I've got a Nikkor 17-35 now and its very good indeed.

I'm not convinced though that for w-i-d-e DX doesn't actually make more sense now vs the (expensive) 17-35 or 14-24 Nikkor solutions?

I agree - the Nikon 12-24, Sigma 10-20, and Tokina 12-24 are all fantastic lenses.
 
I'm seriously considering getting the Tokina now (for Canon crop). I was set on the Sigma 10-20 as everyone seems to have one but actually the Tokina seems to get amazing reviews.

Plus Microglobe have it for £340... has anyone used them before?

Would love to see some sample pics from the Tokina if anyone has any they'd like to show off?
 
Here's one I took at the portsmouth meet up with the tokina 12-24. Got mine from urgalaxy on e-bay £199 + £47 PP guaranteed no import tax. ;)

About buying tokinas from HK. Does anyone know if the warranty is still valid when not having duty paid? I know they have an international warranty but do Tokina UK need the import invoice to for free repairs?

No its not.

Yes, the importer is Kenro - very nice folks. They replaced my Tokina 12-24 as it had a decentering problem.

Neither Kenro or Tokina.eu will touch imports, VAT paid or not. If it has an Asian warranty (or no warranty) you're stuffed.
