Yes
Yup! On the 20th (US) and 21st (Europe) there shall be a total eclipse. So get your butts out there and lets see those shots! The next one is in 2010!

Heres a link to a guide to help you taking those pictures! http://www.nyip.com/ezine/outdoors/eclipse.html

I think all you need is your tripod, biggest lens that is teleconveter compatible, then borrow a TC of everyone you know and with a little luck..... :)

And some coffee to keep you awake til 3am! I was looking at this the other day and that's what time we're likely to see it (as I understand) - correct me if I'm wrong.

Well if it is that late then i'll have to get up early before I go to work! I've just hired the 1.4 converter from the above website so I hope it works with my 70-300mm IS! I'm rogered if it doesn't! :bang:

Thanks for that info. There's a useful page here that allows you to calculate when the eclipse will be visible.

For Liverpool it appears to be between 0300 and 0351 (if I've understood the table correctly)

Cheers mobile - that'll be the same for Manchester (ish) then !

Saves me doing any maths!!!!! ;)

We'll see... the 70-300 IS isn't on the compatibility chart for the Extender, but you'd think all EF mounts are the same...

awesome...cheers for the info. now all we need is a cloudless night again! :D

I've pulled together a lot of information about how to photograph the moon (eclipsed or otherwise) here.

Shame we keep having freezing fog so wouldnt see anything in Doncaster...Doh

Can I just confirm this ...

The eclipse is 3am on THURSDAY morning?

As in inbetween Weds night and Thursday morning ?

Someone else told me it was Friday morning.

Cheers.

Anth.

Might get up and nip out, but in reality I'll take pleasure from viewing your images as I value my sleep (and my marriage) too much ! ;)

Anth.

Oops -signed off twice!

The mounts are the same. But my 2x converter has a sort of tube thing that extends into the lens. If there's no space within the lens, then its not going to fit.

That's the same link I posted. It starts at 00.37 on 21/2. But you won't see much until the partial eclipse begins at 01.43. Total eclipse begins at 03.01

I ran Stellarium ahead to check where the moon would be at 3am, it looks like the shadow will start to appear about 2am and work it's way across till about 5am with totality around 3:30. Also it seems there might be some chances for shots including Saturn, as you can see from this 3am screenshot, Saturn is just above & left of the moon, in the south west of the sky.

Looks like I won't be bothering to wait up for it...

This is what I managed with a Tamron 28-300 @ 300 when we had an eclipse last March :-

Full Frame .

what would be the best sort of settings for this I wonder...any advice?

Hamish - unashamedly copied from ummm somewhere else:

"Let's assume you don't have a telescope. You'll want something in the range of 300mm or longer to get nice pictures of the lunar disc. 200mm will work but the moon is pretty small. You'll also need a tripod.

Start by taking a few shots of the full moon until you get something that shows good detail and isn't over blown on the bright parts. At ISO 100 this will probably be around 1/250 sec and f/11 or f/8.

Once the penumbra shadow starts moving in you can either leave the settings alone and get comparison shots through the entire event (very cool imho ) or track the ebbing brightness by adjusting the exposure. In penumbra you will need to slow the shutter down to around 1/60sec using ISO 100 and f/8."

Mrgubby - love that shot - something about it that appeals to me!!!!

Still got quite bad cloud cover here in Manchester - but will be checking and probs set the alarm as I'd like to see it.

Cheers.

My shot was 10s / f6.3 / 300mm / Iso 100 .

At 100% crop you can see start trails , if I wake up for tonights I'll be using a faster shutter :)

I'm actually quite gutted because it's clouded over here in Bristol and I was actually thinking that with the live view on the 40D and me now owning a half-decent tripod - I might actually get some decent shots of the full eclipse - something I didn't manage last time :(

Ah well - there's always 2010!:p

Matt

Can't see a moon here in Lanarkshire either :(

Dark, windy, wet and cloudy!!!

booo. its an awesome sight, when the clouds thin a little. damnit!

well clouds got too thick, and i am best part of the way through a bottle of brandy (to warm me up, you understand yeah!)
so here's what i've got with a D40, jessops x2 convertor , nikor 70-300 zoom.

Too much cloud cover here in berks, even though it was moving very quickly. Having a look through what I managed to shoot after I remembered to focus :o

The moon is showing clearly now but isn't doing anything. Couldn't see a thing at 3 o'clock and I drove all the way across the mendips for a better view. Off to bed now, got to get back up in 2 hours.

One of the ones I think I managed to salvage during the totality ^^ Had a go at removing some of the orange streetlight glow from the hazy cloud cover.. as a brucie bonus you get Saturn (left) and the star Regulus from the constalation Leo (right).

alxx, superb shots! - I'm really jealous :) At least now I have 7 years to sort out a 80-200 and 2x tc :)

Cloudy, but heres one from last time:)
