Tracer's 52 for 2010 (part 1) - Wk 26 -"Beginnings"

Spot on.

I wouldn't have even dreamt of trying this without a sound trigger.

Well done.

How many tries did it take to get the composition right?

Andy

Very, very well done.

I actually contemplated doing something with party poppers for "present" week, but decided that it was all far too complicated and difficult . . . so you're far braver than me.

Colours and background work well, but it's the sheer perseverance with the timing that's impressed me the most.

Great shoot shot.

Brilliant take on theme and well done for persevering with it.

Black background really helps the colours stand out.

Well done

That's a clever bit of photography! Well done on getting the timing right, and a good take on the theme. I'm glad I didn't think of it, it sounds very complicated.:clap:

Jean
Thank you, Jean. The most difficult part was anchoring the popper so that it didn't fall off the stand when I pulled its string!

chracking shot for shoot! perfect timing! How do you know that 1/64th power is 1/50,000s?
Thank you, Peter. I read somewhere that the duration of my flashgun (SB600) is about 1/830, and extrapolated from there. However I have since had a look at the manual which says that the duration doesn't halve each time that you reduce power, and that at 1/64th power it fires at 1/25,000. Still fast enough, fortunately. I've emended my original post.

This is great and as I am a lover for colours:thumbs: fits the theme and very well taken, I wish I could do something like this.
Thank you, Nicki. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I sat the popper in a tap washer stuck on to a black music stand with double-sided tape. The camera was mounted diagonally on a tripod a few feet away, with the flashgun in the hot shoe, and I did it at night so that the very short flash froze the movement - and also gave a black background. With a cable release in one hand and the popper string in the other...BANG!

Dude, that rocks :D

As has been said already, lovely colours and the black background is spot on.

like the shot for shoot. Really good colours against the black and you caught it just at the right moment.

Excellent take and great timing too

Thank you, Rob, JL and John.

Spot on.

I wouldn't have even dreamt of trying this without a sound trigger.

Well done.

Andy
Thank you, Andy. Once I had stopped pulling the stand over it only took about 6 attempts, surprisingly. Sometimes the streamers exploded in tiny shreds, and the colours varied quite a bit - this was the best one.

Wow thats so cool!!!! Well done on a fantastic shot!

Thank you, Sarah, SarahL and Dan. It took longer to rig up the music stand for the popper than it did to get the picture. And I had to be very careful not to kick the tripod over while I was stumbling around in the dark with a torch.

Brilliant idea and execution.....I was contemplating something similar with a canon....but unfortunately I couldn't get one on Ebay in time ;)
Thank you, Sonia. My first idea had to do with catapults and light bulbs but I had second thoughts. :D

wow, perfect timing on that.. the vibrant colours really pop against the dark background..

As everyone's said you caught the perfect moment in this shot, very good.

I think if I'd tried it I would have had armed response out with the amount of "shots going off!

Thank you, Dave. I wondered whether the neighbours would come to investigate but fortunately they didn't take any notice.

Sorry for posting two images again. Originally I was hoping to do something with a single pawn on a chess board stretching away to infinity.....but I couldn't find the chess board :bang:.

Week 15: Single 1

single22331flshbkfltr.jpg

So here instead is a single bishop, who has zoomed too far and is mortified to find himself on the Trivial Pursuit board instead - quite beneath his dignity!
Taken with natural light from a window.

Single 2

single2226.jpg

This is my back-up shot, which needs even more explanation. In a piano, most of the notes have three strings, but as you move towards the bass, they reduce to two strings and finally just one string per note. Here are some of the bass single strings of a grand piano (not mine).
Taken with off-camera flash bounced off the inside of the lid.

It's No.1 for me.
I like the simplicity of the shot. It's a shame that you couldn't find the chess board, but I actually quite like the incongruity of the TP board instead.
The DoF is perfect for it and I like the classic B&W.

Version 2 is a very close second though.
An interesting shot, good colours and the lighting's worked well.

I prefer the 2nd version....

I love abstract "head scratchers" like that, I'm a (former) musician myself but I'd never have guessed that one! :shake: Good colours and a nice clean overall shot!

2 really good shots with good DOF. The 1st shot would have been the winner if you'd managed to find the chess board.

Shoot: Very clever shot. I love the colours against the black background. Excellent.

Single: I like both but marginally prefer the second. However, I would not have had any idea what the second one was. I love the colours and the lighting is spot on.

Well done with both weeks :clap::clap:

Jenny

Hmmmm, 1st ones a tad odd, I got it once I'd read your 'piece' but have to admit my first reaction to the picture was "Why is there a chess piece on a monopoly board?" Then I looked closer, decided I didn't get it. Having said that, I actually really like the composition and lighting.

2nd one is a winner, spot on theme, beautifuly lit, really deep colours and pin sharp. It's really very good (and I knew what I was looking at).

great lighting on the first shot.. doesn't really bother me its not on a chess board, the B+W of a checkerboard might have had more impact perhaps, but the focus for me is the bishop so not sure i'd have noticed it too much??

nice crisp shot for the second, would have had no idea what it was.. great light and colour.. the first one for me though :)

Love the lighting on shot 1. Not sure about the board though. I like the second shot as an abstract - I would never have guessed it was a piano.

