This might be a daft question but i'm going on a photography holiday to the lake district tomorrow and seeing as my laptop recently died im being forced to take the desktop to dump my files and also use it for all my location planning (all on google earth etc)

Now whats the best way to transport it as i'm slightly worried about it getting damaged on the journey.

Was thinking about just wrapping it up in towels etc and either wedging it in the boot amongst all my other bits so it cant slide about or wedging it behind the passenger seat (travelling alone in a seperate car)

Any other ideas as i really dont want another computer to go pop?

or am i worrying about nothing...

vibration will be the killer.

maybe ask a local pc shop if they have any old case cardboard boxes with the foam inserts.

one reason i always keep my case boxes, come in handy when moving house.

Back in the day when my workplace had been broken into a couple of times I used to take my PC base unit home with me every night!
Never did it any harm. I can only think components may have improved on 10 years or so ago, so I'd not worry too much. A fresh backup before you go wouldn't be a bad idea though.

The only part of a computer likely to be damaged by transporting it is the disc. But when not spinning these things have a very high shock rating. So in the boot, wedged against sliding around should be fine. For belt and braces protection, pop out the disc and carry it in the cabin on a seat.

Worry not, Phil, I've transported a lot of computers over the years with no problems, just wedge it in securely.
