Anyone watching?

It's an opening day Sprint stage which will suit Cavendish if he still has the legs to get past Greipel and Kittel.

I'm back in the uk tomorrow and already have the ITV4 highlights show in my planner. Love Le Tour!

7.00pm ITV 4 set on the PVR for the next 3 weeks :D

Didn't expect that from Cavendish, thought Kittel had the measure of him these days. Hope Contador recovers quickly, need all the top contenders to stay the distance to make it exciting at the top of the GC

Love the tour on TV but miss Liggit and Sherwen commentary. As a friend said to me a few years ago, after standing in the rain waiting for an hour the bikes were past in a minute or so "Hmm not much of a spectator sport is it":)

Wow first year in how many without their commentary being used in the uk? I'll miss them.

David Miller is a very boring commentator, miss the usual two and doesn't seem to be so many shots of the weird and wonderful art/displays in roadside fields

That sort of thing shouldn't change, it's still the same company producing the show, they just haven't bought the world feed commentary.

I agree, but their is a definite lack of scenic shots this year, all part and parcel of the race for me.

Not looking good for Contador, bashed up and already losing time after just two stages, looking like it could be a two man race

I'm so old/sad I miss David Duffield's commentaries on Eurosport:(

David sadly passed away early this year- R.I.P.

Another flat sprinters stage today but the finish is a bit fiddly so there may be an upset.

I am enjoying it, Cav maxed it on the first to get a win as I think he may bail early to save himself for Rio.
I give him 10 stages, sad for the leader of stage 2 got caught before the line but enjoyed Sagan for the win, he is a wackjob.

Wow - one of the closest finishes ever!

After 222Km it's won by 22mm

So not only have we lost Ligget and Sherwin, I just noticed that PMU no longer sponsor the sprints/green jersey.

Todays stage looks epic, great finish with hills.
looking forward to the catch up @ 7pm

Heroic performance from Greg Van Avermaet giving him a 5min lead on General Classification -- the peleton allowed too big a gap, then chased too hard and ran out of domestiques to close the gap on the final two climbs.

Chapeau.

yes an amazing last 30kms he barely gave up 1 second on the chase group.
did you see the BMC car behind at the tape boy they were happy.

Love the tour on TV but miss Liggit and Sherwen commentary.

I hated their commentary (mainly for the fact that they were kissing Armstrongs ass so much they were half way up his colon) so much I signed up for Eurosport back in the days of Duffers - back when he was accompanied by King Kelly - but before Sean had worked out that if he was asked a question by Duffers a nod or a shake of the head wasn't an appropriate response for the listeners...

Duffers went, Harmon Arrived (not bad, but I missed the Duffers "Stories" and strange sayings (It's all gone a bit dark over Ted's Mothers, Turn your Granny to the Wall, Came a Box of Tricks - et.al. - just like listening to my Grandad commentating really)

Harmon went, Carlton Kirby Arrived - I know some don't like him, he does ramble on a bit, but it's my kind of rambling - I like him, and now, Sean's got a little less taciturn - to the point of actually cracking jokes and occasionally winding Kirby up on air - it's a pretty damned good combination - especially with Greg Lemond putting in his two-pennorth here and there.

Okay, the advert breaks on Eurosport are a bit "thick and fast" at times - they generally "get them over with" early in the coverage so that the final 30-40 minutes will be uninterrupted - but, as I watch the "live coverage show" on Sky+, but probably about a hour late starting, I just zapp forward through the ads and generally at the end of 3 hours viewing, I'm within 5 minutes or so of the actual "live" end of the broadcast.

I did watch the odd bit of ITV4's coverage of some of the racing earlier in the year - Millar seem to be doing the same role as Kelly on eurosport - he's not really there for the "local colour" as much as for the "insiders eye on the peloton" - more Pundit than Presenter - but he needs someone interesting to be the Presenter side of things - Who's doing that ? Ned Boulting ??

That was a great stage to watch yesterday. I wondered if there were fewer snippets of information about the areas they were passing through because I was watching it in the afternoon rather than the highlights in the evening. I too will miss those pieces.

Dave

Yesterdays route brought back a few memories as a small group of us (on motorbikes) had a brew and a bite at the cafe on Puy Mary back in 2004 and then stopped on the descent to watch hang gliders.
The road back then had TDF messages and riders names on.

Yeah they did like Armstrong but he had a pretty amazing record on the tour, helped a bit by the drugs and forcing his team mates to take them in order to enhance their performance in order to better support him. I know Armstrong was a tyrant even to his team mates - maybe mates is not the right word here- and a b**** in general but still liked Liggit and Sherwen - do they say much about Armstrong now I wonder. We have BT broadband with the sport thingy so can get Eurosport on that but find their coverage same as ITV4 not as relaxed as Liggit and Sherwen.

I seem to remember they wrote him off a couple of years ago, when Greipel, Kittel and Degenkold came on the scene.
Now the lad from "Manxland" has won more TdF stages than anyone but the Cannibal.

Cav chalks another one up.
that one looked hard tho, had to go from a long way out.

Skoda tdf app on android is really good with only occasional hiccup if away from the t.v.

Wow - descending of the like not seen before by a big hitter and one of the best stage wins ever!

Quite a stage yesterday what a mad decent 'a bit of fun' as deccribed by Frome! I too miss Duffers in spite of his drawbacks and rambling. Carlton's OK but should have the mic removed for the last 1k of every race and also his seemingly lack of knowledge of zoom lenses when commenting on the nearness of camera bikes. But then I'm still enjoying it as always.

Well done Froome !

Stage 4 passed close to home so we took the opportunity to park our deckchairs in the sun and see the show. "The Caravan" travels along the route about 90 minutes ahead of the race and consists of some weird and wonderful automotive constructions bedecked with girls throwing out samples of whatever they're advertising...surprising how how fast a French granny can run when competing for a free baseball cap or themed keyring!

There's a slideshow of images here for anyone interested in the bits that TV doesn't bother to cover..... Tour de France 2016-Stage 4

Great fun isn't it! I went to see it when it passed through Kent a few years ago.

Thanks for the great photos Bob, wondered what the Tour caravan was like, must make the effort to get over and see for myself.

Atrocious weather at the finish yesterday, strange that Quintana didn't attack, reckon he has one stage targeted for a move like Alpe d'Huez last year

I also though it strange that Froome wanted to take control at the end of week 1. There's still a lot of this race left. It's going to be interesting!