How on earth do you have the chess pieces but not the board?
A clever idea and nicely list but wouldn't have figured out is was a TP board without you pointing out. Has got me thinking about how it would have looked with perhaps the king alone on the board with the opposition bearing down on him.

As seems to be often the case Sarah has said it all...(and probably far better) :)

Both images have there merits although the Bishop does look a bit out of place on the triv board. I prefer nr 2 though its an interesting shot and without the explanation i would have no idea what it is

Thank you, Chris and Sarah. I put the bishop on the TP board just to try out the lighting - I was still hoping to find the chess board (some hope!)

Thank you Darren - I only came across the chess set a few weeks ago!

Thank you, Rob. The first one was really a test shot for the lighting, as I still hoped to find the chess board... Well done for recognising the piano!

Still... catching... up....

Produce: Brilliant. Just brilliant. Love the abstract nature of the image with your PP. Just really really good. Nothing more to say on that one.

Quad: The cloisters are quite spectacular, and whilst the composition is spot on, the shot suffers (in my humble opinion!) for the big split in light/dark with the underexposed shadow areas and the very light daylight outside. It's not too underexposed in the shadowy areas but I wonder if an HDR style treatment might work. Even if it's just making 2 copies, boosting the exposure on one of them and masking/erasing to blend them together?

Shoot: Wow. What a great capture. How many poppers did you go through? Lovely colours and sharpness (looks OK to me)

Single: Really like this one too. Simple, and amusing. I'm left wondering why he's not on a chess board. Love the PP and the angle you've chosen for the shot. It works really well.

Ian.

The lighting on the first Single shot is excellent, highlighting his lordship without blowing him out! ;) The incongruity is fine, but I think you would have got more of a wow factor on a chess board, and I guess everytime you read that type of comment, you're banging your head on the wall. Sorry :)

The second one is excellent - an interesting photograph, well composed, beautifully lit and a good contrasting range of textures. The back story completes it - and I never realised how piano strings are arranged on a grand. Is it the same on an upright?

Jean

I like your second shot at single - I think it is a great shot - the lighting is really good and the detail is pin-sharp. The only negative is that it requires explanation to understand the reference to single, but it is a lovely image nonetheless!

Thank you, Ian, for all your kind comments. I'm really interested in your thoughts on the cloisters exposure. It is in fact two shots combined - I used auto bracketing with continuous drive so that even without a tripod they lined up. I tried balancing the exposure more, as you suggest, but I felt it just looked unnatural - these cloisters are really dark and gloomy, with the daylight making big contrast, and I wanted to preserve something of that.

It only took about six poppers - just as well or the neighbours might have been calling the police

Thank you, Jean. It would have been nice to have the chess board but I was so pleased to find the chess men - haven't seen them for years.

Yes, all pianos are strung like this, for acoustic reasons. But to take the same shot on an upright would have meant doing it at floor level and I'm getting too stiff for that.... I was lucky to get access to this very nice concert Steinway; it costs the sort of money that makes a D3x seem like chicken feed

Thank you, Phil. It's a bit obscure, I know, so I'm pleased folk like it.

A pair of very good shtos... It's a tough one, I think the out of place Bishop isn't quite right, although the bishop itself is spot on... Gonna go with the bass strings on the Grand... nicely lit, love the colours

I have a couple of ideas for this but no time to follow them up as I'm going away for the weekend. And I don't want to raid my archives unless I'm completely stuck, So, down to the museum today....

Week 16 - "Stare"

stare22843.jpg

This is a Soay sheep, a very primitive breed living wild on St Kilda. I'm afraid this pic is rather a cheat, but it is much easier to shoot a stuffed exhibit . It was a useful exercise in low-light togging but I hope to reshoot this subject sometime.

There is a priceless video of a couple of these sheep dealing with a dog here.

Nice one Tracer - good use of a stuffed subject. It reminds me a little of Hartley Hare from Pipkins (showing my age there!)

Nice shot! I love the DoF and framing of the sheep - and it definitely says stare to me!

Shoot: great shot, capturing the colour and action in this shot, would have drove me crazy trying this, well done ;)

Single: like the Bishop but not the board, maybe simply alone on a table would have been better, just seemed out of place

Stare: nice use of light and subject - would you really want to be that close to a REAL sheep with those horns!?

That's a great shot - simple and effective!

Phil

Thank you, Paul. I go back to Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men. :D

Thank you, Sarah

Nice shot. I didn't even realise at first that it was stuffed. Bang on theme, too.

Jenny
Thank you, Jenny - it does look realistic, doesn't it.

Thank you, Dade. I'm looking out for a chess board! And no, I wouldn't like to get too close to one of these - apparently they are quite tough!

That's a great shot - simple and effective!

Phil
Thank you, Phil
