TP 52'ers Class of 2016 Discussion thread Week 52 we made it! time to celebrate /( celebrations)

Snowboard......Gopro headcam from the top for me...you'll be forgiven for posting video :)

Well apart from not snowboarding and not having a gopro, I'd be a bit up for that :) Here was me on the way up to the summit on Wednesday...

Are more people than ever not doing a proper 52 week challenge, by that I mean take a new photo each week?
Last time I did this challenge I seem to recall nearly everyone sticking to that regime, but it doesn't seem to be so now....
Was it a gradual decline or...

I think for most of us either (a) life gets in the way a bit or (b) we'd rather take the best shot we can to fit a theme rather than posting one for the sake of it, perhaps even a combination of the two.

Love it. I had a few tours in Norway when I was in the army and went skiing in France a few years ago....LOVED skiing :)

Bottom line, Jeff, is that there are no rules. ISWYM, though.

Cheers.

But that's why it's such an achievement to stick with it....
Guess I'm just surprised how it compares to the last time.

I'll be honest Jeff and say for me, getting what I consider to be a rubbish shot in for the sake of making a somewhat arbitrary deadline ranks behind getting a slightly better shot in when I'm able to take it.

As with a lot, having family, work and other hobbies means photography needs to fit in. In a funny kind of way, the TP52 is good in that it gives me a bit of structure, but as with everything in life: it's all about moderation. Too much structure - for me - in this challenge will mean I get less out of it than I might by flexing things to suit the rest of my life (and frankly, some quite important things!!)

But as Andy says, there are no rules! Only those you make yourself...

To me it seems that this years intake have taken a different approach, which is their prerogative. I have to be honest and say I'm finding it less engaging when people regularly get behind and then post catch ups.

I've regularly said, I only comment on submissions posted in the current weeks (unless they really appeal to me). I appreciate...work...family...other stuff gets on the way...but time is precious :)

Not blowing my own trumpet but I'm doing 2 x 52's and a 365 right now...and is life getting in my way...YEP... big time... both work and home... maybe it's what's driving me on idk ...but it's a decision I've made and one that's biting me even this early into it, I'm used to chunks being taken out though..

will I post a ... duff shot....of course I will.. because I know I'll look back and say how I could improve, take it on the chin? even...imo the 52 is about that week..I got behind in my first 52 so I know it can be a struggle though..

I'll have a look. Why not update your signature with links. Shame your SP thread (in ya link) no longer has photographs, I enjoyed them :)

Cheers.

What was the participation rate like last few yrs? Is it like poty comp... change the rules and a few more might just consider entering?

I don't know what it was like before but looking at the thread at any given point in time, you'd be hard pressed to know what the current theme was. There are of course other, more important things in life but the timing does seem like a fundamental part of the challenge.

There are no rules :) Well, I guess posting photographs is a kind of rule :)

I'm sure @Dark Knight did some totting up to show entry numbers over the years

But this is what I'm trying to say Mr p .. that by sticking TO the week you are all on the same page... that's what it felt when I did the 52... my first shots...I'm embarrassed about them..but in a funny way..

I need to get up as I know a dangerous shot to get and need a very long lens and a clear line of sight...that's if they're playing today :D

(Y) ...... ELSE why use the word challenge ? .... challenge yourself everyone!! I know I get foot in mouth a lot so I know this could eek some ppl...

imo ... there should be a rule ....

If you fall behind shoot & post the current theme before playing catch up.

:bat:

I've fallen behind twice now and will be posting dangerous as well as camouflage this weekend to catch up.

It even irks me that I've done this so I get where you're coming from and like Mr Posiview does, I'll generally only comment on the submissions from that particular week.

A one year old that doesn't sleep is challenging me enough as it is!

Interesting idea susie. Perhaps the title of the main thread could be updated every week to remind ppl what week we're on.

I posted my wk 5 on a Thursday morning about three minutes after the wk 6 theme was announce ... that sort of slack behaviour can be overlooked due to the unpredictability of chief theme puller.

I think your ideas @susiejb and @d00d are great. Main photo thread is only for "on week" pics although perhaps you could post a link only (no pics) to any prior week catch ups, so that DK can still easily update his spreadsheet?

FWIW, I was without internet access from Wed until Fri so even though I shot Camouflage on Thu morning, I wasn't able to upload... my bad though!

Maybe we could keep the main thread for this weeks topic only .....you could post your catch up shots on your own thread and then comments could be added when commenting on this weeks theme.

I was going to suggest this but thought it was coming on a bit strong for a newbie!

Themes could be announced on Thursday and the main thread open for contributions from the Saturday.

I like @susiejb and @d00d d 's ideas, too - it might make the thread less disjointed. I have to say I'm really enjoying the time-limited challenge so far - if I know I'm only going to have half an hour that week it's made me really think what's achievable and forced me to take shots out of my comfort zone - occasionally they might even come off! That said, it wouldn't be much of a 52 if no-one took part due to too many rules and inflexibility - it's good that there's room for people to approach it in their own way. Of course I'm saying this on Sauturday with not a clue about what to shoot for dangerous and time ticking...

Thats not a bad idea TBH

Also not a bad idea :)
I could change the rules to suit that but it maybe a bit late to do that.
I think its certainly one for next year though.

I can do that its not a problem

Ah but due to my work patten recently, for the last few weeks its been a Thursday lunch / early PM time

....but that could hopefully be easily sorted by Cobra :) anyway it's just a thought as I noticed it was being discussed.
Pull theme, update the list of themes, alter thread titles in conversion, update my own 52 title

Say what you like Nick

Locking it and re-opening it, would probably cause more problems that it would solve TBH.

I didn't mean lock it. Should have said "Postings related to the latest theme are welcomed from Saturday". It removes from you any obligation to announce the theme at an exact time.

Nice idea Nick, but I think people will continue to post regardless TBH

In which case we simply BAN THEM!

Never make me a mod, BTW.

I don't think we should confuse posting weekly with taking the themed image within the week.

I don't care if someone doesn't post their images for a month as long as the ones they do post were taken in each 7 day window.

And if they weren't then BAN THEM!

Make me an admin, I'll BAN HIM.

Make me an admin, I'll BAN HIM.
Oh no, he's useful to keep around, when people get out of hand, we unleash him, before feeding him!

you can do it ...it's called multitasking ....women do it all the time :D :exit:
Multi tasking I can do, but I thought slavery had been abolished?

:D

I'm one of the slack ones who post late. :P But I only do it because many people do it and the mods keep saying there are no rules.

Usually, I'm a stickler for rules and I do like the idea of a 52 having a strict one-week deadline. At the same time, I also appreciate having the extra time to get a better photo especially since this is my first 52 and I've owned a DSLR all of one month.

Having said all that, I actually AM working on posting all my themes within the week, just because it's a good challenge. Am pleased to say I've just managed to work off all my backlog and have only the current theme to work on now.

Which is all a td;lr way of saying I'm happy with stricter rules, or not, whatever you guys want. Which means I probably wasted all your time reading all the nothing I just wrote. :exit:
