Was up in London the other night taking a few snaps on the iPhone, and looking back I wished I had something a little better with me!

Ideally looking at around £350 max and want something that is not too bulky and with a lens that is either very small or can retract. A bit of zoom would be nice.

Seriously thinking about the Canon G12 and its size is pretty much perfect and it will fit in my fleece pocket or not be too bulk when hanging round my neck!

Anyone have any other suggestions for around this budget?

Something like the Olympus XZ1, Canon S100 or Panasonic LX5 might be a better pocketable camera.

I've a Canon S95 and it knocks out some cracking results. It has the same sensor as the G12. Also, it's a true 'pocket' camera, which I find useful too...

You can get them a lot cheaper than £350. The S100 which supersedes it may be around that, but I'm not sure it's really worth the extra.

Just my 2p's worth

I've just bought a secondhand G11 for about half your budget and it's a cracking little(ish) camera. As far as I could tell the only thing it can't do that a G12 can is HD video. Great quality and more control than a smaller compact. It mow travels most places with me.

+1 for the S95 - terrific camera and fits in a shirt pocket.
