Driving along, I saw a Robin in the road, it was next to a fluffy roadkill, I guess it was its mate, it also got runover by oncoming traffic, so somewhere is a nest of young, that will also perish, I cried my heart out.

I dropped in to my Mum's and on the roof next door was a Sparrow, next to it was a little Sparrow, wings flapping, with no lift, not yet - maiden voyage, what an amazing sight, no camera with me but I will remember that first flight forever, tinged with sadness for the Robins :(

Thanks for sharing - I feel your pain... :(

Nature is so cruel and magnificent at the same time...

Let's play nicely everyone.

dseered, as has been said nature can be cruel and it's just a shame that both were killed but at least you also saw the good side.

Jesus, there was no need for that outburst :shake:

dseered, that must have been pretty awful to see, I am very much the same, I can cry for hours on end knowing something like that has happened :(

Have a Betty *hug*

Dragging this thread back on topic ....

I know how you feel dseered.

I ran over a rabbit the other week and it almost made me weep. I did go back to see if there was anything I could do but it was gone.

I remember as children my brother and I found an injured bird huddled against a kerb, it was tiny, not sure what species but we called our mother and she picked it up and wrapped it in tissue and we took it in the house. For a day or two it stayed in the bath where we washed it and gave it food and two days later released it back into the wild where it flew off amazingly. Not sure why it didn't fly around the house, but there you go.

This kind of stuff happens all the time, it's obviously a bit hard to take if you see something like that but there isn't much you can do about it.

Ok, I give up - where's that popcorn...

OK, either I just dreamed the last half an hour or there's a ghost in the shell.......

That must have been a sad sight to see dseered :(

My tribute to the poor Robins - may they fly on.

They may be alright, you know. We have lots of baby birds in our garden, and they have all just started feeding themselves. Robin Jrs may well be OK, so don't worry!

:shake: How awful.

I was just sat at my window watching a wood pigeon with something stuck in its bill. It's clearly suffering. I sent Chris out to see if he could catch it, but it's flown off ... I hope it will be OK, but I don't think this will be the case :shake: Nature can be very cruel sometimes.

I saw something similar a couple years back.

I was walking to uni and heard a thud and a mondeo had knocked a blackbird out of the air in a cloud of feathers, the poor little thing just rolled along the road as stiff as a board. It was flying with its partner and I spotted her every time I walked past that part of the road for the next few days trying to find her soul mate. :(

On a cheerier note, we have some blackbirds that we feed and they are rather partial to grapes and are always sitting on the front doorstep, looking for handouts.

So I'm sitting in the back room the other day when I hear a sound outside and wait for someone to come in. But no one comes - a quick look and I spy the male blackbird walking up the hall way, cool as you like, straight into the kitchen, where he proceeds to have a good rake about all the nooks and crannies.

I'm convinced he was searching for the cache of grapes, but they're well hidden

Every morning when I go to work in the early hours I play dodge the bunny along the lanes, loads of saby ones about at the moment who don't have a clue, then you get the odd deer appearing out of nowhere too.
There is absolutely no way I could purposely run over a living thing, call me hard hearted if you like, but there is also no way I could leave an injured animal in agony on the road so I do tend to aim for them to finish them off if they look really bad.
I feel sad every time I see something lying on the side of the road, round here it seems to be more badgers then anything, such a shame.

I found an injured raven whilst hiking yesterday. I picked it up and it appeared to have a broken wing.
Since i was in the middle of nowhere, and every time i tried to carry it it tried to fly away i didn't want to do any more damage. I had to leave it in the grass.

We've got a poor pidgeon in our garden who cant stand on one of his legs. Keeps laying down in the grass. Battered feathers where all the other birds keep attacking it. Nature is wonderful but cruel.
