Help me deiced which lens is best for me and my faithful Canon 40d, if any. Im after a lens for Landscapes and Buildings.

Tokina 11-16mm ...... Sigma 10-20mm ........ or?

Recommendations Please.

10-22 L seems to be getting a nice write around here. Can't go wrong with either, I never bought the 11-16 because of its extremely limited range. But if you know for a fact that you are going to do only wide shots that is less of a problem and it is a cracking lens!

Currently own a 10-20 Sigma on Pentax. Bought that over the others cause it is a good lens and costed me new only £298. Haven't used it enough to form an opinion but the few shots from it have come out nice.

Is the Canon EF 20mm F2.8 Lens also worth looking at?

I am not familiar with Canon am afraid but what I can tell for certain is that 20mm is not really all that wide on a crop camera.

i have a tokina 10-17 which is a fish eye.

but if the 11-16 is anything like mine, then you will love it. super sharp and amazing build

You mean the EFS 10-22? It's not an L lens, but optically is up to L standard.

Distortion control, range then aperture listed in preference for this class of lens for me. I bought the Canon 10-22.

Thanks guys, after reading reviews im now after a Canon EF-S EFS 10-22 mm F/3.5-4.5

Or do I really want a Canon EF-S 17-55 mm F/2.8 IS :thinking::bang::bonk::lol:

Those are two entirely different lenses!

Do you have the kit lens? How does that range suit? If not wide enough then obviously 10-22.

To complement the 10-22 I will add the 17-55/24-70 eventually.

Sorry I have seen it quoted as an L lens so often I am all confused. No it is not an L lens but apparently it is very good.

Lol!

17-55 is a very, very good low light walkabout and portrait lens (which I'm still hankering after!) and the 10-22 is a superb wide angle! It depends what you're gonna use it for!

It is, very good indeed!

17 is not really wide either on a crop though.

It's pretty wide on a crop! It's classed as a wide angle rather than an ultra wide (such as the 10mm + lenses).

I've just received a sigma 17-70mm and at 17mm on a 50d i feel even wider would be great! If your mainly shooting landscapes and buildings, go wide! Around 10mm.

It can. But also sometimes needed. Hence why you need something with a useful range :)

I don't find it wide enough this is why I do not have a 16/17/18-something lens. When I need to go wide 16-18 is just not cutting it.

I have a 10-20 now, a 40 prime and a 50-135.

10 can be very wide but this is why I was suggesting to the OP a 10-20/24 as opposed to the Tokina since it has a very limited range.

Indeed...something like 10-22,17-55 and 55-250 is quite nice crop range setup. I just need the 17-55 to complete mine.

I have Tokina 11-16 and it is very good, sharp and can even be used as 16mm prime on a full frame!

I have the Tokina, amazing lens and super build quality, i would keep it if it worked on FX properly. Don't like the sigma coatings (rubbery feel) i think they attract dust (well mine does)

Tokina win

Some rubbish pics but taken wide open at f2.8...taken hand held.

Wide open at ISO200

Wide open at ISO1000

Wide open at ISO1600

You know the d300 isn't full frame right?

Here is an image of mine, Tokina at 14mm iso100 f8 and exposure of 10 seconds

I use tokina on my D300, but it can be used on a full frame at 15mm and 16mm without any vignetting, of course no filters..;)

Yeah I know Jim, but Im I buying the wrong one, SOOOOOO confused.

It seems fairly simple to me, the Tokina is better in low light and slighly sharper where as the Sigma has a better range while the Canon 10-22 has slightly better range, image quality and low light abilties than the Sigma. Bare in mind that all UWA's are good in low light naturally even when stoped down a bit.

The main thing to consider is I'd say how you intend to use it. If your happy swapping between an UWA and a kit lens then the Tokina maybe the best option, if you want something you can leave on the camera more thats slightly wider then the Sigma and Canon are the better option.

The Canon is for whatever reason much cheaper used(£450) than new(£650) at the moment.

I vouch for the tokina 11-16, brilliantly sharp lens even at F2.8 and well built.

cheers,

andy

The only problem with the Tokina is that it really is poor when it comes to flare, especially compared to the Canon...

Well, no going back now!

Just purchased a Sigma 10-20mm f3.5

I used to own a Sigma 10-20mm when I shot Canon. Since I've switched (back) to Nikon, I plan on picking one up again. It really is a fantastic lens.

The Tokina 11-16 is the sharpest of them all.
I know guys who have both lenses the canon 10-22 and Tokina 11-16 and they swear by the Tokina, it's sharper less vigneting than the canon and about £100 cheaper.
Go for the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 or sigma 10-20 f3.5

I own both and I strongly disagree. As far as sharpness goes, they're almost identical and neither suffers from noticable vignetting. But the flare on the Tokina is substantially worse and the CA is noticably worse.

I believe the 10-22 can be corrected in Canon DPP easily, not that I've seen particularly bad CA or vignette.

I bought it for the range, which in my opinion is far more useful than aperture in this lens range, the USM, FTM and closer MFD.

The flare put me off the Tokie, as I will primarily use it for landscapes it had to at least win this round over sharpness.
