Tracer's 52 for 2010 (part 1) - Wk 26 -"Beginnings"

That's a very well executed shot. Spooky thing is a used a very similar image for last week's theme of speed. It's all in the interpretation! :)

I like that, very effective processing and a good take on the theme :)

I really like the shot and is put together really well.
Just out of interest what lens did you use?

nice interpretation of the theme, great lighting and love the blur of the second hand moving.. :)

Thank you, Michelle - I'm really pleased the way the second hand came out.

I hadn't even realised it was a PS job until you thanked your hubby. Good movement on the second hand and the workings show through pretty well, although I'd perhaps like to see a little more. Lighting is tricky on these shiny surfaces so you've done well to limit the reflection.

Thank you, Darren. I experimented quite a bit with how much of the workings to show and how much they should show through, but didn't want to make the whole face too messy. Also, this is a self-winding watch so a lot of the cogs and wheels are obscured by the big fly wheel. The works you do see are at a larger scale than the watch - artistic licence!

Present is much better when you read the text, and then spot the excellent PP work you've done on it! I never noticed first time round. Good work.

Love speed too. Perfect shutter speed. Just enough to retain the detail and convey the speed

Thank you - I felt it needed a bit of explanation (not a crowbar, really :))

Sorry, catching up a bit thanks to my good ol' internet connection, or lack thereof, should I say:bang:

Speed - I think this a lovely shot. It looks very peaceful to me. I like the trees being out of focus and I think you have acheived just the right amount of motion blur.
Just a shame we only got to see a tiddly snippet of what looks to be a great, detailed layout. But then that'd require a different shot anyway, of course.

Present - nice 'n' sharp. I like the second hand movement. Hadn't even noticed the wonky strap until I read your text.

Thank you, Rob. The layout is still a work in progress though it looks pretty good already. It is quite difficult to photograph, though - maybe I need to try some panorama stitching. Although it is only on a basic 8' x 4' base there is a lot of track, with two figure eights and a loop spiralling up over three levels and through four tunnels. I have never managed to work out the elaborate system of points so I can't run it by myself.

Really like that - I also like the movement of the second hand

Good image - like the sweeping second hand!

Thank you - I wasn't sure whether it would come out but it moves in little jerks, stopping just enough to register.

Yes - I remember yours - a much fancier watch. :)

I like that, very effective processing and a good take on the theme :)

Thank you - it wasn't my first idea and is not particularly original, but I'm pleased with the way it turned out in the end.

I really like the shot and is put together really well.
Just out of interest what lens did you use?

Thank you Darren. The lens is a Nikkor 60mm AF-S micro which I got s/h from Ffordes. I am very pleased with it - it is very sharp and a manageable size. The working distance is supposed to be too close for bugs but then I am not wanting close-ups of bluebottle eyes.

Absolutely seemless PP on this one - I'd just thought that it was a feature of the watch and not PP'd. Take that as a compliment because it was so subtle

Lovely clean, crisp shot and it works for the theme on numerous levels. Nice movement in the second hand and you've controlled the reflections brilliantly.
Really, really well done

I don't want to make you scream, so I'll keep quiet about the you know what thingy with the strap.

Love the train shot, it may have taken some experimentation, but you've done it justice and got a great result. Present, another good take on the theme, the longer exposure has worked well with the second hand, nicely done.

Another well thought out theme, well excecuted. I had to look again when some one else mentioned the PP work, so  on that. A good job your OH is handy because if I'd taken the back of it it would have been B******d.....Mick

Thank you, Mick - fortunately he is handy and he has a good selection of tools so there was no damage done. I didn't even ask him to to it - he offered off his own bat :).

I really like that movement on the second hand. Love the way the one second pause has allowed the hand to "burn" in with the tiny gaps between each tick. Really good exposure.

Looks level to me too :)

My only minor and opinionated concerns are with the PP. The word "automatic" seems to be floating, which is a bit wierd. The whole fade-to-internal-bits thing doesn't really work for me, but others disagree, so I'll just shut up!

Ian.

A nice bit of speed on that present shot. :)

Thanks you. Normally I never do anything like this kind of PP but these challenges are leading me astray...

A nice bit of speed on that present shot. :)
Thanks - a few curves in there too! :D

This was hard coming so soon after "Street". I like taking photos of friends and family but don't want to post them on the internet, and so it seems a bit unfair to intrude on strangers.

However street performers are fair game, I think. My work took me to Edinburgh last week and I had a quick look in the Royal Mile, always a good spot. I didn't expect this, though:

Week 6 - "People"

trfiddler.jpg

I couldn't choose from all the shots I took and in the end decided to combine two of them. How he could keep playing on such a freezing, miserable day, I don't know, let alone keep his balance.

