I bought a "brand new" Canon lens at the show. Or so I was told and reassured by the middle age male salesman with grey hair.

I have just unpacked it and to my sheer horror it has a worn DEMO label and old style lens cap. Aside from it being not new, cashback could be invalid for it and it could be rather bashed. In short they totally and knowingly f***ed me. Tomorrow I am going out of my way back to the show to return it and submit a formal complaint.

I would suggest anyone buying from them to fully unpack and inspect your purchases. You'd rather find out before you bring it home. Be safe.

O dear - how distressing for you. I hope you get it sorted. I bought from them today; I suddenly decided I wanted to open the box to find out what filter size I needed and it was brand new. Let us know how you get on.

Amazing that, all my new stuff bought from Calumet has been spot on.

Yes I had a melt down on the Calumet stand, but everything was brand new and still sealed in plastic bags etc.

I did notice one stand was selling 'graded/reconditioned stock' which was clearly marked with labels as graded or reconditioned.

Not sure if this was Calumet or Camera World or someone else.

Some brilliant prices for Nikon stuff on that basis.

...or an ex-demo model accidentally got mixed up in the new boxes whilst they were packing/unpacking huge amounts of stuff for the show. It happens, stop being such a drama-lama, Calumet haven't built their reputation on deliberately ripping people off.

I'm sure they picked you out of the crowd as the one person they were going to "totally and knowingly f*** you"...
I'm sure you have made a mistake once in your life too.

Teach you to come on here and moan

It's a busy environment, staff don't even get much chance to grab a meal break. It's just a mix up that's all. It wasn't deliberate. No point having a major strop or rant annoying as it is. I would have let the dust settle and then posted it back with a covering letter (RSMD) and put in a phone call avoid any additional stress of revisiting the show plus the added expense of fuel etc.

Is it worth while going to the show to get savings on bags and lenses or not people? I have monday off and thought I may go up to the show.

This a thousand times over, I really annoys the hell out of me, people coming along and lambasting a company for making a mistake and doing so before you've even given them chance to make it right...

The OP came here to express there thoughts and feelings, very valid thoughts and feelings to them, about the experience they had

Given the above I am wondering why people feel the need to invalidate them?

Could at least give calumet a chance to sort the situation before going off on one. The internet doesn't do companies any favours sometimes!!!

Probably because he pretty much invalidated his own opinion by claiming they deliberately did it to him, when in truth he has/had no actual proof of that at the time of posting, nor has given them any chance to rectify. In the same way as so many people are suspicious of people registering to say good things about a particular company, posting a rant that could ultimately be bordering on libelous is similar poor form.

ETA: Please note I said 'could', as we don't know, OP hasn't been back to update on outcome.

I hear what you are saying Yvonne

The OP did also say though that he had clarified with the person who sold it to him that it was brand new, yet it turned out not to be hence the post

I just feel that sometimes, myself included, when we reply to people it can sometimes be in a negative & rude way and that invalidates what could be very real issues for a person

Not sure where it comes from but someone once said "There is a right way and a wrong way to respond to someone, just make sure you choose the right way"

It's just my observation based on a number of threads recently, I have no wish to offend anyone

Not sure I agree that it is happening generally, though I by no means ready every thread, lucky if I get chance to read a few percent tbh, so if you say that is the case, will take your word for it Keith. However, I do think in this particular instance, negativity breeds negativity. The OP could have been expressed the right way too, so hardly surprising if the replies are less than sympathetic and understanding really. Just imo of course. :)

Oh I don't mean generally, just on a few threads where I have taken a sharp intake of breath and thought "that's not nice"

Indeed it does seem that negativity breads negativity hence "There is a right way and a wrong way to respond to someone, just make sure you choose the right way"

I got a full refund. Apparently they knew they have several ex-demo lenses that aren't marked as such on the box and only took some effort (or promised me they would) after I escalated it to the manager. They offered to discount the lens by £50 but I declined due to possibility of cashback being invalid.

Too many people from OOF section here well and truly hate me and will take any opportunity to have a go at me. I have posted 100% true account of what happened and warned people to double check their purchase doesn't have demo stickers. How wrong could that be?

@daugirdas

Thank you for your opinion but feel free to keep it to yourself next time. I have no idea why you weren't on my ignore list already, hopefully it will work this time.

Is it worth while going to the show to get savings on bags and lenses or not people? I have monday off and thought I may go up to the show.

apparently they had good deals considering I attempted buying this one. Notably 5dIII, 6D, 7DII, 16-35 f/4, 24-70mm f/4, 100mm L, etc... Most deals were good simply due to double Canon cashback.

So your saying they were knowingly selling ex demo lenses as new and weren't keen to replace your lens initially?
Any recompense for having to return, pay parking, entry fee again?

Well and truly hate you......? That's a bit strong isn't. I've never seen any evidence to support that proposition, have you considered that you might be a little paranoid! "Calumet deliberately set out out to see you off, people hating you" I think you need to have a rethink and look at the world from a different perspective.

wonder what the outcome is ,the origonal post was sat p.m so logically the return should have been sunday ,wonder if they will re-imburse fuel.£10 parking ,£18 entry fee etc as well .would love to know

all i bought was a think tank belt reduced to £5 which i may or may not find a use for won't be taking it back though

Ah, excellent, so a result this time. Very glad you got it sorted and does sound from your description like Calumet buggered up a little.

