Toying with moving from a 7d to a 5D MK3

Currently have a 7d but am toying with getting a 5d MK3. Now, I mostly shoot moving objects & have had some great results from the 7d coupled with either a 70-200 f4L or the 100-400L. I also use a 10-22mm for static shots. I realise that the 10-22 couldn't be used on the 5d MK3. My walkaround lens is a 24-105L. I also have a 50mm f1.4.
I am finding low light shooting quite difficult & am having to use quite high ISO levels (1000 +) in some circumstances. This is producing quite a lot of noise but Lightroom seems to be doing a good job of minimising this in PP.
Have always fancied a 5D MK3 and am curious of FF. But, would it suit my style??
Have also toyed with swapping my 70-200f4L for a 70-200f2.8 MK2 for faster shooting in low light coupled with my 7D.
Here are a few pics of what I mainly shoot currently with the 7d. All advice is greatly received.

From the above shots, I don't see that you need the upgrade.

I'm sure you know the 10-22 won't fit a Mk3 either, so the widest you'll have is 24mm, as opposed to 16mm equivalent.

Personally I'd spend the money on the 70-200 2.8 as you'll get the extra speed without bumping the ISO, and for shots of birds, on FF you'll lose a fair bit of reach which you might find frustrating.

Nice shots by the way.
 
I think that the reach will be the only thing you'll miss, could always pop a 1.4 or 2 x on though, and crop on top with much much less noise:cool:

I think once you have shot with the 5D3, you probably won't want to go back:nuts:

In what way will the 5D give me the "wow" factor over my current 7D in the above situations?

Effortless image quality. Sharper, brighter, less noise, and more dynamic range particularly in the shadow areas with better tone separation and cleaner colours.

It's the way the larger sensor format allows lenses to perform better (basically better MTF performance) and more light collected.

You will miss the 7D's pixel-reach but in addition to comments above, if you're into shallow depth of field, changing to the 70-200/2.8 will gain you an extra two stops of shallow DoF-ness (compared to f/4 on the 7D).

Keep the 7D if you can, at least until you've had some time with the 5D3. One man's 'blows it out of the water' is another man's 'a bit better if you look closely' ;)

Hi,

I had a 7D for a few weeks and hated it, the 5D Mark III I bought blew it away in my opinion. If you don't need the reach the high ISO on the Mark III is superb and miles better than the 7D I owned. I liked everything about the Mark III and only reason I got rid was I was needing the cash for a holiday. I will buy another once I can afford it again.

I'd rather pay £1800 for a new Mark III than £600 for a used 7D :)

I think to answer your original question Kev, I dont think you will improve the images above with the change in body. All the other points mentioned with ref to Crop Factor/Reach etc are all important factors to consider.

If you can keep the 7D during the transition to the 5D3, I think you will be able to make your own mind up.
 
The 5D3 will blow the low light problems you, and a lot of others including me, are having at the minute. I can shoot up to ISO5000 and still get better photos than I could with the 7D at 1000. I recently swapped my 7D for a 70D and that blows away the 7D I had in low light as well. Although the 70D is excellent in regards to IQ it still wont get as much use as the 5D3 which is a brilliant camera overall.

I really like the 7D & think it is a fantastic camera once you have mastered it which I think I have?? I am very happy with the IQ of the 7D & love the AF when used with decent lenses. I am becoming curious of Gig Photography now (I used to be a professional musician) this is why I am toying with the 5D MK3.
Question, Is the AF on the 5D as fast & as accurate as the 7D's?
 
Better in my opinion. As others have pointed out too, the Higher ISO/Low noise on the 5D3 is very good. For gig work, the 5D3 will wipe the floor with the 7D.

I do gig photography, and I upgraded from a 7D to a 5D3 earlier this year.

The performance of the 5D3 is utterly superb. It is about so much more that just high ISO noise. The improved dynamic range is very handy but what I really love is the smooth tones even leading into the blown out areas of stage lighting.

I don't just do live music, any I have found almost every other area of my photography has seen improvements in the output now that I have learned how to benefit from full frame.

Saved for reference. House sale is going through so not long now hopefully. Should I keep 7d? Love it to bits & can get it to work well. Did some shots today in terrible light. (ISO 2000) but still managed to save them via Lightroom. May keep & have the best of both worlds????

I moved from a 7d to a 5d mk3 only recently, had the 5d mk3 a week now and im blown away by it, its high iso capabilities are amazingly good. I also got mine from hdew cameras and they are fantastic to deal with.

I dont know. I would assume so. All I do know is they are another UK based grey import company with a UK landline and when I called them they seemed quite knowledgeable and helpful. Also answered any questions I had openly and honestly when I asked about the grey import stuff.

Well, their web site says:

which conveniently overlooks the obligation to pay import duty and VAT.

So they're just like all the others, really.

But only if you make your living taking photos - if you don't, which is most of us, it doesn't matter.

Anyway, after reading this thread I need to junk my 7D. :'(
 
Still toying but am really enjoying the 7D at the moment as I seem to have nailed it. :) Took some pics this Sunday at ISO 6400 & managed to rescue them (I think). Yes, They were extremely noisy to start with but Lightroom sorted it.
This is the 7D at 6400. Can someone please post a pic taken with the 5D at 6400 so I can have a look.
