Travel tripod - cf - (Got tripod, now need a head)

My head has exploded...... wow this is complicated.....

How would something like this plate work in conjunction with https://www.photoproshop.com/product_info.php/cPath/21/products_id/1131this head ?

I want to keep the weight down and don't want to keep swapping plates unless I need to.

The 3rd paragraph below the illustration of the head states that it is compatible, with Kirk, RRS, Arca Swiss, Wimberley etc.

Generally the better quality heads are "Arca Swiss" compatible, and Kirk plates meet this standard sizing.

Brilliant, thanks for the help and advice all of the contributors to this thread.....

I just ordered

  • Markins Q3T head (in red just for fun)
  • Kirk universal plate

Might need to think about the specific plates for my 5DMK III and 7D...

Have you considered either of the following:

Giottos MTL8360B
Manfrotto 055CXPRO4

Both are 4 section tripods and will be a bit sturdier than the 5 section vitruvian. They don't come down as small but are still very compact for their level of performance / weight capacity.

I'm looking at either of these myself for my next tripod. No idea what head to get yet though...

Hope this helps :)

The Giottos and Manfrotto are much bigger than the Gitzo 1542 I have already bought, they both weigh more and are much bigger folded.

I actually have a Red snapper Carbon tripod already that is decent but very bulky and reasonably heavy... I use it when I am driving to a location, I wanted something to fly with and jump on the train and lug round London without just not bothering an leaving it at home...

Thanks for the input though....

Have you got the head yet and if so how are you finding it? I'm looking at the exact same combo atm although need another months wage to come in until I have enough to buy.

Think I need to get down to a local shop and have a play :)

I've got the 055 CXPRO4, it is a fantastic tripod to carry around as it is light yet sturdy. I had looked at the 190 version which is even lighter, I just did not think it was sturdy enough.

I have a junior geared head, which in itself is a very capable head, I just feel it is a little heavy. May get a lighter head as well. If weight was not an issue the 410 geared head is amazing.

The 410 head and 055 CXPRO4 is huge in comparison with the GT1542T and Q3T head
