TP 52'ers Class of 2016 Discussion thread Week 52 we made it! time to celebrate /( celebrations)

That there are :naughty:

I'm thinking of relegating people once they get 6 themes behind, they can always be moved back up if they post a few.... with this in mind there are two or three in danger of dropping next week... @davys - @drounding - @Manxmaid - @PSPDan - @Sniggle

I'm not going to ask !!!

I'm on it this week. I won't let you down, promise!

So do we differentiate between those doing the "true 52" and those doing a "modified" version? ;)

IMO As long as you get your 52 images posted for the year then you've done the 52 for 20XX.
It's a personal challenge not a competition so I'm a bit nonplussed with all the posts effectively trying to single out those who can't complete the post every week as effectively second class participants.

I appreciate this is only my second year, but I don't recall this being flagged as an issue last year... Now where are my climbing ropes???? I see a molehill over there. ;)

I feel the same way as LC2, I think not commenting on anyone's threads to be a bigger issue

Is this just commenting....or critique. ... as I suffer heavy doses of foot in mouth when I comment... my lady Dr recommended dark rooms and episodes of How I met your mother frequently...

I prefer critique to be honest. What you'd have done, suggestions of alternative POV, style of shot or suggested PP are all welcome.

If it's crap, I'd rather someone told me (in their opinion of course).

I have tbh I was leaving it until a few months in..let ppl get a good few images behind them then dive in with a bit of feedback here and there

You're more considerate than me haha. If I have a suggestion / critique of a shot I've come out with it generally speaking.

If I haven't, it's only because I don't have anything to add to it! (Not uncommon)

I enjoy commenting and critiquing and I'll be honest, I tend to be a bit harsher on those who are clearly good photographers and/or experienced! I think it's about moderating your critique to be of benefit to the person taking the photo. Saying, "lovely shot" when it's clearly not is probably less helpful than not even commenting! (Bearing in mind we all see different things in photos and what one person likes another might not). If I think a shot could be improved by doing something differently, I'll usually suggest it - in a gentle way if I don't know that person from last year's 52. Of course, if it's @Dark Knight or @posiview etc. then it's open season ;) Being overly critical of someone who's new to photography is just as likely to put some off, so personally I think most of us try to avoid that. Time is tight though, so if it is genuinely a good shot then clicking Like or posting, "great image" is totally fine. Especially if you can't think how to improve it...

There are one or two here though who are new to photography but whose images are really very, very good - I'm suitably impressed!

I don't believe there is much in the way of critique from anyone, lifes too short, but the reason why this part of the forum works is because everyone encourages everyone else, joining in for me is a big part of that, don't get me wrong I am quite happy to ignore those that don't bother, it just seems odd not to join in.
I am not sure any of this applies to you in your parallel universe though, I enjoy just reading your posts.

I try my level best to give constructive criticism. Totally agree saying 'good shot; when it's not is less than helpful.

I sometimes sense there maybe a bit of, 'if I criticise his/her photograph, they might do the same to mine'. I've posted several times that we should all comment on the good and bad, and also suggested improvements.

Time is, as you say, tight, especially in the early weeks.

Cheers.

As above, but there is a real sense of community in here.

And that I think is the crux of it (y)

Yup :)

It doesn't bother me when people post their pictures but I do tend to base my comments on the perceived level of the photographer in the early part of the year. For those of us who have being doing this for a while I'm a bit more upfront with my critque if I think there is a need based on my experience and, of course, taste. It will always be subjective. In the early weeks I feel overwhelmed by the volume of photos appearing and struggle to comment, especially as by the time I feel up to it it's already been said. Good photo or fits the theme, for me, is pointless as it doesn't tell me anything and I don't like using it without any justification.

If people would rather post an archive image instead of taking a new photograph they will ultimately get less out of the challenge. I often have an archive image that imo is better than my submission for a particular theme but that kind of self assessment is useful because it makes me think why i think image a is better than image b and I'm regularly surprised and how well my 'inferior' image is received.

Do the 52 whichever way you want to, but, remember, like the rest of life, you only get back what you put into it.

This ^^

Despite the fact I've found myself doing just that :)

As someone who has completed a few 52's in the past and continues to lurk in this part of the forum, I thought I'd chip in my twopenneth worth. :)
This is a perennial discussion, to critique/comment or not, to use an archive shot or a joker etc but I think it doesn't really matter.
The 52 forum thrives in spite of any perceived 'problems'. It is IMHO, the most community spirited part of the TP wider forum, I don't think there is any other sub forum that can touch it for encouragement, friendliness and support.
2016 52 will find its own level, and there is always that diehard core of people who will be here come December in readiness for 2017.
From a lurker, long may it continue:D

It does tell you that someone looked at your photo. I often struggle to come up with anything meaningful to say about a photo but like to at least reciprocate comments so often have to resort to those kind of platitudes. And let's be honest, getting some feedback is better than none, I've posted a few things on here in other sections and got absolutely no comments which I suppose tells you something about the photo (i,e. it is banal and mediocre) but gives no hint as to what needs changing to get people to engage. At least with a 52, amongst the platitudes are often some nuggets that give an insight as to what people actually think of a photo.

I do like to give initial feedback by LIKEing a photo. ...like I said though..I'll give it a few weeks then start seeing about comments.. not every image..not every week.. .but where I feel I can add to what hasn't be said already..

BTW. ..I do like it in the area of the forum...always have.... even if I am in a parallel universe/forum :D :D :D :D :D :D (y)

I've been struggling to keep up with the commenting these last few weeks so if I get time to comment it will usually be along the lines of nice photo fits the theme etc., I do try to I've better crit if I can but work is manic, and after spend a day working on the Health & Safety stuff for work I don't really want to be staring at the computer screen for too long on an evening.

With regard to people posting archive images I have done it twice so far this year, why? because they were what I considered to be good images that fitted the themes and to avoid getting to far behind. One of the images was a shot I planned to reshoot anyway but as they are working around the area on the roads etc. I cannot get near the building to get a decent photo

good photo = good photo
fits the theme = fits the theme, crap photo but I'd rather not say so in so many words.

:D

I agree but "crap" is a bit strong perhaps? Often unremarkable or not something that interests me. I find this fairly often and I'm sure people find this with my photos, they are technically well executed (not mine, other people's) and present a suitable image, far from crap but just do nothing for me.

Whadda ya mean if ? :p

*#&÷&€×_+£$*$&$....snake!!!!!!!! I'll have u know we have free electricity over here.....yeaeeehhh!! Cos we keep the portal open to ur universe...... {stealing ur solar power} ....like a boss!!

Just checking all my comments from you @d00d :bat::D

I think it's really a case of 'if it ain't broke ....don't fix it' this is my third year and I love the 52's. The 'no rules' approach seems to work really well, it is after all a personal challenge and I think it's up to everyone to approach it in a way that suits them best.

I guess it's the same with critique/comments some can give the technical, others are more into the visual aspect. Hopefully both are as valid because I'm rubbish at the technical :) I do think that even if you can't do loads of comments that it's polite to acknowledge that you've bothered to read comments made on your own submission with a quick 'like' or a 'thanks everyone'.

It's a little oasis of calm in here away from the main forum ....I hope it stays that way :)

I fully intend it to stay that way too

So do we differentiate between those doing the "true 52" and those doing a "modified" version? ;)
In a word - No

In the last few 3 or 4 years the 52 has, I'd say 'matured', people set their own rules at the start of the year and take the challenge with the ups and downs that present to them.

We have had dozens of discussions on here, in separate threads and at forum meets, I think it was pretty unanimous every time it was discussed that being strict to 'photo must be taken in the week', would mean that only @posiview would be the only one left in it each year :D

Seriously it keeps things lighthearted, interesting, the 52 croud very active, and most of all.... FUN

At least he'd have plenty of opportunity to comment on his own photos come Christmas time though :p (seeing at there would only be his photo posted!)

Just checked the spreadsheet and I think @Dark Knight has finally lost the plot.......

Unless it's true he's from an alternative universe :D

Thursday 14th of February

It is Thursday the 14th over here...... but then I get a nice view of Dawn of time....until she closed the bedroom curtains....

:) I've only made a handful of posts outside of this sub forum and to be honest for the moment I'm pretty happy hiding in here! It's one of the friendliest and most easy-going forums I've ever posted in and I'm very glad I signed up.

Obviously if I could I'd still ban everyone...