However, a couple of points...
Too many people from OOF section here well and truly hate me and will take any opportunity to have a go at me

errr.. no  Don't elevate yourself to such emotion, neither I nor I imagine most people here know you well enough to consider the word hate to be applicable. Maybe if you balanced some of your many 'poor service' stories, with some 'excellent service' ones, folks would be more inclined to understand you.

I have posted 100% true account of what happened and warned people to double check their purchase doesn't have demo stickers. How wrong could that be?

Nope, totally disagree, to come on and rant the way you did with no proof of such was and will remain very poor form. I can absolutely and fully understand and agree to you coming on and warning people to check items bought at the show to ensure they are as described and explain that yours wasn't, albeit having bought stuff myself at the shows predecessor, Focus, it also strikes me that it's common sense to do so anyway, one shouldn't have to be told. It is a pain in the neck trip back if they are not. However the tone and words used were simply unacceptable in my book, you yourself operate as free lance photographer I believe, if a client ranted in same vein about you all over the internet without even having given you a chance to rectify it, you would be incredibly annoyed and/or upset about it I am sure - you would have to be a pretty thick skinned, emotion free soul not to be.

it's all very well berating the OP, but he is merely sharing the word.

I will add my word.

I also went (for the last time in my life) to Calumet to buy a body and lens.
I wasn't impressed the body only was a kit box with the lens removed, but I know that is a practice adopted.
However, while the sales guy struggled to find a carrier bag to for said kit box, I decided I had better check inside.

It seems that "body only" here mean LITERALLY that. I had a body. No battery. No charger. No leads, nada zip.
They fetched said missing parts when I pointed this out, but had I not checked, well, the OP here would have been a satisfied customer compared to me!

It's easy to say people make mistakes, but when you are dropping £2k of heard earned, well forgive me for wanting it to be right!

...no you havent. After dealing with Calumet myself for quite a few purchases, im pretty confident that they didnt single you out to deliberatey F*** you. Ive had nothing but good service from them.

If someone was considering buying from Calumet, and was searching the internet for reviews/recomendations/experiences etc, its quite possible that this thread would appear in the search results. Considering that this was an obvious mistake by Calumet, I think you are a bit out of order to be honest. At least (as others have said) give them that oportunity to rectify first, before spitting your dummy out.

So, now they HAVE recitfied. You have a new lens, an apology and the offer of a discount (which you declined). Sounds like a really good service to me.

Not sure Nick - Seems they turned up to the show flogging demo lenses as new, when caught out offered a discount on a used lens, but the buyer wanted new. It also sounded like they didn't care until the manager was called? Then we don't know as yet what the lens was or the cost, but add into that the price of another car parking, entrance, and the time to return to the show and OP is certainly out of pocket on the purchase.

Then the issues of CadTechy. Was this calumet shifting old stock? Ok if that's how it's sold, but it rather sounds like poor practice rather than an oversight or error?

Does that really sound like good service?

Rubbish. You posted groundless and potentially libellous accusations that they deliberately attempted to fob you off with a used demo lens in place of a new one. That's your opinion, based on zero actual facts, not a "100% true account of what happened".

No, not a single penny to compensate for my expenses. And I have mentioned that I went well out of my way to return that lens. Luckily I have trade badge so I didn't have to pay entry fee, but everything else obviously still applies.

So, now they HAVE recitfied. You have a new lens, an apology and the offer of a discount (which you declined). Sounds like a really good service to me.

What a load of rubbish. I have NO new lens, no old lens, nothing other than extra travel and parking expenses. That sounds like dreadful service to me. I have you on ignore now as well.

I paid them over £800 for 24-70mm f/4 with a hope of getting Canon cashback that would bring it to acceptable price. Since the lens wasn't new, it may have been registered before and cashback declined. That would be a horrible deal even with the extra £50 off.
And to be perfectly fair the guy on Saturday at first thought he didn't have any more stock then went to chat with a colleage and eventually turned up with that white box claiming all was 100% kosher, and very briefly showing the good part of the lens but quickly put it back to make sure it didn't get better look. Now you can see where that deliberate part comes in.

P.S. I have said everything I had to and I have no intention coming back to this thread. Several naughty members have way too much fun attacking me in every single thread and I am really fed up with this.

I obviously misread his second rant, so i do apologise, but...

...pity he wont see that really :D

soon the sinister plot will be unvieled where you deliberately conspired with calumet to 'f*** him' because you really hate him from out of focus ... or something (and "i would have got away with it if it wasnt for you pesky kids")

Dammit, you saw right through my (obviously not so sneeky) plan!!

"They well and truly f****d me"...

"too many people well and truly hate me" ...

Bit of a pattern occurring here??

As always, Raylan Givens has a saying about that (contains some NSFW language, Spanish subtitles and some appalling dubbing)

It is about time you clean up this s*** please. I posted this trying to be helpful but you lot just want to rip me to pieces for a good laugh. I am not OK with this and I hope you take my reports seriously enough. Thanks.
