Yes
One for the guys.

I had the pleasure last week of visiting a traditional barber who, in addition to cutting my hair, also did a fantastic shave with hot towels and the ubiquitous "Something for the weekend sir....:

I would be interested to find out how many such establoshments still exist around the UK

It is something I took for granted 30+ years ago but stopped having the full works for far too long. Better shave than I can manage myself.

So point them out, do you use them for a shave and who knows, I may just have a bit of a tour!

Had a full beard for about 30 years so never had a traditional barber shave! There are a couple of Turkish barber shops in own who do them though. As for the hair, I had it 1/2 way down my back until about 10 years ago when I went for the #2 or #1 buzz cut. Mrs Nod is also an apprentice served hairdresser so has tended to my coiffure for the past 27 years or so.

theres one in cardiff, but at £35 for a wet shave and another £35 for a haircut it aint cheap!

Can't say that I've every really felt the need for a wet shave from a Barbers.
There is at least one "traditional" in MK that I know of, but I've not heard the phrase
"something for the week-end" in many years.

I paid £32 all in! Top haircut in Bath is £15. no shave. Someone is having a larf!

I go to Swansea loads so a stop in Cardiff might be worthwhile even at those prices.

I wish I had the need for something for the weekend. ;-)

Ah maybe that's why I haven't heard the phrase either then :(

Mind you I do go now and again, to a local place, that does a good hair cut for £7.50
Run by women

And I'm pretty sure the size of the tip, is directly proportionate,
to the amount of times I get a "boob stuck in my ear" :D

Same price in Midsomer Norton and the boob/neck ratio often leaves no change from a tenner....

Twentyman's in Crosby, Liverpool. Traditional barber and shaving establishment. It's like an Aladdin's Den of sports memorabilia. Billy Twentyman is the owner. His Dad was the chief scout for Liverpool FC for 20 years. See article here http://www.lfchistory.net/Articles/Article/2883 - interesting story about Brian Clough. No love lost there!

There is only Billy and Phil that work there and they are great people. No airs and graces, a good laugh, a tipple with your haircut and shave if you like, and you may bump into the odd footballer or two. Jamie Carragher goes in. £9.00 for a wash and cut. Worth every penny. I was in last week but had to be careful. They are both ardent LFC supporters and my team just pipped them to the title on the last day. I was not going to give them grief when I had a pair of clippers near my ear! Been going in since I moved to Liverpool. It is very busy so if you are in the area you will need to give them a call and book in.

Chris :)

Haven't been to a barbers in years as the top of my head seems to be the only part of my body that has no hair :(

Only once had a wet shave when working at a tech college that had trainee hairdressers/barbers. It was free and I actually had hair then. Whilst the shave went fine I was a little nervous and I have never had the inclination or desire to repeat the experience :).

Not that I need any excuse to go to Liverpool but that sounds a winner and I have a friend from Bootle who is getting married there in August.....

Fly to Turkey, its only two bob for a shave, haircut, nasal flame and ear hair singe. Then eat their fine food and drink their even finer beer with what you have saved.

But if they ask you anything about the weekend, run,fast..............:)

Did the shave involve a honed and stropped straight razor, or a straght razor with a removable disposable blade?
If the latter, it wasn't traditional.

Viv - a very useful point.

I had my first 'traditional' shave 39 years ago. So I know tbe difference between a disposable bladed pile of rubbish and the feel and experience of the carbon steel of a 'cut throat' razor, hand stropped and lovingly cared for. Back beyond that event 39 years ago all the men in my family used the same for their daily shave. As youngsters we werd not allowed to touch the razors which would split hairs so easily.

For any here cursed with the need for a daily shave due to strong beard growth neither an electric razor or the latest 3/4/5 blade disposals will remove the need for second or third run through, but I will testify to the joy of a traditional shave, done properly by a honed razor. No septic stick or bits of tissue stuck all over the face if the blade is kept properly.

So yes Viv I absolutely agree with your very useful post as it should be a pointer for any here who are prompted to go for the full experience. The razor with dispoable blades are not the way to go for sure.

I am hooked again.

When I'm in the UK, I use a Turkish barber in the nearest town. About £7 for a haircut, and they do a good job. I've been wet shaving since I was a teenager - a long time ago - and I'm quite happy with the results, no desire to have a barber shave.

Eons ago, I got my A-Levels at 16 instead of 18, took a year out and trained as a barber, then worked at that whilst putting myself through both degrees at Uni. No student debts etc :-) Result.
Certainly wouldn't suggest anyone trust my hand with a straight razor these days though!!

Glad you cleared that up, I was about to ask how you knew so much and had visions of a bearded lady.:exit:

I just always liked the freshness of the air on my face after the hot towels etc.

We have a Turkish barber near us, who charges about £10 for a cut and singe, but I don't like the smell of burning hair/flesh after (even if they do splash the cologne around liberally), so I go back to my traditional barber.

Place in York, Cads for Men, £15 quid for the wet shave and trimmings. About the same for a haircut.

I've cut my own hair for years, I never visit a Barber. I have various trimmers and clippers (about £100 worth I suppose). Because my hair is cut to the same length all over this is the most cost effective way for me ( I do have a full head of hair too, I ain't no slapheid;)). Beards are a mess and I wouldn't have one. The end!!!:D:)

last time I got asked "something for the weekend sir" I asked for a 100ft yacht and a myriad of bikini clad beauties !!!! no smile, nothing. :tumbleweed:
