Yes
I've just been phoning around a few photography shops thinking I would try a few small business before I give my business to Jessops again.

I was a little saddened firstly, by the fact out of the first 3 numbers I dialed 1 number was not in service, 1 was no longer receiving incoming calls, and the third had a message about being closed permanently, due to it no longer being feasible to run a camera shop with large chains taking good business :shake:

But the fourth shop I called ...

Me "Could you tell me what sort of wide angle lenses you have in store, and some idea on prices?"

Man in store "Which camera is it for?"

Me "A 40D".

Man in store "I'm sorry we don't have any wide angle lenses available for the Nikon 40D"

Haha... did you hang up and burst out laughing after that?

I just think Jessops overall is a bit of a joke. They are meant to the camera shop but the people that work in all of their shops don't seem to know jack about cameras or photography. I like to test what they know sometimes  :)

Hey Jo, you're posting on the internet. One of the things the internet is good for is camera shopping ;)

Really? I never thought of that yourapocalypse :suspect:

Jo

I know what you mean. There are fewer and fewer camera shops around, that really know there stuff.

However if you don't mind dealing mail order then try London Camera Exchange. Their Southampton shop is a Canon Specialist outlet. I've used them a couple of times, and have had good service. Might be worthwhile checking prices on the net though first.

The majority of my dealings have been with on line companies. Warehouse Express and Speed Graphic I've found have always been helpful and informative, especially the latter.

Well I was trying to lay my hands on a new lens for the weekend, and at present don't have the means to shop online. Plus I am too impatient to wait for it to come via whatever postal service

But thank you, and I will bare those places in mind for future purchases :)

Jo, pop over to Cleethorpes. Its only an hour or so away. Try Comley Camera's, 01472 692082. I use them all the time and they are great lads. Great service and they will try to be competitve. I'm getting my Nikon 200-400mm from them.

Both good suggestion and thank you, but the saving I would make on the lens wouldn't even cover the petrol to get there, so it wouldn't really save us anything. No worries, I have me a Sigma 10-20mm waiting for collection at Jessops tomorrow :D I have some vouchers left over from Christmas too, so by the time I have added them it will be a fair bit cheaper anyway.

btw, why does everytime someone type jessops it is in a link?

Should have asked for a telephoto instead and a bus pass

I must say I've had excellent service from the Chester branch of Jessops, they're knowledgeable & very helpful with good after sales service, top marks from me. :)

Had great service from Yeovil Jessops, they don't know everything about everything and lets face it thats what people expect! But they are very friendly and useful to have somewhere to bang on the counter when it all goes wrong.

The Canon 1D3 is only a couple of hundred dearer from them than online and I have somewhere I can go back to if I need to. Sometimes thats worth the extra £ or two.
