Tracer's 52 - week 52 - "Texture"

Loving the lighting you have going on here...superb, and great framing for me... really like this a lot...

Needs framing and puting on the wall mate...:thumbs:

Thank you - I'm so glad you like it. John, if you look closely you will see it has SEVEN strings :eek:. Fortunately I don't have to play it! It is my OH's pride and joy, with a gorgeous sound. It plays in the cello range.

Thanks - I hadn't thought of that but you have given me some ideas....:) The lighting was pretty straightforward - just a standard lamp (just had to watch for reflections in the varnish) and flash bounced off the ceiling.
 
Music, really enjoying the instrument shots that folks have done and this is no exception, it has a really warm feel to it. Lovely
 
I'm so glad you all like the viol - it really is a beautiful instrument, both in sound and to look at.

With a little nudge from the crowbar ;) I'm using more of it for this week's theme:

This is the carved head of a gryphon at the top of the peg box. I always think it looks a bit anguished -- maybe it's in pain from having its guts (strings) stretched! :gag:

And Merry Christmas to you all! I haven't been here long but am really enjoying it - thank you for being so welcoming, encouraging and inspiring. I'm really looking forward to next year's 52 (I think!)

You've brought out the depth and contrast of the carving beautifully.
Maybe a touch dodgy on theme - then again, I expect I'd be in pain if my guts were being stretched :lol:

I'm getting increasingly fascinated by this instrument - any chance of a full shot just to satisfy my curiosity?

p.s. I'm glad that you're enjoying the 52 and that you're sticking around for next year.

You're not getting the crowbar for that one! It's much closer to the theme than my crowbar efforts were!

It sure is a beautiful instrument, and nice to see you could put it to good photographic use again. :thumbs:

Sorry I've neglected your thread for too long...

Confusion: That made me laugh out loud - really good interpretation of the theme for me although I'd agree that technically it is not your best.

Music: Lovely lighting... the colours are lovely and it is really clean looking if you know what I mean. The movement in the string definately adds to it as well :thumbs:

Pain: Crowbar is always handy in these situations isn't it :D That aside I like it - bags of detail and again the lighting brings out the best in it.
 
Excellent shot, on theme too, the pain is obvious... and if you don't have fine tuning pegs on the other end of the instrument, that's gonna be real painful to tune also as it's direct tuning... Well done, no Crowbar...

Thanks for all the lovely comments, and I'm glad you don't think the crowbar is necessary this time. I did think of doing a closeup of my broken tooth but put the idea quickly out of my mind, for my sake as well as yours! :D

Sarah: I'll do a full length portrait when I get the chance.

jgs: As you say, it is direct tuning. The pegs actually work quite well but the strings are gut and very susceptible to temperature changes. With 7 strings to tune every five minutes for the first half hour it is not surprising the gryphon feels like screaming!

Spartacus: BW like this? I'm a great fan of B&W but I think I like the warmth of the colour version.

I don't think it's a crowbar job either. I think that apart from the Pain of tuning it, the expression on the carving is definitely suggesting some kind of pain to me.

Love the composition, and I prefer the B&W version as it's much cleaner and therefore less distracting :clap::clap::clap:

Your Pain is lovely :) that carving is terrific! A bit of a squeeze in themewise but I having submitted a loaf of bread for pain I can't talk :)

Your health is really well done - an idea I toyed with but not with a dynamic approach like yours - timing is great! Nicely done :clap:
 
thats a great shot!! the hands are pin sharp but you got the movement of the wine perfectly aswell well done!!

I'm going to jump on the band wagon and say that I thought about this set up too, but didn't have the time or patience to set it up.

TBH I'm glad I didn't, because I don't think that I could have done it as well as you.
The hands and glasses are so sharp and you've caught the sloshing of the wine brilliantly. Well done! I love this :love:

My family are getting quite enthusiastic about the challenges, and having my daughter home for xmas made it much easier.

Surprisingly, it only took the two glasses. I was prepared for a lot more, and had loads of newspaper on the floor. (Actually it is camomile tea...shhhh! Easier to clear up.) The red background is a red dressing gown hung over the door - nothing too high tech ;).

Thanks Sarah! I used an off-camera flashgun set to low power, giving a very short flash which froze both the hands and the 'wine'. What I didn't know was that using the Nikon CLS to fire the gun from the camera doesn't allow continuous shooting - I need to get a sync cord for that. So instead of being able to shoot at 4 fps and choose the best shot, I had to conduct my models: "One...two...CLINK!" :D

I feel a bit embarrassed at starting the "52" challenge so late compared to the rest of you - this is only my eleventh image. I'm really looking forward to continuing next year -- a big thank you to Simon for organising it again.

Texture.. Very nicely done, I like that. Lots to look at in the textured core and nice lead lines to it :thumbs:
