Toggers in the news

Glad someone is doing this. It's important. We won't have them soon. Nice work.

Ironically, the number of "independent" or "private" filling stations in the UK is actually increasing because the big oil companies are selling their filling stations to independent retailers. Esso has already sold all its stations in the northern half of the UK, and is progresing ther sale of the rest. (Link.) Shell is in the process of selling half of its filling stations. (Link.)

So what these people are documenting isn't the demise of independent petrol stations.....

Yes, they're flogging them off, but they won't survive as independents, as they can't compete on price against supermarkets. They'll end up as mini-supermarkets that also happen to sell petrol... for around 5p a litre more than the local Tesco or Sainsbury's... or they'll fold.

What he's documenting is the traditional village/British petrol station. I'm sorry, but they're going.

At least some will and can. Some of the "independents" have dozens or hundreds of outlets. These people have 373, apparently.

But yeah, they might be independent, but they don't look independent.

Who owns it is not really the point if you think about it. We'll see the death of the "Petrol station". It's already been consigned to history as a concept. A place where you buy petrol, or perhaps a map or some sweets. Usually has a garage attached that does repairs... you can get your oil checked or a puncture repaired.

Already a thing of the past... really.

What you're referring to is an annoying place where you just want to pay your £20, but are stood behind someone buying their week's shopping.

Now that really bugs me!!

You want to pay £20, and you want to give your actual money to an actual person? That's so 20th century.

If you put in more than £20, you would't have to queue behind them so often :)

Nice someone is trying to record these old petrol stations but it is 30yrs to late the supermarkets killed thousands of them off years ago.

The photographer acknowledges that somewhere, and regrets starting so late. Still, better that some are recorded than none.:)

Have you looked at the pump? Many stations are pay at the pump with your card there is no need to wait.

only ones 'round here are Tesco and Sainsbury's... both of which are not really convenient unless I know I'm going to actually fill up... which I rarely do in the micra.

I go to Tesco in the Mustang though, as it now needs at least 98RON fuel thanks to a fairly aggressive ignition remap and they do 99 fuel..

it is perhaps because I only deal in coin of the realm! I am not into all this plastic stuff. My grandchildren say it is all to do with my age.
