I'm interested in getting a used wide angle lens and was seriously considering the Nikon 12-24 F4 and then I read some good things about the Tokina lenses which seem to be excellent bang for buck. How do these lenses compare to the Nikons in both build and performance? Thanks in advance.

Tokina 12-24mm if you are limited on budget; Nikon if you can afford it. Both are equal there or thereabouts. i have the Nikon but that's only because I got a good used deal (£450). Would have bought the Tokina otherwise.

The 11-16 was of interest though because of the wider aperture and wider 'wide' setting. Apparently a great lens and as close to a fisheye as you'll get without it actually being one.

My Nikon 12-24mm is very well built; focus is fast and smooth, as it the zoom. It's pretty much bombproof as a lens. The front element is big and a protective filter is a must. You do get some CAs at the corners, especially when shooting a high contrast scene, but compared to something like the Sigma 10-20mm it's brilliant (the siggy is rubbish IMO).

You do get the obvious distortion associated with extreme wide-angle lenses (as you can see below; the bloke's head is stretched) but nonetheless, for wide-angle landscapes it's a greta lens and is tack sharp. Think I saw one in the for sale section for under £450.

i have the tokina, seems ok to me but i havnt got anything to compare it to. Got a bargain on it for £240 with a very expensive polarizer thrown in off ebay.

most stuff here (not at 35mm) shot with the tokina. Cracking lens for the money, super sharp and great colours. Couple of examples below:

ohhh, forgot to add but it's also a really nice lens to handle. Much better than any of the Sigma and Tamron lenses I have used. Surprisingly good.

I have the 11-16. It vies for top spot against the 105macro and now the 50mmf1.4.

Found if fun and easy to use. Well built. Some people had soft or damaged ones, but mine has been ok. Occassionally gets exposure settings wrong.

Check the flickr link in my sig, there is a set of tokina shots.

I am really pleased with the results from my Tokina 11-16 :)
