Thanks - good news for me if its grey is that Tokina supply a 2 year international warranty! PG also offers a free 5 year warranty on all lenses...

Will have a further look around online and see what I can find ***

Yup, so as long as you don't mind a trip back to the country it was meant to be sold in originally (probably HK) then you'll be fine

Am I getting international warranty confused? I thought with Tokina, it does not matter what country the lens was purchased in?

I don't think Kenro, the official importer will see it that way somehow. That's why PG offer their own guarantees, as few, if any, of the manufacturers' warranties of the products they sell cover grey market goods.....

Exactly right - neither Kenko or Tokina.eu will honour these as they have not imported themselves. And too be honest, why should they?

I've dealt with Kenro and they are very nice chaps (they sent me a brand new Tokina 12-24 when mine was decentered).

Tokina.eu won't deal with anything with an "Asian warranty card" (Robert at Tokina.eu told me that directly) - at the time I was considering an 11-16 f/2.8 so I asked the question.

Thanks. Sorry to bang on about this however what is the advertised "international warranty"? All Tokinas products are advertised with it??

Thanks in advance

Well its basically meaningless really in this instance.

There is no Tokina UK to send the lens to - Tokina are a Japanese company.

Kenro are the importer but they are not Tokina. So its not reasonable to expect them to honour this warranty.

Some Ebay sellers are now a bit more honest about this and put disclaimers like "warranty service in your country may be difficult to obtain"

Will Tokina in Japan honour the warranty if you send it back to them?

Are there problems with getting repairs done for grey imports after the warranty has expired? The british importer may refuse to carry out repairs even if you are willing to pay.

Good question. If I were to buy the lens from say Warehouse Express - what would happen in the event of a failure of the lens?

Been lusting after one of these myself for a while now so i'm in the exact same boat.

Simply Electronics are the cheapest i found online at £430, but obviously it'll be a Grey import.

So i guess the question is, where to buy one from that will back you up incase it all goes pear shaped??

Will keep an eye on this thread Sophos, be interested to know which way you decide to go mate :)

Lee.

That will come in handy if you need to send it back, they keep my Sigma 24-70 for 3 mths to sort out a back focussing issue with it. You could use the manufacturers warranty as PG has there own when I bought my lens so it had to go to them.

Thanks for the replies!

Lee - will keep this thread updated! I'm thinking about buying it from UK, Bristol cameras for £489. With whats been said on this thread, dont want to save £50 but have a pain in the proverbial if it goes wrong...

Will of course ring some of the others first and see what they say re: warranty

so has that tempted you into getting one from PG?

I have only one previous experience with them when a friend ordered a Sony R1 a few years ago. On the site it said "in stock" but it still took 7 working days to turn up. Other than that it was fine, not entirely sure if it was a Grey or not though tbf.

Fortunately (or not) i don't live too far away from them so i may play safe and reserve one then arrange to collect it from the shop. That way i can make sure it's not a Grey before i hand over the money.

Edit: to ask, how comes you haven't plumped for the 12-24 Tokina?

Good question! After the 11-16mm for several reasons...

I'm after a 2.8 to use for urbex, usually indoors and pretty much bad light
1mm on a crop makes a fair bit of difference
Easily adjustable barrel distortion and CA's
I've got a 17-70 f2.8 to (something) Sigma which works pretty good for other focal ranges
Everyone I've read/spoken to bangs on about the 11-16 as being a Nikon killer, there is of course the Nikon 10-24(?) which does well however costs the same as a kidney

Excluded the Sigma 10-20, the only thing going for it was the 10mm end, way too soft in the examples I've seen (I know people that also love this lens) however I want a sure thing, not something that I buy only to sell a few weeks later.

The Tamron ultra wide I looked at, London Camera Exchange rated this as the best - after seeing some shots, I would beg to differ. In all honesty, they were dire still LCE would not back down, they lost my trade

For what it is worth I have recently bought a Tokina 11-16 for my D300 and I am very impressed with it. Hope you get to enjoy yours as much as I am enjoying mine :)

so have you decided against using PG or are you waiting to see what Kenro say re: the warranty?

i'm sorely tempted to buy from PG just out of laziness :suspect:

I'm waiting for Kenro to confirm, I've been told that they will cover any lens that comes with an Worldwide Warranty certificate as all costs are claimed against Tokina Head Office (makes sense to me)

Once confirmed, I've sourced these for approx £400 - only risk (apart from Hong Kong shipping) is import tax at about £30...

Will get back as soon as poss....

I've bought from PG before, it was a Nikon 70-300vr. Delivered in a couple of days and with a normal Nikon warranty card. I registered it ok with Nikon so assume it was a UK sourced lens.

Good man.

I'm highly tempted by one atm as I've wanted one ever since reading its review in Feb's issue of PhotoPlus.

Just off the phone with Kenro and want to set the position straight as there is some misinformation in this thread.

First thing, Kenro were totally helpful - well impressed by their service.

I posed the question that I'm buying from either Hong Kong/Japan and what would happen in the event of a warranty claim in the UK

  • The Tokina Worldwide warranty is exactly that, it does NOT matter about import/export agents
  • Kenro has NO problems taking lenses that have been bought grey or otherwise AS LONG as they have the 2 year worldwide warranty card
  • Kenro have recently seen a couple of cases where warranty was turned down - this was due to the sellers REMOVING the warranty cards and replacing with their own return to vendor cards

They had no problems when I told them I was going to buy import, they are confident of the product and only care of its function and customer service rather than purchase location. They are also aware of UK stocking issues.

As said, very impressed with them! Now looking for sellers that guarantee availability of the certificate... Will update

Much appreciate the info and length your going to, i'm sure it'll be a relief to others looking to buy in the future

Ask your importer if they want to do a deal on 2 lol :D

Excellent - certainly this is a change of policy there... I wonder if Tokina.eu will now do this to?

Interestingly when Kenro replaced the lens I had here.. they told me it was only because it was a UK lens.

That lens was unbelievable price! Not sure on their rationale or history, I can only surmise that all charges to Kenro are passed through accounts to Head Office, that way it does not make sense to turn away business.

Am awaiting reply, want to be sure on potential sting from customs! No problems for the work...

Will let you know

Kenro are really nice folks - while my 12-24 was attempted to being repaired (sent back to Japan), they loaned me another lens for 2 months. They would'nt even take a deposit from me.

Once the Japanese side of things realised they could fix the de-centering issue, Kenro just sent me a brand new lens and collected the "loaner" at the same time:clap:

Almost can't wait to get my wallet out

This morning I've placed the order for a Tokina 11-16 from Japan. Current view is I should be OK when it comes to customs and charges - we will however find out soon enough.

The seller is the only one selling with Tokina warranty, everyone else states their own or none at all, personally I would not touch these.

Current ETA for UK stock is end of July, cant wait that long...

Will update as the order progresses

Happy to say once the lens is here, checked over and import tax looked into :)

I'm negotiating discount rates for multiple units so if that checks out, I could share the savings :)

Wow - the lens arrived today! Ordered Sunday, delivered from Hong Kong on Wednesday, how cool is that. Now having a play :)
