Tracer's 52 for 2010 (part 1) - Wk 26 -"Beginnings"

love the image of the castle. Works well in B&W

Agreed - nice image - I tend to up the blacks in B&W conversions, but I like the effect here.

Phil

I really like the shot for 'isolation', but it doesn't scream the theme to me. Perhaps a slightly looser crop showing more of the surroundings would have helped? I like the B&W conversion, look very sharp too

Thank you, JL and Phil

Thank you, Chris. I agree that the crop is a bit too tight for the theme but there were a lot of people milling around on the left!

Life has now settled down a bit, thank goodness, so have caught up with the themes and will catch up with comments asap.

Week 22 - "Quality"

quality28462flmnr.jpg

This grandfather clock was made in 1860 and has been going ever since. My granny bought it in 1900 from the original owner and it has come down my family to me.

At the bottom left you can just see the top of a metal tube, suspended by an old bit of string. This is the chime - melodious but loud - which causes unwary visitors to leap out of their skins if they are anywhere near it. At the top are the nesting metal cups which play tunes at odd moments, a different one for each day.

All in all I think this a piece of quality Victorian engineering - good for another 150 years!

Ideally there would be no shadows on the background but the clock is tucked in a corner and I couldn't get a flash in behind it.

Week 23 - "Post"

I had a couple of better ideas but it would have meant travelling a couple of hundred miles.... so made do with this instead. At least I am now up to date.

post2795.jpg

No, the sky is not really that blue in this part of the world but a little under-exposure works wonders!

Bit catch up for me, Tracer. :)

Ingredients: all the ingredients for beautiful music. I hope the concert goes/has gone well. The shot works for me just as it is, and I like the little extras in the music notation (although as a rusty keyboard player of of little ability, I admire the ability to cope with all those ledger lines! :))

Stop: This is a really different shot - I'm glad you left the shadows in because they add a lot to the photo. What a lots of Stops, too.

Isolation: I love the dramatic look - infrared at its best, imo. Lots of interest in the building - shapes, textures - everything.

Quality: You've done a top job on this. I used the inner workings of a bracket clock for a theme last year and it was near imposible to control the lighting. This looks spot on and I like you explanation of all the parts. Lovely shot and definitely Quality.

Post: Good composition and I like the graphic quality. It's a difficult theme - but this fits the bill. :)

Some cracking shots in that lot, Tracer - and even more impressive when you've been so busy. :)

Jean

Love the shot for "post". You've made a boring subject look really good, the lovely simple blue sky works well with the shot

Well, that is one quality clock mechanism.

Great Post shot too.

Good catch-up Tracer:thumbs:
I like your quality image, well done with controlling the lighting on what looks like a difficult subject. Your background story definately confirms it as quality. An interesting subject, your image does it justice.

I like your post image too. It is a simple image but your composition works well, I like the colour in the sky too, the post contrasts well with it.

ps, your clock would work well for this weeks theme of metal too ;)

Iain

Like the detail in your quality image, nicely lit and bang on theme.

Can see what you were trying for post, think it would work better for me had you been lower down and had an upwards view.

Hi Tracer, I am having to catch up on your catch up.

You've really been posting some great shots. I love isolation - fits the theme really well and I really like the processing.

Quality is a very clever idea. I like the way you have included the face and the works. Definitely quality workmanship.

I find post amusing and a good take on the theme. As posts go it is rather intriguing and I love the composition and the colours.

Well done.

Jenny

Thank you, Jean. The concert went really well. This part wasn't nearly as high as some others I have played!

Thank you, Darren. I thought of waiting for some interesting clouds but decided a plain bg was better.

Well, that is one quality clock mechanism.

Great Post shot too.

Thank you, Paul

Thank you, Dan. I agree in principle about the post but it is growing out of a jungle of large shrubs so I couldn't get any closer.

Thank you, Jenny. The 'post' is the telegraph pole behind our back fence, which carries phone lines to several houses in the street. It is leaning partly because of the angle of the shot but also because a large tree blew down on top of it a couple of years ago!

Excellent quality clock images.. Lovely...

Post works for the theme, and love the sky colour...

I had fun down by the river this week, enjoying the sunshine and the fantastic skies. I can't decide which of these images to choose - both are iconic landmarks in Glasgow which are next door to one another.

Week 24 - "Metal-1"

armadillo2913b.jpg

This is the metal-skinned Clyde Auditorium, popularly known as the Armadillo, completed in 1997. I've played around with a bleach bypass process as described here.

