Can I be the only person who thinks that the arrest of this idiot is completely over the top? The Twitter comments were unpleasant and stupid but I fail to see how they justify this person being arrested.

What next? A line on Twitter saying ' You were rubbish because you were fat!', then you are arrested by the Old Bill!

I can't believe how outraged I am by this.

The question : am I the only one?
 
I think it's ridiculous, but am not outraged (but can understand that some people will let it get to them)
 
Which of his comments did you see? His timeline was littered with them, some extremely abusive and threatening.

I will put my hands up to say that I only read the sanitised version on various news channels (can't get onto Twitter at work) so if there is far more to it than appears at first glance, then it may be fair enough. It has to be said that it does make very poor reading for the police as portrayed on the news channels.
 
If being an abusive gob***** bell-end is now a criminal offence, there are going to be thousands of arrests on the first day of the footy season.
 
The Internet should not be a hiding place for hate/bullying etc - glad he's been tracked down and isolated and hope it deters others.
 
I'd just like to say how wonderful, good looking and charismatic absolutely everyone is on this forum.

Why is it ridiculous? It is just another form of bullying and he deserves all he gets.

The question is though, should the police become involved? At what point should the they become involved, if at all? Is calling someone a 'fat barsteward' enough, for example?
My first reaction is that this is the first step on a slippery slope.
 
At the risk of being found guilty of inciting hatred against minority groups, he ought to experience something nasty (but doesn't that make me as bad as him?) - moral dilemma!
 
The slope has always been there. There's always been a crime for sending malicious and nasty things via some communication medium. This is how malicious phone callers are prosecuted. Nothing has changed in that sense. Also most ISPs have clauses about not using their service for abusive and threatening behaviour so at a minimum little twerps like him can be cut off.
 
Whilst I think that Police involvement and arrest are over the top, I was watching that unfold on Twitter, and this 'Riley' kid is disgusting, hate filled, nasty little gobs***e who needs making an example of. If this is the way they do it, and it makes a few others think before posting from the comfort of their bedroom, then it's a good thing.

And the link to the video - its genuinely embarrassing. A desperate lack of vocabulary, the half effort kicking the bed/table the camera rests on, unconvincing threats to a particular individual then a bit of casual racism about 30 seconds from the end just goes to prove there should be an IQ limit people have to prove they are over, before being allowed general access to the Internet.

well, at least one think was cleared up, his belt wasn't from primark .... it was from TJ Hughes.

Yes. I agree. The problem here is that, with the kind of actions they are taking towards comments made on public websites like twitter, they are basically saying that the internet is not a place to have an opinion.

Define opinion though. Define when an opinion becomes abusive. It's difficult to draw the line, but the problem is that in this day and age we seem to be making new laws and rules for every little thing, which is how things get out of control. You make one rule, and technically another rule should be made to account for XYZ. And then another because of ABC...and another...and so on. The concern here is that this is yet another step down "that" slope where our freedom and right to speak openly is put in jeopardy.
 
i think people are reading too much into this. and by us all talking about him when he gets home and hits google he will see how "Famous" he has become for being a bell end and lap it up.

Is it abusive to go onto a twitter feed of some famous celeb, and post that you think they are fat and ugly? What about if I did that in a pub?

i expect a comment like that would be taken on the chin. but a threat to drown daley in the pool and threatening to stab someone who defended daley deserves some reprocussions.

did what in a pub? called someone fat and ugly? youd probably get a smack :D or do you mean talking about drowning daley in a pool? id like to think someone would call you an idiot and tell you to shut up. if you did it in front of an officer of the law then i expect youd face a public order offence.

I also agree with this too, its not so much where the line is, as often each case will need to be judged on individual circumstances and 'intent', but I also do object to the number of new 'laws' that come out of these things. As Suz said earlier, there are already existing laws to deal with this kind of activity, so no need for even more of them, but whilst I do agree this guy does need to be made an example of in the hope others will think twice, I also fear that the slippery slope of laws will be slid a little further down. Freedom of speech is, afterall, for opinions you don't like! ;)

Surely it is a waste of police resources for them to be dealing with 17 year old adolescents who appear not to have a life outside of their bedroom? Isn't cutting off their access to Facebook and Twitter sufficient? Personally, I would far rather the police dealt with more important stuff such as online child porn rings than immature j*rks who don't deserve the recognition. And can anyone enlighten me? Do the police have to act if anyone makes a complaint? If so, when will all this stop? It is interesting to note that the only reason that John TERRY was investigated was as a result of a complaint from one, off duty police officer. What is going on?
 
I think the point I am trying to make (probably very badly) is that there has to be some kind of sense of proportion about this. Cut off his access to Twitter and facebook. End of.
 
I don't think it's over the top in any way. People like this need to be watched, one comment here and there is one thing but the threats and abuse this little cretin put out on twitter and on youtube need addressing.

It wasn't that long ago that two youths in america created hate sites towards a fellow student and then turned it towards hatred of authority in general. They went on to murder 13 people in the columbine killings.

Opinions are one thing, hate sites, threats and hate messages need to be taken very seriously

The fact is if Twitter took action a few weeks ago when he was orginally reported for his racist and bullying comments (which are against it's own rules) then the police would not have needed to be called in, but alas the guys at Twitter are more interested in suspending journalist who have upset Twitter's comercial partners by publsihing a public email address for their CEO.

OK he threatened to kill him? I didn't click and read all the links obviously. I just thought he said "you let your dad down Tom". If it is more than that and life threats then that's different for sure.
