How do you know when you have too much kit?
I'm always looking at what will be the next lens, camera etc
do others here have this problem that you can turn something you "want" into something you "need" by justifying it?

you should never miss a bargain right?...

That's a very good question. I've been very careful in the choice of all my lenses, but there's no escaping the fact that some get little use compared to others.

When your camera insurance costs more than your car insurance.

When you need more than one bag to carry it all.

When your wife sinks into the mud and doesnt come out again LOL

When you end up leaving most of it at home because it's either too heavy or you can't fit it all in the bag ;)

I personally found I had so much gear I just couldn't travel light and ended up not going out much. Trimmed down to the essentials and I'm away with a smaller bag having hours of fun again :)

I keep a smaller bag just for doing that h4rri. I keep all my kit in hard cases at home plus one lowepro bag and I have a Redsnapper backpack.

Basically I decide what I'm going to be doing and pack either the lowepro or backpack depending on where I'm going. I only ever take so much kit out at a time.

I did spend two weeks with just a nifty fifty and took it everywhere with me. Had a blast doing it too.

I guess that statement would only be valid if you're interest only lies
in one subject area. You wouldn't take super-tele's on an urban or landscape shoot nor would you have wide angles on birding day.

have to agree, i am eyeing up new lenses, but havent got much of the focal range covered. i purchased the 17-85 kit lens which i liked, till i took the kids to a party and couldnt get usable pictures. i have two other lenses (50mm 1.4 and a 50-150 f2.8). i think i have justified the sigma 24-70 f2.8 but just need the funds for it:(.

i do think people do go a bit mad for kit, but most seem to be requesting it for a specific purpose.

I tend to like to carry a small shoulder bag - too be honest, if I find stuff gets left at home much, or doesn't come on trips, it gets sold.

Why not? A tele can be useful for picking out detail in (urban) landscapes and a wide angle can be handy while birding... (LadyLens has a shot of me shooting this!)

If you have space in the bag (and the strength to carry it!), take it, just in case!!!

I have 2 18-55s (ones a new IS) an older 35-135, a Sigma 70-300 apo, a 100-400 monster and a nifty fifty. Am thinking of selling the 35-135 and the 70-300 as there is too much overlap with the others. I want to get a Sigma 10-20 for the wide stuff.
My kit will end up as:
50
10-20
18-55
100-400
Should cover most eventualities with that lot.
Do you lot agree?

IMO, keep the 70-300 - it's more hand holdable than the 100-400 and would probably only fetch around £75 or so.

Also, if there's a chance you'll go up to FF/Fx in the next few years, I would go for the Sigma 12-24 rather than the 10-20. Almost as wide, generally a better quality lens and it covers the full frame very nicely.

Like I said though, that's MY opinion and it's YOUR money!
