Tracer's 52 for 2010 (part 1) - Wk 26 -"Beginnings"

It is a little soft because I grabbed it in a hurry - I should have used shutter priority rather than my usual aperture priority!

It's a great shot and the only shame is that which you've already mentioned. I like the guy surrounded by all the words. Me - I'd be tempted to PP some headlines of my own in there, but that's me.

Following the thread with interest!

Ian.

great spot.. nicely framed and love the vivid colours.. I wonder if murray is still in line for that amount? ;)

A true street shot, well done. The only way I think you could improve this shot is to have the guy staring straight down the barrel, but maybe thats why you say you rushed it:thumbs:...Mick

great capture and loving the colours!

Just found your thread! What a crowded forum the 52 on is this year .

Chopped was a toughie alright. Hard to get much inspiration from it for a really good shot. But your curved and street photos are wicked .

Really enjoyed looking through all of your shots. Especially the one of you on the ice
Street is a really good composition, it's clear what the photograph is of and it's a familiar scene. Well done, I look forward to what's to come.

Well spotted, it's a good shot and fit's the theme nicely.

Sorry, Tracer, I got behind with last week!

...

Week 4 Street: That's excellent! Well observed and well composed - even more so if you rushed it a little. Ful marks for getting out there and doing it - it's definitely scary, although I find most people ignore me and those who don't tend to say things like 'Oh, are you taking photos?'

Jean

Thanks Jean - there are a lot of threads to look through, aren't there!

Well spotted. A good street shot there.

Blimey - you wouldn't miss him in a hurry would you!
Nice, interesting take on the street shot with the street seller! :)

Thank you, Martin and Nick

Thank you , Ian - I always find local headlines entertaining.

Thank you - I think he will still do pretty well out of it!

Thanks. There were a lot of people milling about and it was difficult to get a clear shot of him. Unfortunately I forgot to check the shutter speed which was too low for the zoom, so there is a little camera shake.

great capture and loving the colours!

Thanks, Dave. I was lucky with the colours - the background is just some temporary hoarding while a shop is being renovated.

Thank you, Steve

Really good spot this week.
I love the simplicity of the colours - red, white and black and just that little touch of blue.

Street photography really isn't my thing, but this has worked well - and for a shot taken in a hurry it's doubly impressive.
Thank you, Sarah. I was so lucky with the colours (from a temporary hoarding), as usually the backgrounds to these newsvendors is very messy. The blue loaves were a bonus. I'm just kicking myself for not checking the shutter speed first, but it has taught me a lesson. :)

Well spotted, it's a good shot and fit's the theme nicely.
Thank you, John.

Week 5 - "Speed"

speed1472small.jpg

It is not in the same league as Lasagnes cracking train shot but was perhaps a bit safer to do ... This is my son's model railway taken with slow shutter speeds and rear curtain flash. It took a bit of trial and error with shutter speed/train speed combinations and I think it could be better, but ran out of time.

I am not into model trains myself, and I kept sending it off in the wrong direction, reversing it into a tunnel. And once I was checking the LCD and let it crash into some carriages further down the line.

It is not a great shot but I like it as a reminder of the fun we had with the children when they were at home - they grow up so fast. My son left home some years ago but we still keep this layout. :)

Hope there's no lasting damange to the trains or you will be in trouble!

Like this although somehow it looks like the body of the train is moving but not the wheels.

It was just your excuse to play with a model railway for an afternoon wasn't it? Nice shot by the way. Playing with second curtain sync. isn't something I have had a go at yet.

 Sounds like it was a good week for you :

- You got to take a trip down memory lane
- You got to play with toys
- And you got to experiment with rear curtain flash and shutter speeds

I'd also disagree with your comment about it not being a great shot.
IMO it's worked really well, just the right mix of motion blur and definition on the train.
That railway set-up looks really impressive too!

I think its a great shot too.. great feeling of motion and speed and a nice story to go with it..

That looks like a very realistic lay-out (I'm told I can't call it a 'train set'!) and imo, you've got the blur just right - there's plenty of detail combined with a definite feeling of speed.:clap::clap:

I hope you enjoyed the tripdown memory lane, too. We kept a lot of our sons' toys and now the grandchildren are starting to get interested in them, so we get to play all over again. It's well worth saving this lovely set-up. :)

Jean

Very nice and well composed photo of a nice realistic set, it fits the theme perfectly

Whistlestop catch up....

