Hey folks, my OH has a Nikon D3000 and is upping his game slightly by looking at new lenses and flash. In the meantime I have started to dabble with photography using his camera. I've now decided I'd like to start properly with photography and we can't decide if I should get my own camera (similar price range to his) or whether we should wait for anything up to a year and go halves on a better model. It would mean we have to share in the meantime, thats fine for portraits etc but it's a bit rubbish if we gout on a picture hunt at the weekend as one of us will always been standing about.

So what do you guys think? Share for now and get a better camera later or get my own now?

Source out a cheep Older Model-D40/50? Around 160 quid, then save for a better one :)

I might suggest getting a good point&shoot as a second camera - it can be very complimentary to a DSLR (compact size, speed of use, more often to hand) and you can learn a lot of the techniques such as varying aperture and shutter speed with one. Plus they do surprising macros...

Thanks v much!

I've seen a D60 at £209, ideally I want to stick with Nikon so we can share lenses and flash etc. Other than MPB where else should I be looking?

If he 'really' loves you, he'll buy you a D300s...

Love it!

More chance of hell freezing over though, I've got more readies than him and I can't justify £350 just now (we're getting married in August)

My wife and I have our own camera bodies, we share lenses and other stuff.

I can't imagine having just a single body between us - too much "it's my turn now!" A day out without a camera each is not going to end happily!

I would say keep an eye on the classifieds here but they have just changed the rules and to even see the classifieds you need 100 posts.

In your case and given that you really have a DSLR - even if it belongs to your bf - I'd go for a high and P&S . I've just seen a display model LX3 for 185 at John Lewis so they can be had for cheap, great little camera for you to learn with.

If you insist on a DSLR get a D40 and save up for something better later on though for most people a D40 is plenty of a camera.

I've just had the exact same "discussion" with my fiancee (getting married in a couple of weeks). "We" decided in the end that I'd get my own camera body, and we'd share lenses - the principle of sharing is a lovely one, but if you say "can I have the camera please, I've just seen an awesome shot", will you get the camera before the other half takes the photo?

This decision was taken with our honeymoon in mind - we decided we didn't want to test our marriage quite so much at such an early stage! As others have said, get a decent 2nd hand one if you can't justify new - a lasting relationship is worth it!

Well let me know where you found a D300s for 350 and I'd buy one for you and one for me :p

Can the big wedding, get married in Gretna Green and blow all the money you'll save on some top gear?! :bonk:

OK, maybe not. :cuckoo:

Sorry I haven't, been looking at D3000 and the D3100 but I don't think there is much point in us having 2 the same, I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for older one, long as the lenses are compatible.

I'll just need to get my post count up so I can browse the classifieds here

Firstly. Congrats on the forthcoming wedding.

My advice would be to avoid sharing. If you both go out somewhere to take pics you're going to drive each other mad constantly swapping. Been there, done that. £350 isn't far off used d90 prices or maybe a d200. You may even pick up a new d3100 body only. Sharing lenses is a lot easier than sharing a camera.

Hi,
