The wifes Passat car has recently had a load of work done to it......costing more than what the car is worth..... today it return home with a shafted back brake..... price to repair £200.......

It is only a run around to get her to her work....would I be better off biting the bullet and buying another run around (sell this one as seen) or should I spend yet more money on a crock of S^*@

When it gets to the point where you're spending more than it's worth the answer is obvious, lose it and buy something better.

Time for a change.

Shafted or worn out? Shoes, pads and even disks and drums are part of the wear and tear to be expected. If the car's otherwise sound, I would keep it - you're unlikely to get much for it as an unroadworthy banger, even if you have spent a few quid on it. It may seem like throwing good money after bad but what's to say that a replacement won't crap out in a couple of months?

If it's truly 'unroadworthy banger'as detailed above then that's even more reason to get rid. Show the wife a bit of respect and don't have her driving about in a death trap!!

so far in the last 3 months we have spent about £500 on it and now with replacement pads and discs (another £200ish) and I have been told the intercooler needs replaced..... Common sense I suppose... time to bin

Cars cost money to run and maintain. Tyres, brakes, servicing etc etc.

Its a mechanical device at the end of the day which will wear. You'll hit a point where a lot of work will need doing but once you're through that you should be good.

Wouldn't say it i

I wouldn't say it is a death trap..... nor would she be allowed in it if it was.....

Do it all yourself, get a 2nd hand intercooler of ebay try euro car parts or brembo brakes for discs and pads. I'd be surprised if it will come to £200 total, you may get years of trouble and cost free motoring after that. As Nod wrote you could get something else and still have bits to replace on that a few months down the line.

Should still run though, just down on boost so lacking power.

Presumably a stone or something has punched through it? Vag do have chocolate hose clips on the inter cooler hoses, make sure it's no that.

Says the man with a Chrysler Voyager..................

Well what the F is it then?

Hang on voyagers are the people carrier things, and not enough people like you to fill it, so it must be summat else.

Got it.........Cruiser, chromed and blinged IIRC.

Oh Yeh!!

While second hand car buying is generally "caveat emptor" in private sales, it is still a criminal offence to sell an unroadworthy vehicle, at least according to the AA. Braking system not functioning properly to the point it will fail an MOT = unroadworthy.

If you're not going to fix it, either sell it with all faults accurately described or weigh it in.

Cars get to a certain age where a few bits fail, but once fixed if the bodywork and engine block/head are sound they are well worth keeping.

I would much rather knock around in an old car that had had stuff replaced than a middle aged car where components are will into their working life.

Then again, for most jobs where time is not critical I do the work myself. Time critical stuff I still use my local garage (eg when I broke a spring recently and needed it sorting the next day while I was at work...)

Mark, does selling as spare/repairs negate the legal side of a vehicle not being roadworthy do you think?

I've got a 2004 passat estate as "daily" car. It's been one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned. Passats 2005 (B6 model) onwards are more prone to problems. I know of quite a few people that have had major problems with injectors and they are not cheap for diesels. They ended up getting them done under warranty after a fight but then VW issued a recall for the engine models affected.

My 2004 (B5.5 model) on the other hand has been brilliant. All I've done is your standard services every year, timing belts and parts like brakes with a lot of wear and tear and It's covered 250,000miles, I've done 230,000 of them. It's still going strong today considering the modifications I've done to it. Hopefully it will keep going as it's great for towing around the MK2 escort:)

Result ! Turns out the pool guy used to be a mechanic...... £100 including parts and a cup of tea.....whoop!

I've spent £10k in the last two years keeping my car on the road. Think yourself lucky!!

Do you not have a Land Roiver though Tom?

Yup! You made that sound like it was normal to pay that much to maintain a landrover...

Oh wait...

Same issue with GF' Mk 4 Golf, last autumn it kept stalling, problem traced back to dirty throttle body - garage said diagnostic machine picked up error codes in ECU and throttle body. repair cost £1700!!
Avised to keep the car running as it was going ok after the clean up. It went fine until I filled up at a local station - then I found a common theme...

Common VW/Audi issues at around 100k miles, I had a few audis that got to this mileage and they all started having the exact same issues. Petrol & diesel models.

Glow plugs
MAF
EGR valve
Boost valve
Vacuum hoses
Battery
Intercooler hoses
Coil packs
CCM module
Bunged up drain plugs
ECT
Water pump vanes
Belts Aux & Timing
Door switches
DMF
Coked up turbo vanes
Stupid window regulators

Just one of those things, all cars have issues, these arent really that costly considering once they are sorted the car will run for another 100k unless the turbo goes first.

Almost all of the above. ...but then again @ 150k on the clock

My last Hilux was great Tom, never broke down and was cheap to run. Changed for a Nissan Patrol, it has not been a cheap upgrade, so it ain`t just Landys mate.

Anyhow, should be sorted now.

Mine happened at around 110 - 115. Shows how common these issues are, I sorted mine so I only paid parts costs.

As its only going to cost £100 to fix Id stick with it, seems youve covered the cost of the main issues already. You wont get much for it at trade or private at that kind of mileage and it just means coughing up a few grand for a new car.

Bloody car has just gone tits up again....Drive shaft and clutch all in one go.....£700 but still cheaper than new car i suppose

Been having brake issues with car today, the break seems very stiff and hisses when you apply it, so looks like it needs to go into the garage. Thing is its under two years old and only done 3500 miles:eek:, didnt expect break issues this quickly, not as if its been abused or theres a reason for this issue, was fine yesterday morning and havnt had any excessive breaking then in the afternoon i nearly went into the car in front when parking on a hill as the brake didnt stop the car,had to yank on the hand break.

Did 150k in my Octavia diesel from new in 8 years.

Only 2 problems were the clutch at 135k and one of the servos or something around 90k. Most reliable car I have ever had. If I had been a gentle driver, I probably wouldn't of had those problems.

Ill also explain why not driving a car gently can avoid some of those issues and perhaps why you wouldve never known if you had these issues assuming the car was new, and under warranty which meant it had to be serviced according to schedule ;)

Glow plugs - If you never changed a set or they never did them at service Id be AMAZED they are a service item, like spark plugs
MAF - 99% of these go, you couldve been lucky
EGR valve - They coke up, spirited driving eliminates this somewhat
Boost valve - Petrol
Vacuum hoses - Sometimes they split, again couldve been lucky or perhaps you never noticed the boost leak
Battery - 150k on a single battery and 8 years in UK weather, again Id be very surprised
Intercooler hoses - Dont always go, but its worth a check
Coil packs - Petrol
CCM module - Audi specific
Bunged up drain plugs - Audi specific AFAIK (but that makes me wonder if its not why your brake servo went as thats how the Audis go)
ECT - These go all the time on VAG
Water pump vanes - Yours wouldve been changed and updated to metal impellar according to service schedule with all the belts
Belts Aux & Timing - as above
Door switches - Common when the CCM goes, Not sure with Skodas
DMF - Yours went
Coked up turbo vanes - Spirited driving eliminates somewhat
Stupid window regulators - Not sure about Skoda

Two hundred pounds for that lot sounds very reasonable ...how much does a photographer charge for a couple of hours? Heehee...

Sounds like your vacuum steering assist (power steering) is sucking air instead of making depression, maybe a hose has come lose or split?

Very dangerous fault, as you found out.
