Hi Ruth. I quite like the simple take on the theme and the composition with that corrugation angled diagonally. Very nice - well done.

Thanks Carl, the theme came through as I was staring out the window looking at all this corrugated metal - it had to be done!

Yes, Ruth. now that is my kind of shot, love everything about it, makes you look and makes you think. Quality image, good luck completing your 52

Like it. Nice simple, yet effective take. The diagonal works well. I'd like to see a little more contrast.

Nice start.

Cheers.

I like the simple composition a lot, too - and the patterns and textures are really interesting - it's a pity the bg wasn't maybe a bit darker to help it stand out more, but I guess the fence wasn't going to move for you ;)

Thank you all. I agree it is a shame the background is a bit similar in colour but there was really nothing I could do about that :(

As already said its basic & simple.
My kind of image, nice start Ruth

Hi Ruth, great start to the 52 and I'm a sucker for abstracts and diagonals so it's a thumbs up from me. Andy covered my only crit, I'd like more contrast to seperate the background from the metal.

Freedom from Captivity

Freedom from Captivity by -Toothie-

This theme was difficult for me as I really didn't want to take picture of captive animals and then I remembered I am currently staying at what was once possibly the heart of what was the British slave trade. Suddenly my options were overwhelming!

This statue is on a roundabout on the ABC highway in Barbados and has its own Wikipedia page

Written on the statue (and not covered on the Wikipedia page)

Firstly "This statue was erected by the government and people of Barbados to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery and the emancipation of Barbadians from the intuition of slavery" It was erected in 1985.

Secondly "...be it therefore enacted...that from and after the first day of August one thousand eight hundred and thirty four all persons who in conformity with the law now in force in the said collinies respectively shall on or before (August, 1st 1834) have been duly registered as slaves in any such colony and who on (August, 1st 1834) shall be actually within any such colony and who by such register appear to be (Auigust, 1st 1834) of the full age of six years and upwards, shall by force and virtue of this act... Become and be appreciated labours..." The abolition of slavery act 1833

I can only hope these atrocities are never repeated

a powerful image Ruth, i like your framing and the angle too. maybe a B&W conversion might help with the pain and suffering that this statue represents

Lovely contrast between sky and statue really makes it stand out. Nice one Ruth

A very nicely taken image Ruth and narrative to go with
(Although he does appear to have broken his bonds :D )

Oh and I'm no jealous at all, no sireee :D

Many thanks all :)

I thought about B&W but this is Barbados - live life in colour! It was also the break from captivity so no longer about pain and suffering but about people power and freedom :)

An uplifting take on the theme, Ruth. I really like your composition - it might have been nice to have been able to lift the shadows on the chest a little. But not easy if you're away from home!

I can't work out what causes those shadows - it was a little frustrating and I did lessen them a bit from the original image but I know what you mean.

Thanks Chris and if it makes you feel better I have been eaten alive - I lost count at 30 bites and at this point I am hoping I don't get malaria or that other nasty disease you get from mossies :(

Oh b****r :( fresh meat eh? ;) thats why I don't get bitten ... I'm old tough meat :D

:D apparently I'm tasty although I like to know I am contributing to the food chain as well as taking from it ;)
Well there you go then, job done :D

Great composition and colours Ruth - Free at last!

Hi, very fitting image indeed, what a terrible time it must have been

Definitely not B&W, the blue sky helps the statue to really stand out. Pity about the shadow on the chest, you might have to go back and try a tiny bit of fill flash.

I would but it is on a roundabout on the main highway in Barbados - stand to the side on the road and your plagued by street lighting, cars, busses, telephone and power cables and houses, stand on the round about and your at a very odd angle and the statue is high above you any flash would dissipate into the light before it reached the statue and you would need ladders and off camera flash to get it in the right place, which would be impractical due to the risks from cars and other traffic. One near death experience per holiday is my limit!

Sometimes you have to live with what you can get :)

Hi Ruth :)

Captive - A very good take on the theme, and something that should never be forgot for sure !!!

Tough to crit really, nitpicking I'd like the shadow detail increase a bit, other than that, really nice composition and liking the blue sky with some white fluffy clouds, like it :)

Hi Ruth Great picture for the theme, well taken shot.(y)

Many thanks guys I really appreciate all the input - even when it is stuff I can do nothing about :)

I am also hoping to improve my editing skills over the course of this year. All work being done on my iPad using Pixelmator which seems a comprehensive app. Hopefully we will get some themes that require that kind of thing before too long :)
