Hi guys
I would appreciate some honest opinions on trading in my D300 and 17-55 against a new D700 body. With a bit of luck I won't have to add too much cash either. I hardly shoot wildlife. Mainly people and things.

So my question is would you, have you etc etc?

I have, and have never regretted it. There are times when I wish I had the extra reach from the crop factor, but I know that's silly.

I never use flash, so to me the high ISO capabilities of the D700 were a God-send; as was the offer from Andy (puddleduck) when he put one of his D700 up for sale

The one little bug that gets under my skin is the 95% viewfinder. If only it were 100% ... but we can't have it all. Of course, as we all have, I have a list of things I wish the D700 had ... but in all honesty, it's a good step up.

Trade in value for D300 from someone like London Camera Exchange would be £500/700 at best, they would sell it at £900/1000, the lens would be £400/500, they would sell at £700/750, make you own mind up, but me personally, for a little bit of effort, sell it yourself and make an extra £600 on the deal, you won't get the best deal for trade values.

Oh yes, don't do a trade-in .. you'll lose a lot! I sold my D300 here on TP, there are always buyers .. especially if it's in good / excellent condition.

i really wanna get the D700, but dont wanna give up my D300 due to wildlife, and motorsport.

But you already have the D80 and D70 .. both give you the crop factor; also, get the 1.4 TC for the 70-200 and you'll be fine  .....

.. point to be made, don't make excuses, just go get it :p

i already have a 1.7 and 1.4 teleconvertor.

i will be selling up the d70 evently and maybe even the D80.

not sure yet.

but really like the idea for the high iso etc..

Oh, you'll love it  ... just think of usable ISO at 6400  .. seriously doable and with very good results.

Yep, agree with this. I use 6400 without any problems, little noise but nothing major. But having seen some samples of the D3s with even higher ISO

I have the same dilemma, only had the d300 for a few months but the idea of a d700 is tempting.

Exactly the situation I was in!

I bought my D300 in Aug. '08 as a replacement to my dead D200; but then in Nov. / Dec. '08 the offer on the D700 came. To have kept the D300 for only 3 ~ 4 months and lose out by selling it wasn't a very good thing to digest .... but the ISO capabilities of the D700 won me over.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. If I were to go this route I would probably sell here anyway. It's the hi ISO that is really tempting. Food for thought.

Go on...*nudge*...do it...*nudge nudge*...do it do it do it...go on...you know you want to...

Oh great, this is all I need now

Paul - do it mate. Your photography doesn't need a cropped sensor but would really benefit from the DOF and low light capabilities of a FF sensor.

HTH

That's what I just said Ryan :)

I agree with all your comments. Just go ahead and DO IT!!!

(now who's going to be the first to offer me their mint D300 at a nice price??? :D :D :D)

 If I was to sell, and its a big if. It would only be with the 17-55 (as it would be no good to me on a 700. I'll have to think hard on the money front as i've just forked out on a new pc too.

Ryan & Julian......... cheers guys

Oh yeah, if it did happen, i would only have a 0mm and 70-200 for a very very long time, but i would assume that would work out pretty good still.

what you get from d700+24-70 is not way better than you get from d300+17-55, trust me I used both of these combination

There is no underestimating the wonders of the D300 & 17-55 AF-S; but the D700 & 24-70 AF-S is a different ball game .. especially if you use ISO 3200+

I must admit, the high ISO is intriguing to say the least.

For me, image quality of the D300 just isn't in the same league as the D3/D700 so if it were me I would. I only use my D300 if I really need to do so...

I find the D3 to give far more pleasing results at any given ISO but if you think you'll need the higher ISO ranges, all I can say is 3200 on the D3 is IMO much more pleasing to the eye than 800 on the D300!

Gahhhh so so tempting.

You could just hold fire on the D700 and go for a D3 - thinks thats what I will do.

But what would the D3 offer over the D700 and grip? But either camera will be awesome.

100% viewfinder, two cards / memory and no built-in flash; to me the lack of flash is a plus as there is less parts that could go faulty and provides for better sealing.

Though, on the negative side, I don't like the extra bulk!

I can forgo those but would love to have a 100% viewfinder. In fact I would give up the flash for the viewfinder.

Exactly my sentiments, I wish Nikon would introduce a D700s without the flash but with the 100% viewfinder .. that would be great for me

Hi Paul,

I was in the exactly the same position as you a few months ago, and since i took the leap to the D700 haven't looked back. I promise you will not regret it one little bit.

I am in exactly the same boat here I have the d300 and am considering the D700 for the iso/noise capabilities....I am becomming more convinced everytime I read stuff like this.

If you can afford the FX lenses, it's a no brainer. You'll never look back.

I'm about to go straight from the D200 to the D700, wanting both the FX full frame and the high ISO capabilities.
However I'm told the D700 has metering problems and that most users have to have exp comp dialled in permanently AND tweak in PS. Not keen on that, for this kind of dosh I want reasonable results OOC.
So what's the story D700 users?

Nick

Just bought 300 2.8vr to go with my D300 for motrsport, effectively 420 2.8 or 600 f4 with 1.4TC. What I want to know is do I swap my D200 for a D700 as a second body or wait for a used D3 when they all change for a D3s

If you can afford the FX lenses, it's a no brainer. You'll never look back.

But that's just the thing ....

1) You don't need FX lenses ... D700 / D3 / D3s / D3x can all use DX lenses in cropped mode

2) Like for Like .. FX / DX, there isn't much of a price difference (take the 17-55 f/2.8 DX AF-S vs. 24-70 f/2.8 AF-S). The price difference is marginal when you factor in the whole cost of lens & D700, and when you consider the longevity of the lens vs. body (lens could last you a good 10 years or more .. the body you'll most likely change within 3 years).

3) If you have to go on a shoe-string, then get a few primes ... or 3rd-party lenses even.

4) Some lenses are just not made in DX format .. take the 70-200 f/2.8 (whichever manufacturer) they're all FX lenses. Most prime lens are FX ..

Thanks Craig.

I'm off to Rome in Feb next year so i might try the Dixons duty free route, if it's viable. It#s a big outlay for me though at the moment and have to convince myself i#ll need the upgrade. It may well be a bad case of upgraditus creeping in.
