Me and the missus are off to Greece in a few weeks for 35 days bumming about.
We are looking at travel cover with the usual stuff but are struggling to find cover with decent camera/gadget cover. we are taking the following

  • cheap laptop £300
  • her go pro with sd card £220
  • my em5 mkII body with two primes approx. £1000
  • her kindle and cheap tablet £100 each
So we need insurance that will cover us for say £1500

most we are looking at limit it to £300

Check your house insurance you might be covered already. We were burgled while on Rhodes and the travel insurance, which was the best the operator had to offer, was useless. We had cash and jewellery worth £2500 stolen and the house insurance paid out.

check your cover very carefully - our house cover was only good for us being away for 30 days ,leaving the house unoccupied.

We do have household cover, I also want it in the travel insurance to make things concrete.

The 30 day rule is for stuff in the home not away from the home. My standard policy covers up to £5000 anywhere in the world for personal possessions away from the home.

You are not making anything concrete as each insurer will ask if the posessions are covered on any other insurance. If you then answer yes, in theory they can (and will on larger claims) split liability. You are therefore paying twice for the same cover.

Have you got an itinerary for your `bumming about trip` or just decide when & where as you travel?

(we're off to Crete in late Sept)

sorry I didnt make that as clear as I could, our hotel room was burgled not our house. we had an engagement ring watch and other gold rings stolen and the value of goods covered on most travel insurance policies, from what I found out afterwards is very low. The insurance were only going to pay out £250 in cash and £200 personal possessions minus a £50 excess.

ferry then to crete for 6 days in chania then bus to heraklion for 9 days then ferry to aos I think for 5 days then ferry to tinos for 7 days then ferry back to Athens for 1 more overnight then fly home.

maybe but the extra costs is minimal as it comes as part of the medical cover so an extra £20 quid or so is money well spent.

yeah it has worked out very will, we are both self employed directors of our own so we managed to work it all in.
I am just working out my camera gear as we are going very lean on kit just carry on.

Personally, I'd spend as little time as possible in Heraklion! Noisy, smelly, crowded modern city IMO. If you want to sped a while towards the East end of Crete, somewhere like Analipsi or Annissarras (spellings for both are very variable, even on the road signs!) but NOT Hersonissos or Malia (unless you're between 15 and 25 with a death wish on your liver and no self respect...) In our experience, the further West you go, the more civilised (quiter and laid back) it gets, with Elafonisi at the South Western tip being our idea of heaven (for a couple of days and nights.)
