How often do we see here in the classifieds or also on other sites where pre-loved items can be offered for trade / swap / sale.... something along the lines of....

"Erm... the marks in the photo's are just dust, nothing to worry about..."

Lynton's top tip of the day... Dust / polish it first! It really is that bloody easy! Show's a bit of care and thought, and probably more likely to realise a higher price.

some serious muppetry around! And breathe!

I've often thought this myself Lynton.

The other one that I find odd is when a camera is for sale and it is pictured with no cap on the body so is open to dust and all kinds of carp getting into it. It's hard enough at the best of times keeping a sensor dust free.

Chris :)

Glad it's not just me then!

The one I detest is the "Like new, absoloutely mint!" - when it's 2 years old. I don't care how careful you are, even if you barely used it, it's not mint if it's 2 years old. Just ... stop the lies!

or where they say "like new , only minor wear" - so its not like new then is it ?

and "photos on request" - just put them on the thread you lazy ****er

Well I have a tripod head for sale at the moment. It's two years old and been used maybe twice. It is "like new" and "absolutely mint"

No reason why something a couple of years old can't be mint.

apart from it being 2 years old

if its 2 years old it isn't 'like new' - its had 2 years of either being used, or sitting around unused collecting dirt and crap into its moving parts, with lubricant drying up etc.

its fair to say its still in very good condition if it is, but nothing that's 2 years old is going to be still pristine even if its still in its wrapper

Precisely, it's 2 years old, has been used, and I bet if I examined it I'd find the odd scratch, just from normal moving about and the times you did use it. It's unavoidable, unless it was actually kept in it's original packing and never used.

Posted same time there - same idea ;)

It's not in very good condition. It's mint. As for laying around collecting dirt in the workings, what a load or carp. I don't live in the desert.

So I'll describe it as mint because that's what I feel it is. After all, you don't have to buy it ;)

Eh, too right we don't. This wasn't aimed at you, you're a little over defensive there ...

How does that effect the quality of the goods. Does Magnesium alloy degrade over time?

With something like this, it doesn't affect it in any way! It's the "I cannot be arsed to clean it before I try to flog it!, and now you won't offer top £" I have an issue with!

I think you'll find that the original comment wasn't aimed directly at you - however the point still remains , unless its been in a hermetically protected clean room for its entire life it will have attracted dust and stuff - its natural.

I think Cageys original point though was more about cameras - if its been out a couple of times a year and has a couple of thousand actuations , then it isn't 'as new' whatever the owner may feel

yes they have a prefect right to describe it however they like, just as we have a perfect right to laugh, shake our heads and move on to an item which is more accurately described

So how do I describe by sigma 150-500 it's now got a smashed focus screen, deep gouges to the body and a couple of blood stains, sorry don't know if its my blood or not ;)

Of you follow the example of some eBayers I've seen..... Mint!

one careful owner but now in need of TLC , ideal project material

or use a stock photo on the ad, say its completely mint, then send it rmsd and claim the damage occurred in transit , before claiming on the royal mail insurance

Pretty much

Christ, have you all been wiping your arses with loo roll infused with grumpy powder?

Eeeaasy fella.........*Backs away from the Moose.....never breaking eye contact*

The term "Mint condition" is used to describe the condition of pre-owned goods. So if someone describes there item as it, you really can't get that annoyed. That being said, there is a guide line to the condition of which mint is . Which is free from any defects and with any original packaging, and never has left said packaging.

My dad collects and sells old coins, he's managed to get a few bargains by people not labelling their goods correctly.

I agree with you 100% on this point Lynton. This is a major bug bear for me when I was buying a used car. People want thousands but can't be arsed to wash or vacuum it.

You realise, of course, that a "new" item sold in a shop may have sat in a non-hermetically sealed stock room for months or years attracting dust and stuff, just like one that has been bought new and kept in the original packaging for two years. The physical condition of both will be identical, so "like new" would be appropriate.

My main gripe is unrealistic pricing, without going into to much detail, there was a camera i was interested in a few weeks ago in the classifieds, and the seller wanted over £100, the same camera was £69 on MPB?

I realise we all would like to make as much as we can from a sale but come on!

were they absolutely the same though ... mpb pricing tends to vary depending on condition, actuations etc

and also did the MPB price include packaging/despatch and shipping ?

and thirdly the MPB price tends to be the price you pay , wheras classifieds are open to offers and negotiation

Yep exactly the same.

I've noticed this happening as well, some people seem to think because they paid £500 for their 350D (only an example, not pointing out a specific sale) x years ago there is no way it's only worth £50 now and can get quite upset when a person points out the MPB or other second hand prices.

Well there is that... ive seen it happen the other way as well though - the nifty mk1 is a classic case

they tend to go for about 100 quid but hardly a thread goes by without someone pointing out that you can get a mk2 for 50 and "they are newer" (which indeed they are - they are also much more cheaply built)

You call that grumpy? Wow. Must be all milk and cookies for you daily.

You know what another pet hate of mine is? People trying to change your mind about YOUR pet hates or trying to put reasoning to it. The reason it's YOUR pet hate is because it's how you feel about it personally. What is it with people on here that they even have to argue against that? :D

Oh wow, you've all changed my mind, it's not a pet hate at all anymore, you've made me see the light, I think everything in classified should now be labelled "mint" just for the craic like ...
