Got a big trip to South Africa coming up in three months time. There will be lots of road travel with visits to game parks, cities & the coast at various points. I don't want to take a tripod - not least because of the weight. Also, I don't know how practical a tripod will be in most of the locations to be visited.. I'm now wondering, though, if it's worth buying & taking a travel monopod to provide some stability in certain situations? So, are they worth the money - in other words is one likely to get much use.? Are the expensive travel monopods worth the extra cost?

Thanks for any thoughts.
 
If you're driving through the Kruger (for instance) it might be worth investing in a beanbag to balance on the car window ledge
 
What sort of lens/camera combination are you planning on putting on it? For safaris, I've found that a small bean bag is more useful than a tripod if you're in a 4x4.

I've got a Canon EOS 70D body & I'll be taking the following lenses - 10-18; 18-55; 70-300.
 
A bean bag is essential when driving around in a 4X4. I would also recommend a tripod for landscape shots (using your 10 - 18) and the Manfrotto Befree would be perfect for this. I bought the Befree tripod for a jaunt around Europe and as much as I didn't want to take a tripod with me I am so glad I did. The Befree is small, light and compact. It is also quick to put up and pack away, and since it comes in its own case it is always to hand when needed. I use the Befree for my 6d and 16-35 f4L set up and it is plenty man enough to support the weight. It will just about support my 6d with 28-300L but there is a bit of creep with this combination - I am not bothered by this because I use a smaller and lighter lens for landscapes. Before dismissing a tripod I think you should go and take a look at the Befree and take a trip to your local camera shop. You need to see one of these tripods in the flesh to see how good they really are, get a feel for how strong they are and also see how small and compact they are when packed away.
 
I've tried a few travel tripods and sold a few I had a 3 legged thing Brian and sold that then got about 4/5 after that but went back to the 3 legged thing Brian it was the best of the bunch
