Transferring Photos to iPad

Please excuse my ignorance but how do you transfer photos from your computer to an iPad.

Or you can use the camera connection kit and transfer direct from a memory card (especially if the computer isn't the one you use to sync with).

Only thing is if you transfer them from the camera kit your a bit stuck if you have CF cards. There is a thread on TP where someone has got one of the 3rd party CF card adapters, in fact I'm going to buy myself one.

The big gripe for me is when you add photos it's difficult if not impossible to create seperate directorys directly on the IPAD, I find it really frustrating :( so if you know how to create a directory or album directly on the ipad please tell me how :)

I've transferred from CF, I think the problem is more to with the card reader (only one reader out of 3 would work).

With regards directories, no, I find it equally annoying that all images lump into the same non-customisable directories as well.
 
Thanks guys, I did not want to transfer direct from my D700 as I may want to pp images first and did not know what method is used since the iPad has no USB connections.

The Apple camera connection kit comes with a USB connector. I have PP'ed images then put them onto a memory card (though I normally use a SD card for convenience) and just use the connector to upload them. Especially when I'm working with a netbook that isnt the usual iTunes sync machine.

There are some apps available that allow you to organise your images into self-created directories, I tried one (the name escapes me atm), but deleted it, I'll try and find it again

I too use dropbox, but I use the IPAD to photographing damaged in transit computer parts. I'd love to be able to move the pictures into a job related directory at the time I take them.

Just seems really poor of Apple not to give the option.

I have to admit I'm agravated by a lot of things Apple do including locking down the ipad so it won't let you use non Apple apps.

I know you can jailbreak it, but then the camera kit doesn't work :(

I think the iPad with iTunes and Aperture works brilliantly together. Do what ever you want to organise in Aperture, leave your files in RAW and iTunes handles the rest without creating duplicates on your machine etc.

If I really need to offload photos direct onto the iPad, then it imports directly into Aperture like any other dcim format directory.

PS. Have you checked out the Bento app? iOS doesn't utilise the old concept of directories that can be shared by applications, however that doesn't mean you can't share the information. Bento can have work forms integrated with photos and other media if you so desire.
 
So here's an update from me, in the early stages of testing out but so far so good.

I have the camera kit, mainly because I use SD cards in my 1d3 as well as CF cards.

Like most the thing that bugs me is the lack of being able to create folders and move photo's around into them.

I've found an APP on App store called Photo-Sort. It allows you to create custom directories and move your photo's into them, it also allows you to FTP into your Ipad to do the same. The app is less than £2 so worth downloading and having a look at.

Now to the downloading off a Compact Flash card. As you will know by now most CF card readers draw too much power from the Ipad and won't work. The CF adapter that one of the guys on TP has done a report on is probably the best option but being a skinflint I got one of these

It's a cf usb reader in the form of a pendrive. They cost including postage a couple of pounds. If you plug one into the USB adapter from the camera kit you have exactly what you need to download direct from a CF card.

I've tried it with a number of cf cards and it works with all of them.

The only problem with photo-sort is the folders are only available through the app ?
 
I bought the MIC CF reader direct from the company. It took 10 days to arrive from China and it was a little expensive (although not when compared to Apple's SD connector) and - It Works!
 
I think I remember seeing the ability to create photo albums is coming in iOS5.

does I tunes not also "optimise" the images for you and shrink the size?

its a shame there has not been more "photo" tools for it, my wife just brought an ipad and we took it on holiday and is totally smitten with it, but was a little upset there was no way to get the photos from my camera onto it. I suspect I will be tasked with getting them onto it later this week, thinking of dropbox photobox seems to have an app also and most of my photos are on there from when they have been printed so I think that might also be useful.
 
It only optimises when you sync photos store on your computer via iTunes. Which to me makes sense as I don't need the raw files back on there, so iTunes/Aperture automatically convert for iPad.

However storing photos direct is easy via the camera connection kit and it doesn't so anything to them that way. It is just a dcim folder that they get stores in exactly like on your camera without alterations. Only the photo viewer app has got the rights to view that folder or via a USB connection as storage device.

So absolutely possible no need for disappointment.

The photos don't take up much space at all. Ultimately it depends on you, how many albums containing how many photos do you want to sync to it.

I depends on what else you'll be using it for. I really like using it to watch TV programs or films when travelling by train, so I'm very glad I picked the 64GB model. With three movies and five TV series on there I have less than 7GB free.
