I have version 3.2 which is fine but my free upgrades have expired. Any thoughts on whether the version 3.7 makes it worthwhile payable upgrade? Or should I just wait a year or two for substantial improvements.

They did not force me to buy Photo AI but gave it to me free as I already had DeNoise AI and Sharpen AI though, so far, I have still preferred to use De-Noise AI and Sharpen AI separately. However, at this moment I am downloading an upgrade to Photo AI v1.1 so I will see how it operates tomorrow. I have Denoise AI 3.7 now but could not tell you which improvements were best. I have been happy to invest in Topaz software. I am wondering whether Adobe may get irritated but some of these upstarts producing image processing software. In the past they have sometimes bought out the company and absorbed the technology and staff.

If you own all three then essentially the photo AI just combines that into a single package and is a 'free' upgrade as long as you are still currently paid up. They made it fairly clear in their emails that they are putting all eggs into one basket and that will be the one available going forward.

100%.
PhotoAI is actually close to Denoise and adds a few little gimmicks for portraits that may or may not work. It depends on a case by case basis and I just stick with denoise for now
Sharpen AI is fine once you find the correct setting. Defaults are usually way way off. Photo AI completely, and utterly miserably fails at everything under section Sharpen and absolutely destroys the image. I will see if v1.1 fixed anything.

Interesting conversation here. Looks like a great forum!
I have Denoise AI and to me it's very impressive. I've have the Photoshop plugin and use it only when needed. I do like that it performs a little sharpening as well so that's a bonus. I use it on a smart object so always editable. I've been a Photoshop user since 1992 so there's not much I need from external apps. Usually everything the plugins do, I can do in PS anyway, but I do understand that those who aren't masters of PS will always have a need for addons like Topaz. Just go for whatever floats your boat. Most of these things have free trial periods and that's a good thing to have before spending your hard earned.

A quick update. 1.1 doesn't fix the sharpen issues, and I just happened to test an image (that didn't really need anything doing) and denoise worked much better than photo ai. I was looking at red bedside lamp in a fairly dark room, and photo ai created a very nasty outline around it. denoise was much more subtle, but in this case LR default is by far the best.
Photo AI is now insisting that you try to load a raw file direct from LR via plug in module. I did. It looked severely tragic.
Their stuff is good once it is polished. They are shooting themselves right into the foot with this Photo AI garbage. This is seriously pre-beta quality test software.

Here is a recent topaz announcement on their forum for photo ai. Fixing sharpen module is scheduled in the "After that..." Hopefully before this time next year then. If anyone is happy with their current / latest version of the 3 old apps just stay on it.

We’re actively working on these features:

  • New upscaling model (Enhance Resolution) for finer detail and more natural results. In internal testing, this new model significantly outperforms our existing upscaling models in both Gigapixel and Topaz Photo AI.
  • Improve blur estimation so Autopilot can enable or disable Sharpen more reliably.
  • Further improve subject refinement based on AI Brush feedback
  • For raw images: improve strong raw noise parameter estimation and allow Autopilot to select it.
  • Add Configure Autopilot option to enable or disable Remove Noise at various noise levels, similar to the current Sharpen option.
After that, here’s what’s next:

  • New Remove Noise model for non-raw images that preserves more detail and responds better to slider changes.
  • New Sharpen model for focus and motion blur that creates fewer artifacts.
  • Add cropping and allow optional auto-upscaling to original image dimensions.
  • Improve subject detection model accuracy to reduce how often you need to refine inaccurate subjects
  • Add Apple Photos extension
  • Improve the batch processing workflow
We’re also improving performance, reducing memory, and fixing bugs every release. We aim to release most of these improvements within the next few months, although there’s not a firm timeline. While you’ll likely see this roadmap change based on feedback, in the meantime we hope this shows you the direction we’re taking the product.

If you have a software or account issue, please contact our support team 4 for the fastest response. If you have thoughts on our roadmap or other ways we can make Topaz Photo AI more useful for you, please post below. We might not add every feature, but we do read and consider each post.

Thanks. We’re looking forward to making Topaz Photo AI the perfect tool for you!

Many times I have seen images that look almost as if a pencil (white or black) has been drawn round parts of the image, and other areas have artefacts round the edges.
I guess it may not matter the way some images are used or printed, but to me your words "severely tragic" describe it.

A little sharpening often helps, but as soon as it is visible on edges, or increases noise, it has gone to far (though I won't say I never go too far :) )

I have tried several of the "AI" programmes and not found anything that I consider is worth paying for yet.
They are to my mind still immature..

For someone who needs the ability to rescue an image commercially, I can see they may be an option and worth paying for, but so far they don't add anything to my enjoyment of a hobby.