Week 24 - "Metal-2"

crane29761c.jpg

Next door is the Finnieston crane, built in 1932, standing 50 metres tall with a 77 metre jib. It was used to load boilers and engines on to ships, and also railway locomotives for export around the world. Now it is sometimes used for stunts - there was a charity zip slide across the river last month which I was dying to do but unfortunately wasn't free.

bit of a catchup on your thread for me
isolation, excellent tones and contrast and an amazing set of ruins.
quality, nice time piece and amazing clockworks but the angles don't work for me,
post, quite like the composition on this, the post taking you in and then pick a line to take you out.
Metal, both good images, i think the crane is the pick for me, good composition and simple.

2 really good shots for this week.
I think I prefer the 1st image just because its such a striking building.

Thanks Chris and Darren. I couldn't decide between the graphic quality of the crane and the wierdness of the armadillo.

Glad that things have settled back down for you. Not sure if it's the time of year, or just halfway blues but I've been finding this 52 a bit of a struggle the last few weeks.
Good to see you still hanging in there and keeping up to date.

That quality shot is just gorgeous
The angle really appeals to me. Not only can you see all the workings, but that perspective has really emphasised the engravings on the clock face.
Beautiful warm tones - there's something really solid and comforting about this one for me.

I like both your metal shots too.
I'm drawn towards the curves and the sky in the armadillo. That bleach bypass treatment has really worked and it seems to have emphasised the blue in the sky and given a really odd (good odd IMO) feel to the trees.
It's a shame that you've just caught that square metal box in the bottom left though. Maybe a step to the left and you could have avoided it.

But the crane is a really powerful image.
Lots of strong, graphic lines and they're reflected in the streaky cloud formations.

I'm finding it really hard to decide between them, so I think I'll just sit on the fence this week.

p.s. That zip slide across the river sounds terrifying . . . you couldn't pay me to do that !

Thank you, Jean. The concert went really well. This part wasn't nearly as high as some others I have played!

I'm glad the concert was a success, Tracer. I'm even more in awe - I'm only happy at middle C.

Metal:

The Armadillo (I wonder how it got that nickname? :suspect: ) works really well - and I have to ask - what's a bleach bypass process, please? It sounds painful! I agree it's a pit about the box bottom left, but I wondr if it could be cloned out? :)

However, the crane just pips it for me because of the composition, simplicity and sheer impact. A mighty pice of metal indeed! You certainly found inspiration for this theme :clap::clap:

Jean

Thank you, Sarah and Jean. I agree entirely about the "box" on the left. It is actually temporary fencing shutting off the building site where they are starting on another ?auditorium. There is an awful lot of street furniture as well around here and I was wandering around trying to find the best place to shoot. Unfortunately moving to the right brings a large garish sign and some flagpoles into the shot. I tried going forwards so that these were behind me but then the wide-angle caused too much distortion. Even in this pic it is a bit more stretched than it is in real life - it really does look a bit like an armadillo. I cloned out some poles on top of the fence but don't think I'm up to cloning out the fence itself. Still, in a few years it should be gone!

Both shots for metal are excellent... love the processing on the armadillo... but I think the crane edges it for me... They fit quality too...

The crane is my pick of the two. I like the angle of the jib as it cuts through the sky and cloud formations. The processing work well on both too.

Thank you, John - I think I agree, too.

Thank you, Paul. I waited ages for the clouds to get in the right place. I kept giving up and packing my camera into its bag before cycling off, only to get it out again - I must have looked a right eejit!

What kind of a theme is this? :bang:

The best I can do is this shot of one of my manky old trainers. I nearly threw them out but kept them for gardening - never thought they would come in handy for a photo subject. :D

Week 25 - "Grunge"

grunge3011postcardd.jpg

Thats definately grunge Tracer, I have a manky old pair of trainers for gardening too, never thought to use them:thinking:.
It is a simple image but works well, the desaturated look adds to the grunge theme. Well done, here's hoping for a decent theme tomorrow night. Iain

Great idea for the theme. I'd never thought of something like that.
The background helps add to the 'grunge' feel of the shot.

Simple and effective, Tracer - I like it & wish I'd thought of that for an image...

a very grungy image indeed... nice one. as has been said, simple and effective.

I very nearly did something similar with my gardening trainers, but I couldn't find the right location or angle for them.

They certainly are VERY grungy (although I think mine might actually be a bit worse)
Nice composition too, with the shoe on the diagonal.

Hi Tracer,

I like both of your metal shots. Both are very appropriate for the theme. I cannot make up my mind which I prefer but I love the composition of the crane shot. Pity about the box on the Armadillo shot. It really is an intriguing building.

Grunge - great shot, very grungy and even on a grungy background! Well done on an awful theme.

Jenny
