to shade or not to shade?

When shooting models in a studio under studio lighting conditions

do you use the hood on your lens? is there a need?

I suppose it would depend on the position of the lights, in the right circumstances then it could cause lens flare.

I always use a lens-hood, irrespective of the situation or set-up.

Why not use it? It can do an immense amount of good and can never do harm.

And whenever backlighting is used, it's absolutely essential.

Unless you deliberately want to get a lot of flare in a backlit shot, then there's absolutely no reason to not use it.

I often deliberately try to create flare, and sometimes taking the hood off just gives me the bit extra I'm after, without having to reposition either myself or the lights.
