Today is probably the most important part of my new life!! I live in Spain and am going to my very first ever Spanish lesson :)

A little apprehensive and excited. Not sure what to expect really............. Have got a little book and pen ready!! Feels like a first day at school all over again! :D

Personally, I found Spanish easier to grasp than French. We had French lessons when I was at school but could never master it somehow, but I did learn some Spanish when I was a youngster. I'm certainly not fluent - far from it, but I seemed to scrape by (just about) when I've visited northern Spain in the past. Unfortunately this is one part of Spain where hardly any English is spoken, so you have to do your best.

I wish you well with your lessons. Good luck.

YOU UNDERSTANDEE INGLEESH???

Good luck lady the more you try to speak it the more you will learn. It's certainly improved my life here by learning. But, I do live in a very rural little village :)

Well, I have returned ................... and lived to tell the tale! Today was registration, they spoke to us in very quick spanish for 30 mins. I think I have to go back on Monday and start in earnest!! After that ................... I think they mentioned to bring a dictionary and that on Moday it would be much slower. Oh I do hope so.

They didn't speak a word of english!!

Good luck, and you are lucky to live in Spain. It is easier to pick up the language if you hear it everyday, like in the market or on the street etc. :)

uno cerbeza por favor

Is that not the only Spanish you need? :D

Good luck, I adore Spain, my Father in Law is Spanish and one day I would love to retire there!

Hope it all goes well for you :)

i bet your father in law wishes he had a son in law that stumps up to a whole round and not just one drink :)

Surely "MORE BEERS!" is almost as effective?

Que Pasa?

How is everyone doing, this evening...?

Good on you, Swag for bothering to learn the native lingo. It always amazes me how many people can't or won't take the time to show some respect to the locals and at least try to converse. I know a couple who have lived in Spain for 20 + years (in an ex-pat community) and just aren't interested in learning (their excuse is that everyone they deal with speaks English, so why bother?)

I know what you mean Nod. I had a friend who lived on the Costa Del Sol and had worked there as an estate agent for 30 years. He was proud that he never spoke spanish and wasn't about to start. There are enough times in UK when I thought that people should speak english if they come and live in the country, it's only right that I do the same.

we've got friends who live in Sanet Y Negrals and they're pretty fluent now. We try to get out at least once a year and have picked up a tiny, tiny bit of the language.

In the area I go to a new supermarket opened a few years ago and none of the staff spoke any English so it was a good place to practice my Spanish. Now all the staff are bi-lingual and want to practice their English. This means that all the ex-pats there never need to learn the language of the country they now live in - but you still hear them grumbling about immigrants to the UK not being able to speak English, talk about double standards !

I had my second lesson on Monday, and again this afternoon. I will be going twice a week for 4 hours in total. Monday was difficult, in that they really do not speak any english. So we were learning stuff and trying to learn about pronunication while being told it all in Spanish. What I have picked up so far, is how much I actually do know already.

There's only one sentence you need to know to get by in Spain...at least on my visits anyway!

Una grande cerveza pour fa vour? (spelling probably all wrong)
