Got some cash coming and will be able to afford to go ff with the Sony A900/850 but is this gonna be what I want?I shoot mainly portraits(well of the kids) and think this is an area I might persue a lot more this year.I have the A700 which is a brilliant camera which I have grown to love and appreciate. The lens line up I have at the moment is Sigma 85mm 1.4(which is permantly glued to the camera),Minolta 70-210(Beercan) and the Sony 35mm 1.8 DT lens which I will probably get rid of if I do end up going ff.Trying to convince myself that I don't need ff but then I see many people saying that ff is better for certain stuff and the think why not?I have the cash to afford it and then sell on my A700...Confused.

Cheers in advance for any input guys and gals.

I'm considering FF too and will move to FF later this year simply i shoot quite alot of low light places that flash is not allow. FF will give me a cleaner images when i bump up my ISO.

I use D7000 atm and the ISO performance is already very good but again the bigger sensor will give you that edge.

Hi Dean, I went FF at the end of last year. I picked up a cheap D700 to go with my crop D300. I can see the difference in IQ between the 2. Is it worth it? I am lucky to have been able to afford to keep both, so I have the longer reach with my lenses on the crop camera, but the IQ with the FF. I had to buy a new UWA for the full frame (Such a shame buying a new lens-He he he) Do I regret it-not yet, I don't make money from my photography, so it was hard to justify the cost of a £1000+ for a body, but if I hadn't tried, I would always wonder if it would have been worth it. If you can afford it, go for it, if you decide it's not for you, you can always sell later on.

If you are asking that question its too late... you will want to go FF no matter what anybody says!

So I'm doomed to get one no matter what.

I have seen an ex-display Sony a850 with a Sony 50mm 1.4 for £1,299...very tempted I must say.:bang:

Coming from an a700, you'll love the a850/900. More or less the same layout, but with a much better sensor (IMO).

Sony a dead end?

Read the rumour sites and look at the continuing new models and you might just change your mind. Sony and one or two others are very possibly more the future of photography than canon and Nikon IMVHO.

I also went full frame from an a700 to an a900,and feel I've made the right choice considering my particular genre is landscape work.i was lucky in that all of my lens apart from one are FF compatible, and that one I sold and replaced with the FF equivalent.

Give it a try,you won't regret it ;-)

If you can afford it go full frame. My only question would be why go full frame with Sony? It seems a bit of a dead end.

I have only just bought the Sigma 85mm for the Sony A700 plus I started out on the A200 so makes sence to advance to the A850/900 from the A700 as I know the Sony layouts and controls now.How come you think the Sony ff is a dead end especially with the new A99 ff in the pipeline.

Well finally done it!!Just bought the Sony A850 from ebay....very excited now.

post some pics as i too was looking at upgrading to FF.Ive a Nikon D90 so was looking at a D700 but now the D800 is coming out..Sony doo look good

You won't be disappointed Dean, and it's a perfect upgrade from the A700. Controls are all very similar, but from the first time you hold that viewfinder up to your eye you'll never see your A700 in the same light.

Looking forward to hearing your verdict on it - postman can't come soon enough can he!

I went FF in november last year and it's awesome. I had a Canon 550D and 7D so I gave the 550D to the wife and kept the 7D as backup, but I rarely use the 7D at the moment as I just prefer the FF look.

Upgraded from a Canon 40D to Canon 5D mk2 with 24x105L lens last October. It was one of the best decisions I've made. Quality is remembered long after the original price is forgotten.

Cheers guys for confirming that I have made the right choice..just ordered this book aswell.

Learn the ins and outs of the camera.

Whats wrong with reading the user manual (assuming that you get one with the purchase)? :/ I never really understood why people buy these books for high end cameras. Can understand if it is your first DSLR, but full frame? :?

Because the book is going to give me more info and hints and tips that the user manual will miss out.Had one for my A700 and the book really helped out a lot on a lot of info that was badly translated in the user manual.Surely it can't help to learn as much about the camera as possible?

ive been using fuji s5 pro's for 5 years now.i love the results i get from them.ive waited for fuji to release an upgrade, hopefully fullframe and they havent so its time to upgrade to a Nikon D700 unless Nikon release a budget full frame thats affordable,i will sell one of my S5 pro's and upgrade to full frame so i can get the best out of some of my manual Nikon Ais lenses which are way cheaper than the equivelent new Nikon lenses that are made for full frame

 Just ordered similar for My New to me D3 on the way today - I hope:naughty:

Even though I know what I am doing:thinking: I do read the instructions, I still like the different style some of these books are written in - The Thom Hogan ones for the Nikon range are good - A tog writing for Togs - IYSWIM

Plus is better reading than the news paper - at least its more constructive  and a whole lot less miserable:thumbs:

Hmm fair enough, but you would learn how to use the features by using the camera

Sony a dead end?

Sony is going with EVF (very bad choice IMHO) and semi transparent mirrors. A99, as it is rumored, will come out one day having lost the optical viewfinder and half-a stop of light. Since they are manufacturing FF sensors for nikon it is highly unlikely the will stop FF. They are likely to share a modified D800 sensor.

Sony need to ditch the mirror altogether. If they did a NEX style mirrorless with sensor shift and A77 body with a FF sensor then they'd be onto something.

I don't want an SLT yet as they don't like sigma lenses and that light loss is too significant. EVF is an advantage in some situations and I haven't had a problem with one.

I guess if you have to ask the question, you already know the answer! Seriously, there are two main advantages to FF as I see it. Firstly, the larger viewfinder which helps with composition and manual focussing. Secondly, and perhaps more relevantly, are the lens options. Suddenly huge swathes of older lenses are usable in their native format. And 50mm lenses start to make some sort of sense. I gather one can use old Minolta lenses on the Sonys?

I've never used a Sony although they look like great cameras. 24mp FF? Yes please! The most rewarding thing the D700 has done for me is allow the use of Nikon AI primes at their native focal length equivalent. Something like the 24mm 2.8 is a lovely lens, and it's great to set out for a day just with that and say the 180mm 2.8. Perfectly different and superbly complementary lenses. On DX they're just not as useful, and Nikon doesn't have many DX primes - and no wide DX primes at all. It's a big gap, IMHO, they need a 16mm and 24mm to go with the 35mm.

Basically, if you're a fan of decent old-school lenses, particularly wide, normal or short tele, just do it. If you're a long tele or zoom shooter, there's not much point. And even though I love the D700's images, I couldn't swear I could tell the difference between it and the D90's output at normal light levels. DX is great, and much cheaper. Shame about the lenses. Full frame is a philosophy, or a look - rather than a quest for image quality in it's own right.

I don't believe that Sony will leave the FF market. As for OVF v EVF's. I think that as time moves on this will be one of those arguments that becomes pretty much impossible to sustain. I think that one day only flat Earthers will claim that whatever EVF is current could be bettered by an OVF, but only time will tell.

One day, maybe - that means NOT today or tomorrow.

They are getting better, but dynamic range, resolution and speed just aren't there yet.

Lived with the A850 for 2 years now and its awesome. There is always an argument about noise but not experienced it. Main lens is the Sony 70/200 and its a dream combination. But I have the 28-75 and its great.
