My heart goes out to the families affected by the tragic accident in Accrington yesterday. Two lives were lost, an 89 year old and and 18 month old child. The mother of the child is in a critical condition in a nearby hospital, God speed for a quick recovery. There are very few words that one can say at such a very sad and emotional time, and a lot of questions that we can't answer. Be strong for each other and know that you have the love and support of a small community behind you.

I realise that photographers (despite what level they are at) are put in disrepute for taking pictures of such events. But if there is anyone out there in the community who may have witnessed or have pics of the ordeal, please present them to the authorities because they may just be what they need to piece everything together about what happened.

Thank you for taking the time to look at this post, and please keep in your hearts the families who are suffering from this unfortunate incident.

What incident is this? Car accident? street mugging?

sounds like im "rubber necking", but abit more info might help people who were in the area if they know what they are looking for

There's one that desperately needs answering, why people of 89 are still allowed to drive without any kind of monitoring, this is something the government needs to address, there's no requirement for anyone to check on the ability of elderly drivers, all that happens is they get sent a form asking if they're still capable of driving.

Nobody will give up their independence voluntarily so they just keep driving.

This is a tragedy for all concerned but it needs looking at

I have no connection to the families concerned. I am just a concerned local citizen reaching out to every possible source for information, and using all sources available.

This is an incedent that is weighing very heavy on the hearts of the community and any information would be valuable to both the families and the authorities.

Totally agree, I have seen many a pensioner not having a clue - be it driving far too slowly, not pulling out when they should, pulling out when they shouldnt and just not being in control. At 80 you should be made to re-do your test every 2 years, a nominal say £30 fee and obviously just to gauge general competence, and not 'do they cross their hands when turning etc...'
 
I personally think there should be a ban on driving after a certain age! But then that could be contravening a personal or human right.

But the question then is ...... should there not be a human right to life? We need to speak out for the young children who can't yet express their views.

Perhaps the gov need to enforce a medical restriction ........ i.e., at a certain age people are more prone to diabeties, heart attacks, strokes etc.

My question is .... what was someone aged 89 still doing driving? My grandma passed away in November last year age 95 (never having driven a vehicle in her life) and believe me she was so physically frail she would never have been able to control a vehicle.

Maybe it is also time for family members to take control and responsibility of the older living generations. If you are concerned about you elders driving capabilities, DONT LET THEM DRIVE. Take they car keys away, remove the cars, do what you have to do to save the lives of others (and perhaps the lives of your own loved ones!!!)

Some serious thought needs to be given to what has happened here in Accrington and the rest of the country!

Let's preserve the life of our offspring ...... not let it be run down by the respected elders.

:agree: a very sad thing indeed :shake: but tbh aged drivers may cause frustration whereas young drivers cause accidents :thinking:
 
I'm not saying older drivers should have their licences ripped up at 70, I'm saying there should be a competence test, perhaps just a reaction test in a controlled environment, a simulation of driving would be enough, it used to be that a doctor would have to approve a pensioners licence once they reach 70 but that's been changed to a self certification form asking if you have any medical conditions that would prevent you from driving.

If they haven't been to see a doctor they can just tick no, if they lie and still tick no who's going to check until they kill someone :shrug:
 
Drodd, As sad as it is, banning drivers because they are over a certain age isn't the answer.

Yes ok, some OAP's are weak and 'not all there', but a lot are as competent as you, me, and anyone else.

My parents used to run a gym, and they used to buy a lot of equipment off of these 2 old folks who ran a company selling the equipment. You would look at them and think "They probably couldn't dress themselves let alone lift gym equipment' but they were 2 of the fittest people I've ever met, and they were well into their 70's. They would regularly move gym equipment ranging from 20-60kg dumbbells, huge exercise machines etc all without help at their unit, as well as also being very much 'there' mentally.

If you ask me, it should be treated like the aviation industry. Every driver has to pass a thorough medical every 2 years. Fail it? bye bye license till you can prove, if possible, you're fit to drive.

The amount of 'unfit' drivers about, especially truck drivers and coach drivers - there are so many walking heart attacks in-charge of 40 tonne machines and coaches with many other people on-board.

Like I said, a regular medical (physical & mental) for every driver would cut down these accidents dramatically. In my opinion.

R.I.P to those killed, and I wish a good recovery to those hurt.

tbh, I don't think anyone would have been taking photos of it as it happened, more freeze with shock and then run to help? and afterwards surely the police would take their own photographs? due to it being a fatal RTA as the local force around here does.
