TP 52'ers Class of 2016 Discussion thread Week 52 we made it! time to celebrate /( celebrations)

Right I need to get packing, I hope to do a few comments in the morning before I leave, if not it will be a HUGE catch-up when I return bye yaall

It's all go for some eh! Off on a weekend in the big smoke followed by a holiday ... Phew! tough going! Enjoy.

At the end of a day at the beach it's always a good idea for liberal application of After Sun - especially useful for those with scaly skin!
No problem with that, the scales are there to protect against the sun
Wearing budgie smugglers confuse people though as snakes have "Hemipenes" ( two penis's) :D

I was wondering when putting a photo up, that to make the theme more interesting could the location be added. I failed to do it myself with the boat at Nefyn and after putting the location in it reminded people of their holidays. There are a lot of photos with other beaches and no location added, pity. Just a thought:)
If you want to add a location, then thats fine, But as the saying goes, if it aint broke, don't fix it :)

Have fun Dean :)

Feeling quite chuffed that one of my photos has been selected for the final 12 in the Sussex Wildlife Trust's online calendar competition for the second year. It's just an online thing but seems to generate quite a lot of publicity for the trust in the local press which has to be a good thing. There are some lovely shots in it this year...in fact I'd probably not vote for mine! Must be all the good crit (or not @posiview ?!) I've been getting here :)

Oh Wow! Well done Emma - not surprised you are chuffed, deservedly so. Fingers crossed.

Congratulations, its very exciting, the photos are lovely. Would the vote be for the cover?

Thanks Shirley. The calendar is just online, so each month's picture can be downloaded as a screensaver on their site. They do it just to generate more publicity for the trust which I'm more than happy to support as they do such great work for the places I love to photograph. The vote is for a cash prize and I think the second prize is a small gift from their shop. Not the big time (!) but it's nice to be chosen out of a few hundred. My picture last year won, but it was a very lucky shot soon after getting my camera a couple of years ago and I don't think I've taken such a nice one since!

Well done Emma. I really need to start entering a few competitions outside the club ones I do already.

Oh and don't tell anyone but it's Thursday.........

Well done Emma

Indeed.

Often it's a s simple of explaining what you don't like about a photograph and making suggestions to improve said photograph.

Cheers.

Sorry for the delayed response, I haven't been getting alerts for new posts on this thread for some reason.

Anyway sometimes "making suggestions to improve said photograph" is perfectly valid e.g. things like missed dust spots and keystoning (unless these were intentional) but sometimes I find people "making suggestions to improve said photograph" are either suggesting I present a different photograph, or just make it look more "conventional" and IMHO that is not valid crit. Fine to say you don't like it, don't get it or whatever but I think crit should be of the presented photograph and not of a photograph you would like. I know I have been guilty of this but there has to be a basic assumption that the photographer cropped, framed, etc for a reason and saying "you should of shot wider" or "it's too dark" for example assumes you know more about the intent than the photographer. OTOH saying "I find the crop too tight" or "I am not convinced by the exposure" would be valid IMO. I also think, at this stage in the year, we know where people are at, what their preferences and capabilities are and crit should take that into account. Let’s say I have posted plenty of in focus shots through the year and then I post one that is “soft”, again I think saying “it’s soft” is not valid crit because there has to be an assumption that I know how to focus and have posted this photograph for a reason.

And the poster explaining why they like it too.
I like to let the images standalone and see what people think. If it was hung on a wall people would see the image before they read the blurb and I like to understand what it is about an image that people see before I influence their thinking

Crits should be offered in the spirit of helpfulness and to be encouraging. They are crucial to learning and development but can quite easily prove counter-productive if expressed without balance and sensitivity. By all means express what you don't particularly like but balance that view with what you do.

Talking of crit, @Cobra will be in for some if he doesn't get off the beach and get a theme posted :D
He is abroad isn't he? Just thinking, cobras are quarantined upon entry to the UK so we may be in for a looong wait.

For me personally receiving crit is a really important part of the 52. I have learned so much from people taking the time to share their feelings, positive or negative, about the photos I've posted and an equal amount by thinking carefully about everyone else's. I've definitely never looked at white balance in the same way since a couple of my early shots...but I still stand by the orange tones of the first! Other people's insights are so invaluable, even if I disagree with them, or can't do much with the shot as it's been taken - it's always at the back of my mind next time I'm out and I can make that decision as to whether to follow that advice or not. It definitely feels more supportive to receive criticism along the 'in my humble opinion' lines and I'm sorry if I've forgotten that at times, but it certainly hasn't been hard to be overwhelmingly positive as everyone taking part has taken truly inspiring shots that I might never have had the creativity, talent, opportunity or imagination to take myself. So on that note...looks like Friday is the new Friday? *sigh*

no Cobra post, damn, does that mean I haven't missed the theme... b****r I was hoping to get my shot today, tomorrow is my last full day here and must take it before I go, otherwise will be miles.behind again :(

ooo and thanks all for the holiday wishes, its fab here

Darn it, darn it, darn it he has the bag with him, so we can't even pull one out for ourselves, we'er stuffed.(we'er) doesn't look right.

It could be worse, you could be on a TP and realised you've forgotten your tripod

Oh now that's not good but ut could be worse then that you could of forgotten you memory cards (I've never done this but now of a few who have!!!)
