Hi,

Just wondering what people use for training material - covering the technical sides of photography.

Iv found quite good channels on youtube - b and h video and adorama to be the best ones for content.

I was wondering what people would recommend for reading material and/or courses.

I have bought 'Complete Guide to Digital Photography' by Ian Ferrell but I find it doesnt go into too much detail and only provides a brief overview - a very good quick reference guide though

Photography (the technical aspects) is relatively easy, and there's no shortcut to the fact that practice makes perfect. The more you do it, the less you have to think about the technical process.

Then you get into specialist skills. Depending on the type of photography this varies wildly. And your learning needs will be unique to you. Whether that's posing, lighting, processing, colour theory, composition, field craft, sports rules etc etc.

So from your images, and your critique, what are your learning needs?

The other consideration is then how you learn best? Books workshops videos etc all exist because we learn differently too.

Creative Live have some excellent content, free as it airs, then available for sale.
 
Find something easily accessible that you like to photograph that other people have too, such as a local church, a local view, a spider, or a cat. Find the best photograph you can find of it. Try and repeat it. Work out why you failed. Rinse & repeat.

There's something in this, I can't remember how and when I learned to 'read' an image to reverse engineer it. But it's the most useful tool to have in your toolbox.
 
One thing that people do not seem to consider these days are art galleries. I found these very useful for studying composition As the artist did not have the constraint of only being able to record what was there. But was free to place things in a scene as they saw them.