Curved - wonderful shot, snapshot or otherwise. Love the light and texture, as well as the actual curves themselves. Excellent.
Poetry - really like that simple shot - nice background.
Chopped - definitely the tree stump for me - looks like a lengthy life story in that tree.
Street - what was that guy selling again??? One of those (good) pictures that keeps you looking at all the different adverts and stories, yet has a good focal point (the man himself)
Speed - can't make up my mind on that one tbh...probably would have kept the background trees in focus, to extentuate the motion...maybe.

Very good...well done.

Fortunately they survived my cack-handedness! I agree about the wheels - I tried to show movement but I think they are too dark to pick up enough highlights.

Thanks - how did you guess LOL!

Thanks, Sarah, Michelle and Jean. It was fun doing it. As my son grew older the layouts became larger and larger and more and more elaborate - by the time he left home we could hardly get into his room. He took most of his stuff with him but left this one for us to play with :D.

Well done Tracer. Thats a very good entry for this week, like the bluring, just about right.

Very nice and well composed photo of a nice realistic set, it fits the theme perfectly

Thank you - I am really struggling to keep up with all the threads.

Top notch stuff!

Interesting commentary, and slightly amusing to hear you crashed the trains...!

I also have not messed around with curtained flash (1st or 2nd) so kudos to you for having a go. It seems that you've seen what you wanted to achieve, then set out and achieved it. It's not always about getting a great capture. Learning the process is just as important.

To be honest, I think it's a fine shot, and you've created a nice memory there.

Ian.

Like the train shot, very fun.

The main thing about this 52lark is taking shots you wouldnt normally and learn from it, so you have the experience to go with the great shot.

Well done

Dan

This I really like, the train almost looks ghostlike, doesn't have a model feel to it at all, well done...Mick

Thank you, Ian and Dan. You are absolutely right that the 52s make you try things you would never think of otherwise. I find it such fun and great for learning, both from my own experiments and from seeing other folk's results.

Thank you, Mick. You should see some of his other layouts. I sometimes wonder about all these grown men so serious about their model railways, but at least it keeps them out of mischief. :D

Week 6 - "Present"

watch1585bsmall.jpg

The watch - a treasured gift,
its brave hands ordering the maelstrom of the day.

Inside, relentless wheels
cast present cares into the abyss
of an unforgetting past.

I hope that this fits the theme on three counts:
  • I gave this watch to my husband some years ago.
  • I've tried to indicate the association with present but fleeting moments.
  • I used my 'new' (s/h) macro lens which was a present to myself ;).

The lighting is a bit uneven but the best I can do for the moment - one anglepoise plus diffuser plus reflector, but shiny surfaces are always a problem. I wanted a long exposure to show the movement of the second hand.

If anyone says it is squint I shall scream - I have tried straightening it several times but the bottom straps is squiffy so it looks wrong whatever I do, and I don't really want to crop it :bang:. So I claim that it is a deliberate part of the composition, to represent the uncertainty of our lives.

Again I must thank my lovely supportive husband who took the back off his precious watch just so that I could photograph it.

nice interpretation of the theme, great lighting and love the blur of the second hand moving.. :)

I hadn't even realised it was a PS job until you thanked your hubby. Good movement on the second hand and the workings show through pretty well, although I'd perhaps like to see a little more. Lighting is tricky on these shiny surfaces so you've done well to limit the reflection.

Present is much better when you read the text, and then spot the excellent PP work you've done on it! I never noticed first time round. Good work.

Love speed too. Perfect shutter speed. Just enough to retain the detail and convey the speed

Sorry, catching up a bit thanks to my good ol' internet connection, or lack thereof, should I say:bang:

Speed - I think this a lovely shot. It looks very peaceful to me. I like the trees being out of focus and I think you have acheived just the right amount of motion blur.
Just a shame we only got to see a tiddly snippet of what looks to be a great, detailed layout. But then that'd require a different shot anyway, of course.

Present - nice 'n' sharp. I like the second hand movement. Hadn't even noticed the wonky strap until I read your text.