I also found a several posers on the castle esplanade, having their pics taken by their friends. I only had a prime lens (85mm), more discreet but less flexible for framing. There were a lot of folk there as well as extensive digging work so difficult to get clear shots, but here you are anyway:

This guy was saying to his wife, "Hurry up, I can't hold it much longer" :D

As a violinist myself, though, my first choice has to be the tightrope walker.

I like the second shot of the violinist. I'm not sure why though. Great work

I like the Violinist shots and the way they've been framed together, I also like the girl getting her photo taken, I've just discovered in the last week that I like taking photo's of people taking photo's of people... I'm not sure why

I think I can confirm they're all people too so well and truly within theme.

Definitely people  great find and great capture!! :)

well I like them all, great candid shots :)

I feel the same about posting photos of people online, my daughter doesn't mind so went with her this week.. phew!

The first shot is a cracker. Great idea to combine the two pictures to really tell the story.

They're all good shots, but my favourite has to be the expression on the girl having her photo taken. Not sure who said it this week, but I'm finding the "people being people" shots very interesting.

Ian.

Your first combined image gets my vote Tracer:thumbs:
Nice candid images on what looks like a dreech day in Edinburgh;)
The whole set is good, I like the "people being people" said above, that sums up quite nicely.
Iain

Love the expression on the 1st shot! Nice timing.

Thank you, Rob - I think he must have had to concentrate quite hard on what he was doing. :D

I like the second shot of the violinist. I'm not sure why though. Great work

Thank you, Rich, so do I, and that is why I posted them together in the end. Although you don't see his face I love his pose, and I like the way the the red shirt/rucksack/bike panniers form another triangle to add to the rope stands.

Thank you - I felt that either on its own wasn't enough.

well I like them all, great candid shots :)

Thank you, Michelle - my children have grown up and moved out of reach now...

Love the first one of the man with the fiddle on the tightrope! Great stuff!

Thank you, Natalie - it's a bit hair-raising, isn't it!

Thank you, Dave. Like me you must have found that they are totally oblivious to anyone else so it is easy to muscle in on the shot. And there may well have been someone taking a photo of me taking a photo of someone taking a photo.....

Definitely people  great find and great capture!! :)

Thank you, Dave. If it hadn't been for this challenge I wouldn't have taken my camera with me - I'm so glad I did.

Thank you, Ian - I quite agree, and I may continue to do a bit more of it. I felt more comfortable with a prime lens rather than a zoom, which seems to shout 'paparazzi' even though it is only a mid-range one. Hurrah for the "52" which is widening my experience!

Iain

Thank you, Iain - it certainly was dreich and I didn't really expect to find anything interesting. If it hadn't been for the theme I wouldn't have thought of taking my camera.

Sorry I'm gettin so behind with your thread, Tracer. I'm still without my computer. :bang:

Present: An excellent conjuntion of Presents and the words and second hand blur add to the shot. You've made the most of this one - very well done.:clap::clap:

People: I sympathise with your views on taking photos of people and posting on the net, and it makes this type of theme really difficult. I salved my conscience with silhuettes, but this is miles and miles better! I agree that the violinist on the tightrope is the number one shot - fabulous, fun, colourful and very different from the usual street entertainers. I like the other shot, too, because it puts the act into context. A great day out with your camera, in my opinion.:clap::clap:

Jean

That first one is superb, well taken, colourful, and works well for the theme.

What a great set of photos. I prefer the guy on the tightrope and love all the reds which really stand out on a very grey day. Great fit to the theme. Well done.
Jenny

Thank you, Jenny - what would we do without red!

Like the violinist in week 7's theme, you could have used this in the streets theme as he is performing in the streets.
Well done overall:)

Thank you Chris - I could have used it for 'streets' if I had taken it that week, but only came across this guy the other day. :)

Thank you, Jean. I did have a great day with the camera even though I was pretty frozen by the end.

I'm sorry about your continuing computer problems - must be a real PITA. My monitor has been making funny noises and I am just waiting for it to blow up in my face...

That first one is superb, well taken, colourful, and works well for the theme.

Thank you, John - I just got lucky that day.

This was a much easier theme for me, fortunately, as I will be away for the weekend without any chance to take photos or even get internet access.

I popped into the Transport Museum for this close-up of a 19th-century horse-drawn fire engine. I'm sorry I forgot to note down the precise details of it, though. They don't make them like this any more!

Week 8 - "Mechanical"

fireengine17082small.jpg

I was using my fast 35mm hand-holding in available light - framing options were a bit limited by the time I had avoided various barriers and notices. It's the first time I have used ISO 3200 and I'm really pleased to see how usable it is - no noise reduction apart from what occurs naturally when downsizing.

Super set of shots Love the poetry one for it's quirkiness :) The Street shots are great particuarly like the closer one of the rope walker. Very nice detail in the Present shot....argh getting mixed up lol The speed one is great. I can't believe the lack of noise at such high ISO for this last one cracking shot!
