Yes
ok here goes.

A little background, been complaining about the weather and how i cant get out to take anything, got told in no uncertain terms by the family " shut up and just take pictures" which is strange for me as i normally need a plan, not the 'off the cuff' type person.

After a rather normal sleepless night i decided (all decisions at 3am are good :) )

Today is Nikon/Macro/water droplet day, so i have a few questions and also any advice would be great.

GEAR: D5100, sigma 70-200 2.8 non OS, nikon 18-200 3.5-5?, nikon 35 1.8g, tamron 17-50 2.8, sb600 flash (no cables or triggers or anything, just basic flash) and some basic CPL filters and a few other random's. No tripod.

1. Gear wise which is best to start with ?

2. main problem, Need to get the flash off cam, so any advice for something i can buy today (was going to get some wireless triggers, but cant buy them anywhere near me) only have currys and maplin that sells photography stuff ) or maybe ideas how i could do this, cable, timer, something all ready in the camera/flash ? (haven't really used flash at all)

Am i just expecting to much to be able to do this is a fairly dark house with the equipment i have ?

3. Any other idea's for the task today, which is "spend time with the Nikon day"

Thanks all,

(feel free to advice on stuff i might need, feel like buying something today, so feel free.)

Don't buy, just go out and shoot something.
Buying is just putting off doing.

:agree::agree::agree::agree::agree:

I see you're in Somerset of all places, personally if I was down in that part of the country I'd be out doing street / flood / reportage type photography

@kendo1 understand what your saying, but as 90% of the time it's raining when I finally get a day off, decided I need to learn something indoors that I can do anytime, esp at night when everyone is sleeping.

@Donnie iim still quite new so feel a bit awkward out in public, as for floods and stuff, seen enough water to last me 5 years, got no interest in taking pictures of it, I do understand what you mean, just not my thing really.

Trying to give myself a set-up/something to do on nasty days/nights

Just read that back, cane across the wrong way, I really appreciate the advice, so thank you.

But just sick of the hole water thing, floods, roads closed, taking 45mins to do a 10 minute drive.

If it came across as harsh, it wasn't suppose to

Cheers

It didn't come across harsh :)

Take your camera with you when you go out to buy something!
The weather is meant to improve in your area this afternoon.
If you're struggling for something to take have a look at postboxes. See if there are any with VR or GR on them instead of the usual EIIR...
Look for submerged signs, fences.
Water means reflections. Try getting down to within a couple of inches of the water (shouldn't be hard!).
Go out with a smile on your face :)

Thanks.

True to Form, spent so long trying to think of something/somewhere I have ended up going nowhere and shooting nothing.

Inspiration is at an all time low, I wish I was the type who could just go wondering and find things, but my nature means I have to have a destination before I can go.

Oh well maybe next sunday

You have some good equipment, nothing stopping you buying a ttl cable from ebay so you can trigger the flash. You could also trigger it with your pop up flash if you set the speedlight to act as a slave. You would have to direct it from the background though and towards the speedlight with a piece of card.

Can i just check, my sb600 will act as a slave and fire from the light of my pop up, no wires or special triggers ??

have i got this correct.

(might have to get the wife to read the manual, as men cant do that )

I dont know that flash at all but if it will act like a slave from your on board flash this will be useless for smoke photography anyway. for smoke photography you NEED it to be off camera only, you wont get any decent results with the on board flash im afraid.

that trigger set at less than 9 quid is the same as a set i have and believe me you'll be hooked on off camera flash once you get used to it, opens up a whole creative thought process you'll love.
