So I have a 5D Mk2 with Canon 24-105mm as my main setup.

Love the shots I get but lugging it round is getting tiring and I go abroad 7-8 times a year and I really don't enjoy the weight in 30 degree whether.

I wouldn't sell the 5D but I am considering a decent compact cameras.

I have done a little research and the Sony RX100 seems to get positive reviews, its mainly for photos but the video would be handy.

My concern is whether I will be happy enough with the images to justify having it.

I want something that could fit in my pocket so I could have it with me all the time and I could also then leave the 5D at home sometimes.

I would buy second hand and budget is £200-£350 at most really.

Is the Rx100 the best deal about?

Judging by recent threads started, yes. There are other options too such as the Ricoh GR, Fuji X30 (now discontinued and that I have) and one or two others. General consensus is that the Sony has everything apart from a likeable form factor / menu system.
 
I was in the same boat and picked up a RX100 Mk4 and hated it. But it was more the feel, ergonomics of a point and shoot rather than the IQ - which was really superb.
 
another option is micro four thirds. not as small as sony but bigger sensor and with a pancake lens there not that big. its a halfway house option

Both have some great reviews,but as I've only used,and own the TZ70 so can only comment on the one I have!
Panasonic Outlet do the TZ70 for £179.99 with a 12 month warranty,which I believe is cheaper than the Sony......could be a deciding factor in your decision?

Essentially the same camera I believe try googling it and see what comes up,but t would wait until you see the TZ70,when mine arrived it was as new!
 
Personally I can't quite bring myself to have just a compact so I've settled on a Sony A7 and a compact prime as my quality and day out by myself camera and MFT as my more compact and good enough set up. The first time I took my Panasonic G1 out to a location I'd normally have taken my 5D I honestly had to keep checking to see if it was still in the bag such was the saving in weight.

If you're a prime guy you can get really good quality out of a small MFT camera like the RF style GX7+17mm f1.8 or 20mm f1.7 but even with a mini SLR style camera and a zoom there are still significant savings. The Panasonic G7+14-42mm kit lens or even the 12-35mm f2.8 is still a significant saving over an APS-C DSLR and similar lens.

As a truly pocketable option I have a Panasonic LF1. It has a usable EVF and full manual control is possible if rather fiddly, it can be found for under £200.
 
We have had nothing but trouble with Lumix cameras......and they are totally disinterested in any kind of customer support. They have a customer support department and they pay lip service to the legal requirements, but it took us 2 years to get a faulty Lumix replaced (it was 4 months old). We had to go to the Citizens Advice Bureau for help in the end - yes, they were THAT bad. They will never see another penny from our family, regardless of how good their lens might be.

Which model did you have the trouble with?
Speaking from experience I've never had a problem with Panasonic,the Wife recently had a faulty TZ100,only 6wks old,they replaced it no problem,no problems since!

Ditto - i havent had anything photographic of theirs go wrong - but we had a breadmaker replaced with no quibble, and a stereo with a skipping Cd unit replaced even thoughit was slightly out of waranty
 
There is a thread on the RX100 in this forum where you can check out the image quality. I had the Mk1 and now have the IV and am very happy with it.
 
I had the RX100mkI and image quality was alright, nothing to write home about, but alright.

Have just picked up a G7X and absolutely love it! Worlds apart from the Mk1 in all honesty!

Hmmm I hadn't seen the G7x until now, it does look good.

I will have to have a look to see what is about second hand.

Will pop into Jessops to see if I can play with any.

Tha G9X is also worth a look. The big difference being the smaller form factor (weighed up against the focal length/min aperture differences) - it is truly pocketable with a great touchscreen UI and shares the same 1" sensor.
I've got one and I love it(-:
 
Bought an RX100M2 for the same reason recently. Brilliant camera, take it out often when I'd never have taken the DSLR because of its size etc but now often find myself choosing to use the Sony instead of the Nikon. Very impressed.
 
I went for the rx100 mk 1 because I was disappointed with the quality of shots from my smartphone which I was using for snaps
The rx100 is excellent Really good image quality and I have used it for landscape stuff when I didn't want to carry all my gear
 
I have the G7X. Will shortly be off on a family holiday to Eurodisney and that will be all over take with me. I tend to leave that in Jpeg mode too for family trips, whereas I always shoot raw on my 70D.

Like you, I just wanted something light to carry around where I would still get decent quality.

I compared it side by side with the RX100 Mk3 as I fancied the viewfinder with the Sony, but I found it of little use and the Canon just felt better. It also has a longer zoom (100mm).
 
For a really small compact with well-regarded image quality the Sony RX series cannot be beat : they are all far too tiny to interest me.
My pocket cameras are all m4/3rds.
 
I went through the same dilemma recently.

I now have an olympus OMD-EM-10ii with a couple of nice primes and my go-everywhere kit. I'm very happy with it, and it has retro appeal to boot.

I could easily pick up something without a viewfinder if I want to go even smaller.

I've just ordered the G7X Mark ii. Should get it tomorrow hopefully.
 
We recently upgraded my wife's compact from a TZ10 to Olympus E-M10 MkI. The oly is only a little bigger with the pancake zoom, but image quality, especially colours and tonal rendering, holds up much better than the Lumix. Having an eye level finder also helps her get horizons straight compared to just a rear screen.
 
odd jim you have some really good photos there well done I have only just come over to the MFT with a GX7 from nikon due to medical reasons the weight factor aloud me to carry on with photography
