I shot yesterday onto 4gig cards with the the 1Ds mk2.
(Aproximately 250 RAW files at around 14/15mb each).
I load the cards on to my 40 gig, remote, storage facility ("GIGAOne").... so far, so good .... :)

Today, I try to copy the files from the storage device onto a DVD .... firstly, i use "Nero" to create a copy DVD of the files (hoping to fill about half of the capacity of the 4.7gig DVD) .... failed !
I copy direct from store to "my documents" ... all ok. I try to copy from "my docs" to DVD using "nero" but I can only copy between 10 & 30% before the whole pc freezes up .... :shake:

i) Am i trying to transfer too much data at any one time ?
ii) How do you yourselves create a RAW, untouched and "as shot", DVD ?
iii) Is there an alternative to "Nero" ?

Sorry to bother you guys, but i've wasted a whole day today .... :'(

Any other associated help or tips would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks in anticipation.
cheers, david

Have you burned DVD media Ok in the past? What spec is the computer - old and slow or a recent purchase?

At a guess there is something slowing your system down and it can't read from the hard drive fast enough to keep up with writing the DVD. Bit hard to tell from what you have said so far.

Can't help with the Raw and nero side of things, but are you sure the dvd drive can handle the discs your using?

the specs for my laptops dvd writer said +/- discs, but when ever I use -R discs it behaves in a similar way to yours, it either fails to burn the full disc, or it'll freeze up the lappy when I open the disc to view the files.

Strangely, looking at the logos on the dvd drive it only mentions DVD +rewritable but properties for the device say +/-
works ok on + discs though.

How much space is left on your C drive and where is your swapfile situated?

thanks chaps,
i removed nero a few months ago as i felt it was not working efficiently .... i could'nt then get the windows download to work ... i felt that nero was "blocking" the operation of the windows copying facility.

I have naively discovered today, that i cannot copy files to my external dvd writer, without third party help. Hence the need to reload nero today. Just a free trial version took nearly an hour to download on both machines .... this is surely not right ?

I have looked at Nero 7 roma tonight ... is this the way to go ?

I have XP Pro on both desktop and laptop.

Where do i look to find out where my swapfile is .... actually, what is a swapfile ? .... I have 54.3g of free space on my C drive, and much more on the laptop.
(did i tell you i was thick ?)

I seem to remember an issue i once had with th +/- thing on discs .... could you please explain further (i am old and becoming senile, i think .... :cuckoo: ).
On the new, high spec laptop i only have a CD re-writer and DVD player.
I have a remote CD re-writer & DVD R/RW, which i use with both machines.
On the desktop, i have a CD re-writer and DVD player only, as per the laptop.

many thanks, once again, d

edit: i have a LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-16355 USB device (whatever that means) and i am using CD-R (no problems) and DVD-R discs.

Ok with 54Gb free you don't need to worry about the swapfile but If you have another hard drive (like D:) move the file to a folder on it before trying to write them to DVD. I think part of the reason it's slowing down is that Nero makes a working copy of each file before writing it to the disk and if it's trying to read from C write to C an then write to DVD it might be a bottleneck.

I'm quite a fan of Nero, it's cheap to buy and has a million features. I get the feeling that you are maybe dragging and dropping files onto your DVD drive to get them there? the best way to make a DVD is to run Nero Burning Rom and go through the routine of creating a dvd from scratch using the file menu system within the program to choose the files you want to copy over.

don't think nero can deal with raw unless your burning a data dvd

thanks steep,

i have loaded an old version (5) of nero, but it's not too good.

i shall buy and load nero 7, download from GIGAone to C: drive, and then try to create the DVD .... should the DVD-R discs be ok/compatible ?

anyone any ideas where to buy nero 7 (quickly) ?

thanks again for your help.

cheers, d

i have been trying to burn data DVDs ... with the emphasis on trying.
many thanks, d

If you're going to create a DVD, I'd advise you copy the files onto your hard disk first. Then write the DVD. If you try and write the DVD directly from the card, you may cause problems for yourself...

A308 MAN, http://www.nero.com/eng/index.html download it and try it first (be warned the download is 190+mb) then pay for it if it works for you. $60 = about £30 for the full package.

Have you recorded anything else other than your raw files onto these disks?

Try slowing the speed of the copying down in Nero. If you do not have a Buffer underun protection on your dvd recorder it will go too fast for your pc to keep up.

It may also be down to the disks you are using. Buying cheap disks is not always a good idea. Most recorders are dual compatable now though.
Use some other brand of disks so you can see if the originals are at fault.

I would try slowing down the speed of the recording first if I were you.

Let us know how you get on.

sorted ..... WHOOOOPPEEEEEEE !!!! :D

many thanks to you all.
i removed all old traces of nero in the registry, loaded the DeepBurner as recommended by kissfoto, and all is well again in God's Country.
many, many thanks once again.
kind regards,
david
