Hey guys, awesome forum you have here! :)

Quick question! Im in the market for a new Tokina 12-24 lens for my 20D, but am just wondering which one to get. Apparently the MkII has an independant focusing motor and that is the only different, its £70 more expensive than the MKI and i just dont know if its worth it?

Does anyone have any experience with either of these lenses and do you think the new MkII is worth the extra cash? :)

Bought the Tokina 12-24 DXII last week for my 40D, i chose it for the more flare resistant coatings and slightly better optics, £70 isnt a great deal between getting a lens you are happy with or saving the cash and being disappointed and not using it.

I bought the 12-24 F4 Mk2 a couple of weeks ago from OneStop Digital in Hong Kong for £332 delivered. In addition to the motor, it also has new better coatings. I am sure you could find the Mk2 version less than £70 difference from the UK if you don't want to buy from HK.

I bought the Mk1 because it was on offer online new for £299 which I thought was a great offer. Reading a lot about this online people tended to say it was worth getting a Mk2 if you have a Nikon but for Canon you only get the improved coatings which people cant agree about universally. Personally, i'm on a tight budget and the extra coatings weren't worth £70 to me, also I needed it fast so hong kong was out of the option.

Put mine on my 400D this week and used it for the first time last night, really pleased with the results and comments are always welcome! All were taken using the tokina 12-24 http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=179944

The motor only applies to Nikon cameras and only makes any difference with their entry level line up. All canon compatible lenses have internal motor.

The new coating could be important. Mk1 is a great lens, and performs well in most situations, however some street lights and the moon can cause rather bad ghosting. I haven't tried mk2 so I can't say if it actually resolved ghosting.
