Im off to the Belgium Grandprix and i recently got a 18mm-250mm tamron lens on my D80, i tried it out at Cadwell park and although it got kinda close i didnt feel it would be close enough for Grandprix action. My question is should i hire a lens for the weekend?

just came across this site for now!
Which lens would you go for? if i should go for one at all?

thanks

Bazippy, I rented from them before and the servise is brilliant - many other members will say the same.

Something like a Nikon 80-400mm VR would be a great lens for getting close in. Plus, you get the benefits of the V system, which would come in handy for bad light or if you get stuck in one of the woodland sections at Spa. At that price it's an absolute bargain and gives you good zoom range.

Yeh i was looking at the 80-400mm VR ill probably give it a go,niec range too so i dont have to change lens so often! Cheers for the help!

Have you been to Spa before? There are some places out in the country where you can get very, very close to the track indeed if you don't mind a bit of a hike.

nope never been, we have all day saturday and Sunday so im hoping we will get round everywhere, ill keep a eye out for the close bits and of course rouge or whatever its called!

Eau Rouge, you can't miss it. I looks like the track goes vertically up the side of a hill, it's nuts. There is a set on my Flickr from the 1000km sportscar race there last year, might give you a bit of an idea about where you can shoot from and what to expect, even with a crap lens like I had last year. I'll be there in 3 weeks for this years 1000km race, I can't wait :)

hire a nice big long lens and a tripod and spy on the guys in the pit :) they all look like stig, i don't understand why the pit crew has to wear helmet all the time constantly.

but seriously, good event and hope to god that the weather is clear, and if you are in a nice location you can get some amazing shots with good lenses and also plenty practise with the lens too :)

Yeh whether i get good shots or not i dont care! its F1 in Spa! but shot would be nice too!

hire hire hire hire hire!!!!!!! :D:D:D best thing i ever did, got some great shots... even if it did leave me with severe lens envy :( :p when you see the results you wont regret it :)

There are a few holes in the fence in Eau Rouge but you would have to get there really early to get a chance of poking your camera through those. Otherwise as others have said take comfy walking shoes, wet weather gear, pack lunch and water and be prepared for a hike through the forest.
